Mon., and Upper Bullinghop, Herefordshire (C 121/27), including copy pre- and post-nuptial settlements of James Jones of Dolley, p. Llanfihangel Rhydithion, gent., and Tabitha Bywater of p. Llanbadarn Fynydd, 1748 and 1759 (C 121/9, 12) and bills and receipts for repairing the said m's, 1774-5 (C 121/25). Purchased by John Walsh, 1st Lord Ormathwaite, from the Governors of Queen Anne's Bounty and the incumbents of Llangowa and Upper Bullinghope for £3,800 on 12 Aug. 1868. Copy Letter to J. F. from Dr Johnson [published in R.W. Chapman, ed., The Letters of Samuel Johnson, vol. III (Oxford, 1952), pp. 14-16], together with annotations by his daughter Margaret, 1783 (Fb 2/1) and a letter from ? Hallam enquiring as to the whereabouts of the Benns [i.e. Margaret and her husband John Benn].

Poems copied and/or composed by J. F. and/or his son Francis Fowke during his/their stay in India, of little literary merit but throwing a little light on the British community in India. Included is a poem to Sir William Jones the orientalist and jurist together with his reply, [1783 x 6] (Fb 3/1, 3) and poems relating to an accident that happened on-stage at the theatre at Benares, 1786 (Fb 3/7, 13).

Letter Books of John Walsh together with an index of recipients. Most of the letters relate to his business and estate affairs. Other subjects touched upon are his constituency work as M.P. for the city of Worcester, 1762-72 (FC 1, pp. 5-7, 51-2, 69-70, 86-7, 89-90; FC 2, pp. 92-4, 111-16, 119, 152); election of M.P. and mayors for the borough of Pontefract, Yorkshire, and to election riots there, 1768-72 (FC 1, pp. 61-4, 68, 73, 76-8, 80-8; FC 2, pp. 96-7, 105, 111-13, 127, 156-7) [cf. FC 7/61]; a reward to lord Clive for his services, 1767 (FC 1, pp. 36-7) and to Clive's election, as an M.P., 1768 (FC 1, pp. 61-2). Some of the most prominent recipients are William Pitt, 1767 (FC 1, pp. 36-7); Sir Lawrence Dundas, 1768 (FC 1, pp. 63-4); Viscount Barrington the Secretary of State for War, 1768 (FC 1, pp. 68, 80, 84-5); Lord Camden, 1769 (FC 1, pp. 88-9) and the Marquis of Granby, 1768 (FC 1, p. 83). There was, apparently, a third vol. which, to judge from the index, included copies of three letters to Benjamin Franklin, 1772.

Letters to John Walsh arranged and numbered by him according to the date of receipt together with an index of correspondents (FC 4/1). Correspondents include General Conway (FC 4/44, 131, 181); George Yonge, Secretary of State for War (FC 4/92, 115-16, 121) and Lady Clive (FC 4/114). Amongst the subjects discussed are the Worcester militia (FC 4/2-141 passim); the torpedo fish (FC 4/19); the building of a new town hall at Pontefract, Yorkshire (FC 4/28, 83, 102); politics (FC 4/63) and the removal of Warren Hastings by the East India Co. (FC 4/129). Original bundle. Enclosed is a list drawn up by the 6th Lord Ormathwaite of 28 letters removed from this bundle and deposited at the India Office Library in 1963 [now in MSS. Euro D 546/32. A comparison of FC 4/1 with FC 4/2-142 and Lord Ormathwaite's list suggests that 21 letters appear to be missing from this bundle.

Letters to John Walsh including letters from Henry Strachey, 1791 (FC 10/3); Mr Strachey, 1792 (FC 10/25-6, 32); Thomas Spence, 1792 (FC 10/29, 43); Edward Bancroft, 1792 (FC 10/42) and the Hon. Richard Molesworth, 1793 (FC 10/77). The correspondence includes a letter soliciting John Walsh's vote in favour of Jacob Wilkinson in the election of a director of the East India Co., 1792 (FC 10/17), a reference to the 'levelling spirit' gaining ground in Ireland, 1792 (FC 10/26) a letter describing the current political situation in co. Rad., 1794 (FC 10/88) and a letter from John Walsh to Mrs Strachey discussing the merits or otherwise of Eastbourne and Brighton, 1794 (FC 10/10, 93). Original bundle labelled 'Old letters found amongst my Uncle's papers'. Enclosed is a list as in FC 4 of 38 letters deposited at the India Office Library (now MSS Euor. D 546/33] and one letter deposited at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich. A great deal of the correspondence, 1790-4, is missing. For example, only one letter survives for 1790, dated 28 Oct., and numbered 119 by John Walsh. The letters for 1791-4 have not been numbered by John Walsh.

Index to a map of the borough of Pontefract, Yorkshire, giving particulars of owners, late owners and boundaries of the burgages, 1767 (FC 11/1) and a List Of Burgages in the said borough belonging to Lord Gallway and John Walsh containing a description of the burgages, the names, residence and landlords of persons to whom the burgages were conveyed; whether they voted at the elections held in Mar. and Dec. 1768 and whether they did fealty and voted for the mayor (ff. 1v-18); an alphabetical list of burgesses and to whom they voted at the election held in Dec. 1768 (ff. 20v - 2) and a list of burgesses who did not poll at the said election and stating why they did not do so, [1769] (FC 11/2) and Advertisement Of Sale of John Walsh's estate in the said borough including the whole of the burgage holdings belonging to the said estate, [?early 1790s] (FC 11/3). [John Walsh purchased from John Pitt about 75 burgages owned by him and about 22 burgages jointly owned by Pitt and Lord Gallway for £16,000 in 1766. John Walsh's nomination at the Mar. election was Sir Henry Strachey who came bottom of the poll. This election, however, was voided by a committee of the House of Commons on account of the riot during the election and Sir Henry was returned with Lord Gallway at the ensuing by-election held in Dec. 1768. In 1783 a committee of the House of Commons overturned previous decisions and declared the right of election to be in the inhabitant householders and not burgage owners who had been put into possession of burgage, by John Walsh and Lord Gallway for the purpose of the election of 1768, see Sir Lewis Namier & John Brooke, The House of Commons 1754-90, 1 (London, 1985), pp. 437-8 and for the electoral clashes between John Walsh and Lord Gallway on the one hand and the inhabitant householders on the other see some of the letters in FC 1-2, 5. Miscellaneous Papers including a note and account of a 'motion' or 'moving' plant at Dr Hope's botanical gardens, 1776 (FC 19/1-2); a copy of the Vedam in the Sanskrit language obtained for John Walsh by his nephew Francis Fowke in Benares in 1777 (FC 18/3); two vols containing the Sanskrit alphabet and specimens of Sanskrit writing, [1770s] (FC 19/4-5) and a memorandum relating to the Queen's visit to Warfield, 1784 (FC 19/7).

Deeds relating to the man. of Cefnllys, the castle and site of Cefnllys, the bor. and liberties of the same, and m's called Grayne Llin and Dolley Glisson, p. Llandeglau, and y llyne hirion and y Kyver Bach ar Twyn heligge, p. Cefnllys, all of which were purchased by Sir Standish Hartstonge in 1698 (C 5/28-9), and including an exemplification of a decree in Chancery in a cause relating to the said man. in 1634, 1636 (C 5/1). Miscellaneous Papers relating mainly to the debts of Griffith Jones, previous owner of Trewern and other properties, and to lawsuits between Sir Standish Hartstonge and Mr John Weaver, clerk [possibly the Puritan minister of that name who was ejected from Old Radnor in 1660 and from Knill in 1662 and who ministered to a small congregation in Hereford from 1689 until his death in 1712. He was forced to sell part of his estate because of financial difficulties. See Thomas Rees's History of Nonconformity in Wales 2nd ed. (London 1883, p. 151)].
