Wales and Herefordshire : miscellaneous county administration papers

Papers deriving from county administration in Breconshire, 1607, 1799, Herefordshire, 1641, Pembrokeshire, 1760, and miscellaneous counties in Wales, 1607-1638, 1859, in which official posts were held by members of the Lewis, Loveden, Pryse and Pughe families. Items of interest include a freeholders’ book for Breconshire, 1799, and a certificate describing the effects of a house fire at Kilpeck, Herefordshire, 1641.

Trust documents of the Caethle estate

Deeds, 1505-1712, relating to the Caethle estate in the parish of Tywyn, Merioneth, owned by the Vaughan family, for whom William Pughe of Mathafarn was a trustee in 1677. The names of John Lloyd of Maesypandy and the Nanney family recur frequently [probably as earlier trustees to William Vaughan]. The Gogerddan family also appears to have had an early interest, as shown by the will of John Pryse of Gogerddan, 1584 (see ref.), and a lease of a property in Aberdyfi (Aberdovey) made by Sir Richard Pryse in 1604/5. James Pryse married into the family of Ynysymaengwyn, also in the locality of Tywyn. The series contains title deeds of properties mainly in the townships of Caethle, Aberdyfi (Aberdovey), Cefnrhos and Botalog, and St Cadfan’s lands, 1505-1668; mortgages, 1664-1676; family settlements which pre-date the start of the trust, 1591-1629, as well as deeds within the operation of the trust itself, 1660-1726. There is also a file of deeds of the Nanney and Lloyd families, which has been linked tentatively to the Caethle trust, 1681-1701.

Trust deeds of the Pughe family of Mathafarn (misc.)

Deeds and documents relating to miscellaneous trusts involving members of the Pughe family of Mathafarn, either as trustees or as parties to trust deeds of other family members. The two files relate to trusts involving Richard ap Hugh ap Ieuan, Mary Pughe and Richard Pughe, 1566-1654, and William and John Pughe, 1701-1718.

Timber harvesting books

A series of small notebooks recording the numbers of elm, larch, ash and oak trees felled on parts of the Gogerddan estate, their dimensions and sometimes the content of the timber, 1914-1923. One of the books employs a tally system to record the numbers of trees cut. The locations of the woods include Ponterwyd, Ffynon Caradog, Porthangel, Llanfihangel [Genau’r-glyn] and Lodge Park

The Priory, Cardigan, estate papers and title deeds

Miscelllaneous deeds and documents of the Priory estate, Cardigan, which was sold to Gogerddan by Edward Phillips in 1705, and was occupied by the Picton, Lloyd, Jones and Thomas families. It was conveyed to Albany Wallis in trust for John Pughe Pryse, 1770, and afterwards sold by the latter’s mother, Maria Charlotta Lloyd, to Thomas Johnes, 1774., The series comprises letters, [c. 1560], 1707, deeds, 1651-1721, an agreement to discharge debts, 1705-1708, a survey [c. 1705], rentals [1705x1774], and accounts and receipts, [post-1744] -1766.

The Pembrokeshire colliery dispute with Lord Milford : letters and papers

Two bundles of letters and papers deriving from a dispute initially involving Lewis Pryse of Woodstock and continuing subsequently between Edward Loveden Loveden of Buscot Park and Sir Richard Philipps, Lord Milford of Picton Castle, concerning Morteon Colliery in Pembrokeshire, 1773-1798. The disagreement centred on the continuation of mining by Lord Milford after the expiration of a lease originally granted to his father, Sir John Philipps, by Lewis Pryse in 1757, which included Moreton Colliery, a house in Saundersfoot and Stoney Bridge. Frequent reference is made to the extensive damage to the works of Edward Loveden Loveden, the reluctance of Lord Milford to make compensation, and the involvement of other proprietors such as James Child of Begeli and Henry Phelps of Norchard. There is evidence that lawsuits were commenced in the High Court of Chancery and the letters in the second file reflect the negotiations by the solicitors of both parties. The bulk of the material comprises the correspondence of Lewis Pryse, Edward Loveden Loveden, Lord Milford, Joseph Woolstenhulme of Taliaris and the solicitors involved in the case, together with relevant accounts, reports and legal papers.

The Cambrian Railways Company papers

Solicitors’ bills

Hughes of Aberystwyth, and Boys and Tweedie of Ely Place, London (later Tweedie of Lincolns Inn Fields), 1841-1913. The bills are very detailed, showing costs incurred for work on the Pryse family settlements, land sales and purchases, mortgages and civil lawsuits, usually over land ownership. Prominent areas of concern are the claims of Pryse Pryse as the executor of Edward Loveden Loveden; the executorship of the will of Pryse Pryse (d. 1849); the administration of Pryse Loveden (d. 1855); the lease and subsequent sale of the Buscot Park estate and parts of the Wootton and Woodstock estates; the marriage settlements of Pryse Loveden [and Margaretta Jane Price] and their son Pryse Loveden and Louisa Joan Lewes; the change of Pryse Loveden’s name and arms to Pryse Pryse, and his baronetcy, 1866; the rights of the Pryse family as lords of the manor of Genau’r-glyn and the Genau’r-glyn enclosures; a dispute with Sir Watkin Williams Wynn over sporting in the manor of Cyfeiliog; the sale of Gogerddan land to the Welsh Coast Railway; and purchases of Cwmcynfelyn, Glanfread, and the Penyberth and Penrhyn-coch estates.
