Benjamin Thomas ('Myfyr Emlyn') sermons,

A group of unbound notebooks containing notes of sermons, in Welsh and English, by Benjamin Thomas ('Myfyr Emlyn'), successively Baptist minister at Newcastle Emlyn, Penarth and Narberth. Most of the sermons are undated, but a few belong to the period 1864-1873. Some notes are written on the dorse of printed matter addressed to 'Myfyr Emlyn' - circular appeals on behalf of testimonials for the Rev. John Evans, Abercanaid, Merthyr, 1867, and W. Morgan Evans, 'Seren Cymru' Office, Carmarthen, [1884], and on behalf of the building funds of Penarth English Baptist Church, 1873, and Granby Row Baptist Church, Manchester [undated]. Formerly D. Miscellaneous documents:. (1). Memorandum of agreement, 25 Nov. 1851, between John Walters Philipps of Aberglasney, co. Carm., esq., and Benjamin Williams of Wenallt, p. Troedyraur, co. Card., tailor, for the lease of a house and garden (1/4 acre) lately erected by the said Benjamin Williams in p. Troedyraur. Term: lives of the said Benjamin Williams and Elizabeth, his wife, of the respective ages of 30 and 31 years. Annual rent: 5s. (2). Institution of John Roberts, clerk, [afterwards Baptist minister, Glynneath], to the vicarage of Llangeler, Carmarthenshire, 12 April 1865. (3). Probate of the will (dated 27 April 1871) of David Evans (d. 29 April 1871), late of Penclawddisaf, p. Penboyr, co. Carm., farmer, 31 May 1871. The legatees were testator's three sisters Hannah Davies, wife of David Davies of Gwarcwm, parish of Llanllwny, Carmarthenshire, Sarah Jones, wife of Samuel Jones of Nantygarreg, parish of Llangeler, Carmarthenshire, farmer, and Dinah Davies, wife of Samuel Davies of Suchbant, near Newcastle Emlyn, farmer, John Jones, son of the said Sarah Jones, Margaret Jones, daughter of testator's deceased sister Mary, Mary Thomas of Llwyndafydd, parish of Llangeler, widow and innkeeper. The Rev. John Roberts of Llangeler Vicarage was appointed sole executor. (4). Order, 4 May 1877, by W. Basil Jones, bishop of St Davids, in pursuance of the Ecclesiastical Dilapidations Act, 1871, that the repairs of the buildings of the benefice of Llangeler, Carmarthenshire, are those stated in the accompanying schedule and that the estimated cost amounts to £ 142.19.6. The schedule refers to repairs to Llangeler Vicarage, Cottage near Schoolroom, Zoar and Common Allotment on Llangeler Mountain. (5). Valuations of the effects of the late Rev. Benjamin Williams of Wenallt, parish of Troedyraur, Cardiganshire, dec. 7 Dec. 1891 (furniture, £ 5; gold watch and chain, £10; books, £10), together with funeral and other accounts submitted to his executors; a form of account, 23 Nov. 1892, of succession in real property of Elizabeth Williams, wife of Ivor Williams, of Wenallt, Troedyraur, Rhydlewis, R. S. O., Llandyssul, on the death of Benjamin Williams; a receipt, 6 April 1892, from W. Evans George to Mrs Elizabeth Williams for £11.18.5, for preparing and proving the will of the Rev. Benjamin Williams; and a receipt, 7 April 1893, from the same to Mr Ivor Williams for 10s.6 for preparing and passing succession accounts. (6). A group of six letters, in Welsh, 1891-1892 and undated, from M. Jones, 6 Ivorites Row, Glynneath, to her sister [at Wenallt]. They relate entirely to the writer's health and her proposal to visit the recipient. The following extract from one of the letters may be quoted: 'os dygwyddaf farw heb eich gweled chwi na un or bechgin peydywch a gwerthy y clock fe fydde well genif y ty Cwrdd bethel [i.e. Glynneath Baptist Church] ei gael nid oes ei debyg yn gael ei wneyd nawr ag yr oedd cymeynt o olwg gyda Mr Roberts [the Baptist minister] arno a wedi taly saith giny am dano ...'. (7). Agreement, 18 Oct. 1894, between (a) Frederick Lewis Lloyd Philipps of Pentyparc, Pembrokeshire, esq., and Elizabeth Francis Lloyd Philipps, his wife, and (b) Ivor Price Williams of Wenallt, parish of Troedyraur, Cardiganshire, farmer, for the lease of a field called Park penbank fach with the cottage thereon, being part of the farm and lands called Penbank, parish of Troedyraur. (8). Four receipts, 1911-1914, from C. Froodvale Davies, agent to the Aberglasney Estate, to Mr Ivor Williams and Mrs Elizabeth Williams, for the payments of rents respectively for a field being part of Penybank, and Wenallt Cottage. (9). Probate of the will (dated 5 Aug. 1917) of Mary Jones (d. 19 Oct. 1917) of Wenallt, Troedyraur, Cardiganshire, spinster, 22 Feb. 1918. Testator bequeathed her entire estate to her sister Elizabeth Williams and appointed her nephew David Pryse Williams to be her sole executor. Inset is a receipt, 18 March 1918, from W. Evans George & Sons, to the Rev. D. Pryse Williams for the payment of probate charges of £2.17.6. Formerly D. Pryse Williams 346.

Papers extracted from the diaries of Benjamin Williams ('Gwynionydd'), including letters to him from W. Spurrell, Carmarthen, 1883, enclosing payments for contributions to Yr Haul, C. E. D. Morgan-Richardson, Cardigan, clerk to the Trustees of Mrs Bevan's Charity Schools, 1883, enclosing a cheque for £3 being three months' pension due to 'Gwynionydd' as one of the late masters of the charity, and S. Evans, the Vicarage, Llandovery (undated), enclosing the section, plan and book of reference for the parish of Llanddulas in connection with the Llangumnerth, Neath & Brecon Railway; draft letters from 'Gwynionydd' to the bishop [of St Davids], touching the repair of Tir-yr-abad church, and the writer's oversight of Cwmdwr and the payment of his stipend for the same; vouchers to 'Gwynionydd', 1880-1883, in respect of the purchase of food, books and periodicals (Canwyll y Cymru, a dictionary, Y Dywysogaeth), rent for Wenallt Cottage, work at Tir-yr-abad Church, shoemaking and shoe repairing, harness, the use of a pony, paint and painting, etc.; and presscuttings (the acceptance by Llewellyn Morgan Williams, son of 'Gwynionydd', of the living of Pontlotyn, etc.).
