Ballad and fragments

The file comprises three manuscript items, not in David Jones's hand, comprising a fragment of Latin prose (possibly an extract from the vita of a saint), a ballad 'The Unquiret [sic] Grave' (see F. J. Child, The English and Scottish Popular Ballad, part III (Cambridge, Mass., 1885), pp. 234-8) and what appear to be notes for a lecture entitled 'David Jones, Himself at the Cave-Mouth (cf. William Blisset, 'David Jones : Himself at the Cave-Mouth', University of Toronto Quarterly, vol. XXXVI (1966-7), pp. 259-273).

The file comprises miscellaneous papers and fragments, including 'The slugs weekly' by René Hague and W. Tegetmeier, 17th July 1960, a pamphlet on Dr Gregorio Maranon, typescript copies of poems, political candidates opinion on Catholic matters, 1950, and a BBC 'Sound News' typescript, 1957.

Emblems, Eric Gill

The file comprises Emblems by Eric Gill, a volume of six wood engravings selected from twelve illustrations made for The Devil's Devices or Control versus Service by Douglas Pepler, 1915. Thirty three copies of this, the second edition, were printed at Ditchling, February 1916. The volume is inscribed by David Jones 'from Eric Gill and Hilary Pepler (the printer of this work) circa 1921, Ditchling common, Sussex'. It has been numbered 'No. 3 Eric Gill'.

R. Kirby, and 'Another Damned Scotsman' by Burns Singer.

The file includes ten pamphlets, including The Anglo-Welsh Review, Vol. 9, No. 24; Agenda, July 1960, September-October 1961 (2 copies), February-March 1962, May-June 1962 and September-October 1962 (2 copies); Dock Leaves, Spring 1956, and a signed copy of 'Requiem for a Poet ' by Raymond Garlick, a Dock Leaves Pamphlet (No. 1), 1953. David Jones designed the lettering for the title page of Agenda, which was edited by William Cookson.

The file comprises carbon typescript copies of the 'Old Quarry MS A' pages 1-103 (with gaps), 'The Old Quarry. Two' pages 1-33, and two copies of 'The Old Quarry : I' pages 2-22, with also notes by René Hague.

Catholic Mass in Bangor

The file comprises manuscript drafts of a writing by David Jones arising from a report that the Catholics of Bangor, co. Caernarfon, had been preparing for the change from Latin to English of parts of Low Mass (1964). For earlier drafts of this writing see CF2/3. Folio 23 is dated 'Harrow, March 1966'.

The file comprises Harman Grisewood's copy of The Changing World, No.1, Summer 1947 which contains 'Art and Democracy' by David Jones with manuscript amendments by him; and also a proof copy of Harman Grisewood's review of The Anathemata which appeared in The Dublin Review, pages 80-85.

The file comprises forty letters from Saunders Lewis to David Jones, relating to David Jones' literature, broadcasts, and art exhibitions, and to Saunders Lewis's plays, Tynged yr Iaith and to his incarceration. There are two letters from Margaret, Saunders Lewis' wife (ff. 2-3), and a letter from Thomas Charles Edwards, 1937 (f. 1).
