Papers, [1822]-1953, of John Rhŷs, comprising a considerable group of letters to him, 1860-1915, including those from fellow researchers, friends and family; material, 1864-1919, relating to his published works, including manuscript drafts of books, articles, and addresses; and research notes, 1836-[1920x1945]. There are also personal and professional papers, [1822]-1953, belonging to, and accumulated by, John Rhŷs; and papers, 1862-[1947], relating to various family members, among them a substantial body of material accumulated by Myvanwy Rhys for a proposed biography of her father.

Letters and cards from Whitley Stokes,

Over three hundred and twenty letters and cards, 1871-1909, from Whitley Stokes to John Rhŷs (ff. 1-364). Also included are four letters to John Rhŷs, [1875x1876], from William Stokes (ff. 365-368); three letters, 1875, 1893, and undated, from Margaret Stokes (ff. 369-372); a copy of The Irish passages in the Stowe Missal (Calcutta, 1881), edited by Whitley Stokes (ff. 373-386), together with Charles Plummer's article, 'Notes on the Stowe Missal' (1885) (ff. 387-390), and three letters, 1883, addressed to Charles Plummer from Whitley Stokes (ff. 391-395).
The letters and cards from Whitley Stokes to John Rhŷs have been separated and arranged into 2 folders and 3 bundles. Folder A1/3/5(i) comprises letters dated between July 1871 and August 1894 (foliated 1-87); folder A1/3/5(ii) comprises letters dated between September 1895 and January 1909, and undated (foliated 88-151); bundle A1/3/5(iii) comprises cards dated between September 1874 and October 1887 (foliated 152-215); bundle A1/3/5(iv) comprises cards dated between November 1887 and November 1895 (foliated 216-284); and bundle A1/3/5(v) comprises cards dated between November 1895 and January 1909 (foliated 285-364). The rest of the material is placed in folder A1/3/5(vi) and foliated 365-414.

Letters, 1831-1853, addressed to various recipients and forwarded at a later date to John Rhŷs. Two letters, dated 1916 and 1925, were possibly forwarded to Myvanwy Rhys; an additional letter, 1953, was sent to Idris Foster by M. V. Taylor. Also included are letters, and fragments of letters, which are unsigned and undated.

Papers, 1909-1911, relating to 'The Celtic inscriptions of Gaul, additions and corrections' by John Rhŷs, a paper originally delivered at the British Academy, and subsequently published in its Proceedings, vol. V (London, 1911). The file mostly comprises galley proofs and page proofs, 1911, some containing manuscript amendments and corrections by the author; together with photographs and sketches of plates included in the article, 1909-[1911].
