Letters to John Griffith and family

The series comprises letters by non-family correspondents to John Griffith (2) of Garn, 1733-1758, John Griffith (3), 1758-1791, Jane Griffith, 1761-1805, and Ann Maria Griffith, 1785. Recurrent subjects are management of the Denbighshire estate, problems surrounding the purchase of Gwaun Dwysog in Henllan, and the education of the young John Wynne Griffith.

Letters to miscellaneous recipients

The series comprises letters, 1680-1882, to recipients who were not directly related to the Griffith family of Garn, but who had personal or business connections with them, together with a small number of letters where neither the author nor the recipient can be identified.

The series comprises marriage settlements and other family settlements of the owners of Garn, involving John Griffith (2), 1723-1755, John Griffith (3), 1762, 1783, John Wynne Griffith, 1784-1833, and George Griffith, 1835-1836, 1863, with related deeds and documents of the type normally associated with disentailment.

Griffith family probate records (Garn)

The series comprises probate records of the Griffith family of Garn, 1685-1835, including four of its owners, John Griffith (1), (2) and (3), 1685, 1759 and 1791 respectively, and John Wynne Griffith, 1835. A notable omission is the will of Robert Griffith (died 1818), to which specific references are made both in the family settlement of 1833 and in the will of his father, John Wynne Griffith, 1835.

The series comprises papers deriving from John Griffith's trusteeship of Cadwallader Wynne's Voelas estate, 1712-1763, and John Wynne Griffith's trusteeship of Robert Watkin Wynne's Plasnewydd and Garthmeilio estates, 1783-1843.

The series includes papers relating to the Denbighshire militia, 1801-1813, 1871-1876, and papers concerning the court martial of Capt. John Davies and others of the Western Regiment of Denbighshire Local Militia, 1813.

The series comprises loose accounts, 1708-1836, and a notebook containing accounts, 1764-1768, of profits from sale of estate produce, expenditure on agricultural implements, livestock, seeds, fertiliser, building materials and labour, together with an unrelated Greek and Latin vocabulary.
