The series comprises three diaries 1874, 1877 and 1890, six artists' almanacks, 1896, 1901-1902, 1905-1907, and three notebooks, 1874, [?1905]-[?1912], in the hand of H. Clarence Whaite. The contents in the main refer to exhibition dates and details of pictures sent to exhibitions, private viewing dates, and dates of meetings, but there are some references to letters received from various correspondents, and details of a personal nature.

The items include papers relating to art publications, 1877-1911, papers relating to artists' materials, 1863-1911, papers relating to funds and memorials etc., 1872-1911, and papers relating to art schools, art lectures, etc., 1866-1911. Also included are various art magazines and journals, 1869-1907, printed books and booklets relating to art, 1845-1903, and press cuttings relating to art topics, 1866-1911.
The series comprises revenue accounts statements and balance sheets of the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, 1891-1910.
