Nelson Mandela freedom ceremony,

Material relating to Nelson Mandela's visit to the city of Cardiff in June 1998, where he was given the Freedom of the City. Includes correspondence between ACTSA Cymru (and others) and Cardiff County Council regarding details of event arrangements, a letter of invitation and map of area, draft notes and a final tribute written by Hanif Bhamjee (Secretary, ACTSA Cymru) to be included in the proceedings, news cuttings, copies of letters sent to newspaper and magazine editors, invitation lists and a copy of Nelson Mandela's speech delivered at Wembley,1990. Also a large-format photocopy of the photo album presented to Mr Mandela by members of the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) during the ceremony.

Nelson Mandela,

Material relating to Nelson Mandela, covering his early life and imprisonment in South Africa through to his role as Deputy Leader, and then President, of the African National Congress (ANC). File comprises leaflets, copies of speeches, newsletters, copies of public statements, news cuttings, a printed history of the trial leading to his imprisonment in 1964, the Order of Ceremony for the Honorary Freeman of the Borough of Islwyn, 1986, and 70th birthday tribute at Wembley, 1988.

Nuclear disarmament,

Material relating to the joint Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND) campaign for ending nuclear collaboration by Western governments and others with the apartheid regime in South Africa. File contains notes, draft briefings and reports, meeting resolutions, flyers, press releases and other printed matter.

Volume containing details of members, regional officers, contact details, business cards for associates and media, diary events, office messages and some financial details.

Oil embargo (Shell),

Circulars, information sheets and other campaign material relating to the AAM campaign against the supply of crude oil to South Africa, particularly the Royal Dutch/Shell Oil Company.

Printed and published material collected by WAAM in relation to the oil embargo placed on South Africa and Namibia in 1980. Includes reports by the AAM, the Shipping Research Bureau, the Counter Information Services (CIS) and studies published by the UN Centre Against Apartheid in their 'Notes and Documents' series.

Open letter campaign,

A briefing and flyer on the Anti-Apartheid Movement "Open Letter to John Major" campaign. The purpose of the campaign was to exert pressure via local MPs on the British government, so that they would take action to encourage the South African regime to enter into negotiations regarding a Constituent Assembly and Interim Government.

Leaflets and pamphlets produced by a wide range of groups supporting anti-apartheid initiatives including the United Nations, the Commonwealth Secretariat, Christian Aid, UNESCO, the Mozambique Angola Committee, the International Defence Aid Fund (IDAF), Action Aid, and the Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), amongst others.

Peace and democracy in Angola,

Material relating to the ACTSA campaign 'Towards Peace and Democracy in Angola' comprising campaign guidelines, Angola Emergency Campaign meeting minutes, circulars, press releases, reports and a 1995 issue of the Angola Peace Monitor.

Poets against apartheid,

Material relating to an anthology, "Poets against Apartheid/Beirdd yn erbyn Apartheid", published by the Wales Anti-Apartheid Movement (WAAM) including letters, typescripts of poetry, news cuttings and a photocopy of the front cover of the publication.

Political prisoners and detainees,

Material relating to Anti-Apartheid Movement (AAM) campaigns for the release of political prisoners in South Africa including Walter Sisulu, the Sharpville 6, the Pretoria Twelve, the Moroka Three and James Mange amongst others. File comprises press cuttings, reports, press statements, circulars, copies of a letters written by various prisoners (including Ahmed Kathrada, from his cell in Robben Island Prison), a typescript copy of "Operation Mayibuye," SATIS publications, and letters and briefings from the ANC. Also Amnesty International reports concerning apartheid imprisonment and execution.

Protest song sheets,

Collection of New City Songster song books, 1970-1973, and sheet-music and lyrics, mainly of Peggy Seeger and Ewan MacColl songs. Some of these have later alternative and amended lyrics in the hand of Hanef Bhamjee.

Publicity and marketing,

Promotional material distributed by ACTSA Wales to encourage support of the organisation and its activities, to promote membership, and to publicise events and publications of its affiliates. Comprises leaflets for specific initiatives such as dignity for women, fair compensation for South Africans working for the British company Cape, Shosholoza aids and various other health projects, reconstruction and development in Southern Africa, and solidarity with Southern Africa in general. Also includes promotional leaflets for Peter Hain's "Sing the Beloved Country" and a copy of a booklet produced in tribute to Mike Terry (Executive Secretary, Anti-Apartheid Movement, 1975-1994) celebrating his life and work.
