Wales,

Collections of correspondence, papers, cuttings and memoranda relating to Wales. Some Welsh material is so bulky that it forms separate classes, e.g. classes J, K, L relating to the University, National Library, National Museum, Coleg Harlech and the Gregynog Press. The core class H consists of papers relating to the Welsh institutions and organisations to which Thomas Jones was committed. Earliest in time are the papers relating to his service with the Welsh National Memorial Association campaign against TB in Wales and with the Welsh Insurance Commission, 1911-1916. The Welsh Outlook journal and press which he helped to found, dates from the same period. The bulk of the papers relate to social service work, particularly in south Wales, the formation of educational settlements, and the preservation of rural amenities. There is a small collection of material on Welsh education and good deal of rather diffuse documentation on Welsh social and cultural organisations. Some snippets relating to the problems of Wales as a national community have been bound into a single volume. Arranged into: Welsh National Memorial Association (TB), 30 Sept. 1910-10 Dec. 1945 (H 1); Welsh National Insurance Commission, 4 Dec. 1911-21 Dec. 1917 (H 2); Welsh National Insurance Commission and Welsh Board of Health, 1 Jan. 1918-12 June 1952 (H 3); Welsh Outlook, 13 Dec. 1913-3 Sept. 1919 (H 4); Welsh Outlook, 27 Aug. 1923-31 Dec. 1936 (H 5); Carnegie Endowment History of Wales during the War, 8 Feb. 1920-27 June 1929 (H 6); Social Service, South Wales, 9 March 1920-5 Feb. 1934 (H 7); Social Service, South Wales, 16 Feb. 1934-22 July 1953 (H 8); South Wales Settlements, 18 Jan. 1927-July 1952 (H 9); Merthyr Tydfil Settlement, 2 May 1929-29 Nov. 1934 (H 10); Merthyr Tydfil Settlement, 25 Jan. 1935- 2 Dec. 1938 (H 11); Merthyr Tydfil Settlement, 16 March 1939-26 Oct. 1948 (H 12); Welsh Education, General, 16 March 1915-March 1945 (H 13); Educational Facilities, South Wales Coalfield. NB. Later material relating to Wales may be found scattered throughout the collection. See, in particular, class J (University, Library and Museum), K (Coleg Harlech), L (Gregynog Press), R (Gregynog collection), U (Sir Henry Jones collection), V (Sir Percy Watkins collection), and W (General Correspondence). Thomas Jones personal and family papers in classes X, Y and Z also hold much material on Welsh affairs.
