Galley proofs

The file comprises galley proofs (incomplete, corrected) of the text of 'The Tutelar of the Place' published in Poetry, vol. XCVII, no. 4 (January 1961), pp. 203-9.

Manuscript

The file comprises manuscript text of 'The Hunt' with an introductory note. The original first page of the text has been cancelled and a later version of the beginning of the poem inserted. The time taken to read the script is noted, and the text is similar to the broadcast script in LS7/5.

Recording

The file comprises manuscript drafts and a typescript text of an introduction by David Jones to a reading by him of 'The Hunt' and of parts of In Parenthesis and The Anathemata. References to 'this record' suggest that the reading was recorded on disc.

The file comprises material concerning 'The Sleeping Lord', consisting of manuscript drafts and a typescript copy of an introductory note to the text published in Agenda (David Jones Special Issue, vol. 5, nos 1-3 (Spring-Summer 1967), pp. 28-54), a manuscript introductory note to a reading by David Jones of this work, a manuscript list of errata and corrigenda dated 5 May 1974 and manuscript notes on the text.

'In illo tempore'

The file contains a manuscript draft of an autobiographical piece mainly entitled by David Jones 'In illo Tempore' and 'for Fabers' with a draft list of contents of The Dying Gaul by Harman Grisewood.

Poetry Wales

The file contains manuscript drafts of an autobiographical piece written at the request of the editor of Poetry Wales, with eight pages of typescript, dated 'Harrow-on-the-Hill, Calan Gaeaf 1972' which was the outcome of the 64 pages of manuscript.

Autobiographical notes

The file comprises a typescript copy of 'D. J. Life for Jim Ede', 1935, with two similar photocopies; a typed letter in defence of David Jones' writing from Jean Mambrino, S.J; a typescript autobiographical article; typescript notes to coincide with slides about David Jones; and a typescript copy of 'New reading April 1968', a radio programme by Peter Orr.

The series comprises a manuscript draft of the letter. This letter to the Editor of The Catholic Herald, 9 September 1948, seems not to have been sent, and remained unpublished.

The file comprises a very considerable number of manuscript drafts of a lengthy essay (the drafts are paginated 1-96) by David Jones on medieval Welsh history. Most of these drafts are headed 'Appendix'; this essay was intended by David Jones to form an appendix to his 'Introduction to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner'.

The file comprises a complete manuscript text of 'An Introduction to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' prepared for typing, with instructions 'For typist & printer.' dated 8 Sept. 1963, numbered 1-51 in red ink.

The file comprises manuscript drafts of a footnote to 'An Introduction to The Rime of the Ancient Mariner' concerning the disallowing of the Christmas preface on Corpus Christi (see The Dying Gaul, p. 209).

The file comprises a manuscript draft of the text published in this volume as 'The Dying Gaul'. They have been written on a variety of papers, in pencil or ink. It is marked 'MS B' by David Jones in blue crayon. (See notes in the file by Harman Grisewood of the relation of this text to others, and also the notes interleaved by René Hague). The main text has been numbered on the bottom right hand corner of the page (638-684, 684a, 686-688, 688b, 689-99, 699a, 700-14, 714a, 714aa, 714b(2) , 714c-e, 715-29, 728a, 730-48, 748a).
