[Sailors at work]

Five sailors at work on the deck of a merchant vessel. One is attending to chains, the others are involved in coiling a rope. Land and white clouds are visible behind them.

[Fruit]

A makeshift stall selling various fruits including breadfruits. A shopping basket is propped up on the breadfruits on the right of the picture.

[Washing up]

A young woman in the dress of a domestic servant sitting on the ground washing dishes in a bucket of water. Behind her is the sea.

[Merchant seamen]

Four seamen, one only partially visible, coiling a rope. Their headgear is suggestive of a tropical climate. Probably taken aboard the 'Eros' on which Joy Thomas sailed to Jamaica in 1937.

[Dressing table]

A bedrom scene with a garment strung across two hooks on the left of the picture, on the right is a narrow dressing table on which is a lit candle in a holder.

[Still Life]

Corner of a window photographed from the interior in which a framed photograph, an aspidistra and a vase are visible.

[Sian in Paisley Scarf]

Sian, daughter of Ifor & Joy Thomas, aged about seven years old, wearing a paisley scarf and standing next to a highly textured feature, perhaps part of a sculpture.

[Ifor Thomas on stage]

Ifor Thomas wearing a highly ornate gown and seemingly on a stage set. The set is dominated by two religious icons. Ifor is looking downwards and away from the camera.

[Jamaican boy]

Photograph of a boy wearing a short-sleeved white shirt and a school cap. A wooden box on which is printed 'Virol Limted London' is strung around his neck by a piece of string attached to two nails in the sides of the box. The box contains pencils. This believed to have been taken by Joy Thomas (nee Morgan) on her scholarship to Jamaica in 1937.

[Cow]

A solitary cow looking over a fence running from left to right across the photo. The cow is framed by trees on either side.

[Soldier]

A three quarter portrait of a British soldier facing left and wearing a steel helmet. His two hands are gripping the barrel of his gun.

Mrs Joy Thomas, 65 York Road, Guildford, Surrey.
