Griffith family settlements (John Griffith (3))

The file comprises articles of agreement and a bond for observance of covenants prior to the marriage of John Griffith (3) of Garn and Jane Hughes of Weeg, 1762, containing, among other stipulations, the provision for Jane of a life annuity of £80 out of her husband's estate in Henllan and St Asaph and instructions to the trustees to raise £3000 to be used as he should direct; both stipulations later contributed to financial disagreements between Jane and her son, which were finally settled in 1801. The file also contains a bond by John Griffith, dated 1783, to pay £200 and interest to his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Hughes, in trust for Jane.

Griffith family settlements (John Wynne Griffith)

The file comprises settlements involving John Wynne Griffith of Garn, including his marriage settlement with Jane Wynne of Plasnewydd, 1785, preceded by a recovery of the Denbighshire and Flintshire estates, 1784; a settlement between J.W.G. and his mother, Jane Griffith, 1801, to compromise on disagreements regarding her annuity and interest on £3000 from her husband's estate, and to compensate her sister, Elizabeth, for non-payment of debts and interest on a legacy bequeathed by the will of her aunt, Mary Hughes (1782); disentailments of the Caernarfonshire estate, 1811, and the Denbighshire and Flintshire estates, 1814; a subsequent conveyance of 1814 by John Wynne Griffith to a trustee of his eldest surviving son, Robert, of lands in Gyffin and Caerhun, in return for raising £6000 for his younger children out of the estates in Denbighshire and Merionethshire which Robert had recently inherited from his mother; the marriage settlement of Harriet Griffith and John Price of Brynbella, 1827; and a new financial settlement to benefit J.W.G.'s surviving younger children, 1833, necessitated by the deaths of Robert Griffith in 1819 and Richard Augustus Griffith, whom Robert had named one of his heirs, in 1831.

Griffith of Garn

Griffith of Pengwern

The file comprises a pedigree showing the descent of Robert ab Gruffydd of Pengwern, copied from Harleian MS no. 1971.

Hafod estate, Llechryd and Penporchell, Llanefydd

The file comprises deeds for properties on the Hafod estate, in the townships of Llechryd and Penporchell, purchased by George Griffith from John Richard Heaton in 1856. In 1778, Thomas Hughes of Bronwhylfa, St Asaph, had purchased Hafod, Merllyn, a mill and Nant from the trustees of the will of Sir Lynch Salusbury Cotton, and in 1787 he sold all four properties to Robert Watkin Wynne of Plasnewydd. The latter mortgaged Hafod, Merllyn and the mill in 1790, and Nant and another property, Ty Celyn, in 1798. The Hafod properties, like most of the Plasnewydd estate, came into the ownership of the Heatons. John Heaton and his eldest son, John Richard Heaton, sold off Merllyn to George Griffith in 1837, followed by Bryndeunydd, Gwydr, Erw Streat, Tyn-celyn, Vach, Hafod and Pwll y glomen in 1856. The properties were shortly afterwards mortgaged by G.G. to Rev. George Powell and others, and were reconveyed to him in 1862. In 1890 W.D.W. Griffith made a conveyance to Denbigh Corporation of certain rights over parts of Hafod estate in connection with Henllan water supply, and in 1903 an agreement for laying of a new line of pipes.

House and garden, Sandy Lane, Denbigh

The file comprises deeds for a house and a garden bordering on Sandy Lane, Denbigh. In 1704, Elizabeth Roberts of Denbigh had devised the garden by will to Robert Hughes, corviser, at which time it lay between the lands of John Wynne, esq., on the east, land of Jane Jones, widow, on the west, Penlan Ditch on the north and Sandy Lane on the south. Robert Hughes sold the garden in 1712 to Richard Evans and Mary, his wife, whose son, Edward Evans, sold it, together with a house, to William Davies of Henllan in 1768. In the same year, William Davies willed the property to his son, also called William Davies, living in Audlem, Cheshire, who finally sold it to Mary Wynne of Denbigh in 1789.

The file comprises a bond by Rice Jones of Oxfordshire to Margaret Salusbury for performance of covenants in deeds of even date.

House in Llanefydd

The file comprises a deed of sale by Edward Williams of Beaumaris to Samuel Williams of Plas Coch, Denbighshire, of a messuage in Llanefydd, 1777.

House in Lleweni, Cae Tan y Skybor, Groffte Palmant, etc., Henllan

The file comprises three abstracts of title, 1686-1749, 1686-1786, 1686-1801, to a messuage in Lleweni and lands called Cae Tan y Skybor, Groffte Palmant, etc., which John Williams purchased from Dorothy Marle or Marlington and her husband, William, in about 1801 and a schedule of deeds, followed by a mortgage to Nathaniel Minshall of Pen y Palmant, in 1819. John Griffith (2) of Garn was vouchee to a recovery in 1749.

Household management

The file comprises a list of domestic and personal items taken to college by John Wynne Griffith, 1781, an inventory of furniture and utensils taken by Jane Griffith the elder when she moved to Denbigh, 1791, an inventory of linen, rules for management and behaviour of servants, and printed advertisements.

Houses and gardens in Lower Ward, Middle Lane and Penybank's Hill, Denbigh

The file comprises deeds, 1732-1800, for a house and several gardens in Lower Ward, Middle Lane and Penybank's Hill, Denbigh Between 1739 and 1749, a gardener named Thomas Humphreys purchased a messuage and several gardens in Denbigh. Under the terms of his his will, proved 1762, his wife, Mary Davies, received most of his property, which was inherited in turn by her nearest kin, Edward Parry of Cader, Llanrhaeadr-yng-nghinmeirch. The premises descended to the latter's son, David Parry, who sold all his father's property in Denbigh to Mary Wynne in 1800. -- The deeds include a mortgage of 1732, deeds of sale to Thomas Humphreys, 1739, 1744, 1749, his will, 1762, a pedigree showing Edward Parry's relationship to Thomas Humphrey's widow, the will of Edward Parry, proved 1783, a copy of part of David Parry's marriage settlement, 1797, showing his right to dispose of the premises in Denbigh, and the deed of sale to Mary Wynne, 1800.

Hughes family settlements (incorporating Roberts of Mathebrwd and Gwydir)

The file comprises the marriage settlement of Robert ap Thomas and Mary, daughter of Robert ap Hugh ap Moris, all of Mathebrwd, 1654, of lands in Mathebrwd which were purchased by Mary's brother, Hugh Roberts, to become part of the Llwyn Gronw estate, in 1700; and the marriage settlement of Hugh Roberts [of Gwydir] and Dorothy Frizer of Trovarth, 1665, great grandparents of Jane Griffith (née Hughes).

The file comprises a grant of annuity by Anne Hughes, widow of Robert Hughes, 1670, and articles of agreement, 1676, by the representative of John ap Richard (alias Evans) another claimant to Cae'r berllan and Nant yr Helfa, to release right and title to William John ap Richard; prenuptial and postnuptial settlements of John Williams of Cae'r berllan and Grace Williams of Coed Mawr, 1686, 1695; marriage settlement of Owen Hughes, second son of Hugh Roberts of Gwydir, and Jane Evans of Gymanog, 1699; a surrender by Grace Williams of Cae'r berllan, 1732/3, of the lands in Tybrith which had been granted as her jointure by her marriage settlement of 1686, in return for an annuity; disentailments of Llwyn Gronw and Cae'r berllan by Robert Hughes, 1733, presumably in anticipation of his marriage to Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Williams of Chester, in the following year.

The file comprises prenuptial and postnuptial settlements of Maurice Wynn of Havodgregog and Grace Hughes of Gwydir (aunt of Jane Griffith, née Hughes), 1732, 1734/5; disentailment of the Havodgregog estate and property in Pwllheli, 1756; the marriage settlement of Jane, daughter of Grace Wynn of Havodgregog and Zacheus Hughes of Trefan, 1759.

Hughes of Cae'r berllan

The file comprises a pedigree sketched on a printed leaflet, [post-1810] and a fuller, typed version by T. A. Glenn, showing the title of the Hughes family to Cae'r berllan and Garth Garmon lands, and their connection with the family of Williams, probably compiled c. 1934.

Kay Bach, Castell

The file comprises deeds for Kay Bach in the township of Castell, which became part of the lands of Elizabeth Hughes, inherited from her father, Thomas Williams of Chester. It was originally purchased by Hugh ap Robert of Caerhun from John ap Harry ap David, probably in 1616, and was devised by will in 1623 to his eldest son, Richard ap Hugh ap Robert, with remainder to his other offspring. It is not clear how the land descended to Thomas Williams. Kay Bach was one of several properties in Caerhun and Chester leased to a trustee by Robert and Elizabeth Hughes in 1737.
