The file comprises a carbon copy of the 1935 typescript draft of the Preface, dated Christmas 1935 in the typescript, but with significant manuscript revisions by David Jones dated March 1st 1937. The corrections are similar but not the same as those in LP3/3. The 1937 typescript was made from this version.

Preface

The file comprises a final manuscript text of the Preface to the Anathemata, numbered 1-46 with gaps by David Jones. There is also a list of illustrations, also numbered page 1 and a note by Harman Grisewood.

Postcards

The file comprises postcards to David Jones from Jim Ede, Louis Bonnerot, Janet Stone, Harman Grisewood, Peter Levi, Douglas Cleverdon, Will Carter, Walter Shewring, Desmond Chute, Ben Nicholson, Prudence Pelham, Desirée Hirst, Lynette Roberts, Keidrych Rhys, Tom Burns, René Hague, Helen Sutherland and many other friends and family members, with also a Christmas card made by Ray Howard-Jones and a postcard from David Jones, 1915.

Portraits and lettering

The file comprises reproductions of artwork by David Jones: copies of lettering 'Et Hominum in principio...' (4 copies), 'pa geont haeled paet', 'iam redit et virgo...' (1956), 'his mother was like dew...', 'yn y gaeaf oer...'; copies of a self portrait, two different portraits of women, and two different shipping / storm pictures (1931 and undated); and prints of 'Jester and Imps at Brockley School Cantata' (2 copies) Walter Jones 1905; 'Anerchiad' W. David Jones 1912; stable and manger, WDJ 1919; and a deer by David Jones, 1904. David Jones has written behind some of the photographs, and some appear to have been pinned to a wall.

Poetry Wales

The file contains manuscript drafts of an autobiographical piece written at the request of the editor of Poetry Wales, with eight pages of typescript, dated 'Harrow-on-the-Hill, Calan Gaeaf 1972' which was the outcome of the 64 pages of manuscript.

The file comprises a copy of Poetry Book Magazine, Vol. 6, No. 5, Fall 1954, in which Poetry from Wales has been gathered together with an introduction by Raymond Garlick. It includes an extract of The Anathemata from 'Mabinogi's Liturgy'.

The file comprises typescript, manuscript and printed copies of poems by various authors (in many cases the author's name is not noted). Includes a typescript copy of a poem by Peter Levi entitled 'Thirty ways of drowning in the sea', with a letter from Alasdair Clayre at All Souls College, Oxford, dated 17 Sept. 1965, asking David Jones whether he would like 'a drawing or two drawings of yours to be used as illustrations for a limited edition of this poem?' (for drafts of a reply to this letter see A2/1), and typescript copies of poems by Charles Madge ('The Storming of the Brain', dated 2 July 1950), Dylan Thomas ('Elegy'), Saunders Lewis ('The Choice', translated by R. Wynne), Stefan George ('Come in the Park described as dead and see', translated by Vernon Watkins and signed by him), William Hayward, Herbert Read, and a translation of 'Wales' by Gwenallt Jones.

Poems by Hague and Grisewood

The file comprises a manuscript copy of a poem entitled 'The weeping Queen', with a note in the same hand signed René [Hague] and dated 22 January 1930; a typescript copy of three poems by Harman Grisewood, dated 1931, one entitled 'Rigor'; a typescript copy of two poems, one entitled 'Esurientes' (in an envelope marked 'Harman's Poems'); and a typescript and manuscript copy of an untitled poem. The hand appears to be that of René Hague.

Personalia

The group comprises personal documents, diaries, documents relating to David Jones' service during the First World War, papers relating to David Jones' father and to family funerals, medical records, financial papers, receipts and bills, and a list of David Jones' books.

Past and Present

The file comprises manuscript and typescript drafts of a letter to Granta which was unpublished since Granta had temporarily ceased publication. The manuscript version is a very rough draft of the start to the letter which differs in detail from the published version. The two typescript copies have been corrected by David Jones and are dated March 1953.

Passport and documents

The file comprises David Jones' passport, 1928-1938, two polling cards, 1950 and 1966, an award certificate from the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, 1919, two clothing voucher books, 1942-1943 and 1944-1945, food coupons, David Jones' entry for Debrett's Peerage, 1961 and a Radio Rentals payment booklet, 1964.

Parts IV-VII

The file comprises carbons of the 1935 typescript of the text, with part of Pt. IV (pp. 90-96), and the whole of the text of Parts. V-VII (pp. 98-129, 131-145 and 147-178). The revisions in the typescript (LP3/7) are repeated here with a few additional revisions. This copy has been marked for the printers and apparently has been used for setting up as it is marked off for the galley proofs.

Parts I-VII

The file comprises a final typescript of the whole text, Parts I-VII, numbered 1-177, with p. 178 wanting. There are slight revisions in pencil by David Jones, notably in Part IV. It has been marked for the printers, but apparently it was the carbons that were used for setting up.

Part VII

The file comprises a final manuscript draft of Part VII 'The five unmistakable marks' numbered 234-7, 240-6, 250-9, 261-3, 265-7, 270-280, 280 a-d, 281 by David Jones. The file includes a few sketches of women by David Jones, on page 252 and 265. Page 281 is signed 'at Pigotts Aug 18 1932'.
