Proofs No. 5

The file comprises another set of proofs No. 3, entitled 'Author's Corrections' stamped by the printers '7 April 1937'. It has been corrected by David Jones and returned to the press. Each section is signed 'DJ', with the date '14 April 1937' on Section 2, and with corrections by him in red ink and pencil. There are some comments by René Hague, mostly in blue crayon. Proof No. 7 was made from this.

Proofs No. 4

The file comprises another set of proofs No. 3 with the sections marked by David Jones 'my copy', and dated '17 Apr. 1937' by him on the second section. It has been stamped 'Marked proof' with the date '7 Apr. 1937' on page 91. It has been marked by David Jones in ink, pencil, red ink and red crayon, incorporating Faber and Faber's readers' corrections with his own. Not all corrections made in No. 5 appear in No. 4.

Proofs No. 3

The file comprises a complete set of proofs, page i-xxii, 1-225, revise of proof No. 2., entitled 'Faber and Faber's Readers Corrections'. The corrections marked in ink are made by Faber and Faber's reader, with further corrections marked by David Jones in pencil, red crayon and red ink,

Proofs No. 2

The file comprises another set of the same proofs and pages as No. 1 (pp. 1-9, 13-24) corrected by David Jones in pencil. From this (or its counterpart) corrections were made for Nos. 3-6.

Proofs No. 12

The file comprises two proofs of a title-page of In Parenthesis in which the imprint is London: Savage & Coke Ltd. MCMXXXVII. One has been corrected by David Jones and the other is the revise of the same.

Proofs No. 1

The file comprises page proofs of pp. 1-9, 13-24 only with corrections by David Jones in pencil and red crayon. The pencil corrections are repeated in No. 2, but the red corrections are not incorporated until No. 5, presumably made after the return of proofs No. 2 to the printers.

Proofs

The file contains a set of uncorrected incomplete proofs of 'The Wall' and 'The Hunt', dated by David Jones 'c. 1960 incorporating passages written earlier'.

Proofs

The file comprises page proofs of The Tribune's Visitation (London, 1969) with a covering letter dated 23 April 1969. These proofs have not been corrected.

Printer's copy

The file comprises the contents of Epoch and Artist prepared by the editor, Harman Grisewood, for the printer (typescript and printed copy, with manuscript annotations, and a number of items missing including the whole of section IV).

Press cuttings

The file comprises press cuttings mainly relating to In Parenthesis, The Anathemata and reviews of other publications and broadcasts by David Jones, and to his art exhibitions and work as an artist, with copies of some of his 'letters to the editor'. Some were collected by press cutting agencies such as Durrants and Woolgar and Roberts. It includes a copy of The Welsh Nationalist, July 1941 and miscellaneous items.

Prescriptions

The file includes prescriptions for medicine, 1925-1935, eye prescription, receipts for David Jones' subscriptions to St Andrew's Hospital Dollis Hill, 1964, and x-ray of a tooth, 1931.

Preface, typescript

The file comprises miscellaneous typescript material, including two pages of the author's preface to Epoch and Artist, an English translation of the Latin hymn 'Vexilla Regis', two essays concerning Christian theology (both incomplete) and a xerox copy of one page (numbered 9) of a writing concerning The Anathemata.

Preface, manuscript

The file comprises a complete manuscript of David Jones' preface, with insertion, dated 26 August 1958 written in pencil, and a design for the dedication. Folio 3v has a pencil drawing of a young girl and a horse.

Preface and notes

The file comprises one fragment of one sheet of the preface to The Anathemata; a typescript sheet of comments on The Anathemata possibly by Saunders Lewis, and miscellaneous notes on The Anathemata manuscripts and typescripts prepared by Harman Grisewood for his catalogue, 1975-1976.

The file comprises a carbon copy of the final typescript of the Preface (LP3/5), pages 6-8 only, dated March 1st 1937. This draft includes some manuscript revisions by David Jones, which are repeated in the proofs.
