Legal papers

The series includes petitions to court, writs, memoranda, bills of complaint, defendants' answers, cases with opinions of counsel, affidavits, interrogatories and depositions of witnesses, jury lists, copies and abstracts of deeds, and pedigrees to prove title. A large part of the records comprises disputes over title to land or inheritance, which took place in the High Court of Chancery or on the equity side in the Court of Great Sessions. The most substantial of them concern Cae'rberllan and Nant yr Helfa, 1672-1695, the Flintshire (Cwyber) estate, 1687-1749, 1787, Tyddyn Glan y Ffynnon, Gwaun Dwysog, etc., 1745-1754, the estate of John Griffith (2) of Garn, 1758, 1764, and the will of Charlotte Botfield of Norton Hall, 1829-1832.

Hughes family settlements (Gwydir, Weeg, Llwyn Gronw, Cae'r berllan)

The series comprises marriage settlements and other settlements of the Hughes family of Cae'r berllan and those related to them, including Hugh Roberts of Gwydir and his sister, Mary, both children of Robert of Hugh ap Moris of Mathebrwd, 1654, 1665; Williams and Hughes of Cae'r berllan and Llwyn Gronw 1670-1733; Wynn of Havodgregog, 1732-1759; and Elizabeth Hughes of Denbigh, 1784.

The series comprises inventories of household items removed from Garn for specific purposes, instructions for management of servants, printed advertisements, 1781-[1838], lists of garden seeds and plants [1784x1834].

Griffith family settlements (Garn)

The series comprises marriage settlements and other family settlements of the owners of Garn, involving John Griffith (2), 1723-1755, John Griffith (3), 1762, 1783, John Wynne Griffith, 1784-1833, and George Griffith, 1835-1836, 1863, with related deeds and documents of the type normally associated with disentailment.

Griffith family probate records (Garn)

The series comprises probate records of the Griffith family of Garn, 1685-1835, including four of its owners, John Griffith (1), (2) and (3), 1685, 1759 and 1791 respectively, and John Wynne Griffith, 1835. A notable omission is the will of Robert Griffith (died 1818), to which specific references are made both in the family settlement of 1833 and in the will of his father, John Wynne Griffith, 1835.

The series comprises papers deriving from John Griffith's trusteeship of Cadwallader Wynne's Voelas estate, 1712-1763, and John Wynne Griffith's trusteeship of Robert Watkin Wynne's Plasnewydd and Garthmeilio estates, 1783-1843.

Estate accounts (miscellaneous counties)

The series comprises loose accounts, 1708-1836, and a notebook containing accounts, 1764-1768, of profits from sale of estate produce, expenditure on agricultural implements, livestock, seeds, fertiliser, building materials and labour, together with an unrelated Greek and Latin vocabulary.

Estate accounts (Denbighshire)

The series consists of accounts deriving from agricultural management of the Denbighshire estate, 1759-1849, and from the maintenance and repair of buildings, 1799-1911.

Estate accounts (Caernarfonshire)

The series comprises an account drawn up in 1740 for money received and disbursed by the agent (name not given) for Ffrith Bodvel, Caerhun, between 1737 and 1740.

Enclosures and commons notices (Denbighshire)

The series comprises a printed copy of the Enclosure Act, 1802, handwritten abstract by George Griffith, printed notices for sale of allotments of common land in Henllan, Llansannan and Denbigh Green, 1803-1804, Henllan, Betws Abergele, Llansanffraid and Llaneilian-yn Rhos, 1823, official demand notices for rents due on encroachments, 1846-1848, with a copy declaration on the legality of an enclosure at Bryn Issa, Llanefydd, 1846.

Domestic accounts

The series comprises accounts for foodstuffs and household items, 1744-1885, brewing, 1790-1827, and pictures purchased, 1845-1854.

The series comprises personal diaries of Jane Griffith, widow of John Griffith (3) of Garn, all running from January to December for each year.

Diaries of George Griffith

The series comprises diaries of George Griffith. The diary for 1827 covers January-May, and all the others cover January-December for their respective years.

Denbighshire militia papers

The series includes papers relating to the Denbighshire militia, 1801-1813, 1871-1876, and papers concerning the court martial of Capt. John Davies and others of the Western Regiment of Denbighshire Local Militia, 1813.
