Comments on Parts I and VII

The file comprises a short typescript commentary on Parts I and VII of The Anathemata, possibly relating to LA5/10. The author's name is not noted. David Jones has written 'early version' and other comments on the typescript.

Notes and unnumbered pages

The file includes two manuscript maps of the trenches, (2 ff.) notes on Welsh pronounciation (1 f.), unnumbered pages with some text (2 ff.), page numbered 206 with some text (1 f.) and numbered pages with no text (2 ff.).

Part III

The file comprises a final manuscript draft of Part III, 'Starlight Order' numbered 57-68, 68-70, 72-90, 90a, 91-94, 94a, 95-97 by David Jones.

Part VII

The file comprises a final manuscript draft of Part VII 'The five unmistakable marks' numbered 234-7, 240-6, 250-9, 261-3, 265-7, 270-280, 280 a-d, 281 by David Jones. The file includes a few sketches of women by David Jones, on page 252 and 265. Page 281 is signed 'at Pigotts Aug 18 1932'.

Title, map and dedication

The file comprises carbon typescripts of the title pages and dedication with some revision, 1937, a later typescript version of the dedication, a colourful manuscript map of the trenches, and an index to the typesetting signs used by David Jones. There is a note on f. 1 by René Hague referring to the numbering of the Notes.

The file comprises a typescript draft of the Preface, dated Christmas 1935 in the typescript, but with significant manuscript revisions by David Jones dated March 1st 1937.

Preface 3

The file comprises a typescript draft of the Preface, dated March 1st 1937, made from the carbon of the 1935 typescript (LP3/4). This draft includes some manuscript revisions by David Jones, and is marked off for printing and dated 24 March 1937 in another hand.

Proofs No. 5

The file comprises another set of proofs No. 3, entitled 'Author's Corrections' stamped by the printers '7 April 1937'. It has been corrected by David Jones and returned to the press. Each section is signed 'DJ', with the date '14 April 1937' on Section 2, and with corrections by him in red ink and pencil. There are some comments by René Hague, mostly in blue crayon. Proof No. 7 was made from this.

Proofs No. 7

The file comprises a complete set which is a revise of No. 5. It has been marked by David Jones in ink, pencil and red ink, and includes minor revisions of text. On p. 66 a line is added in the hand of René Hague, which is not in No. 5. This originates in No. 4 and was presumably added by David Jones after the return of No. 5 to the printers. All but four sections are marked by David Jones 'passed for press' at dates between 27 April and 8 May 1937 and 'printed' with stamped dates, presumably of printing, between 29 April and 7 May.

Receipts

The file comprises receipts for 'Minter' newsagents, 1944-1951, 'W H. Cullen' grocers, 1961-1969, and artists' supplies, 1944-1964.

Family funerals

The file includes papers relating to family funerals and burials, including the funeral of David Jones' mother Alice Ann Jones, 1937, Mr D Jones 1887, and Mary Ann Bradshaw 1889.

David Jones's art

The file comprises a typescript copy of an article by Eric Gill entitled 'David Jones', corrected and signed by the author. This article was originally published in Artwork, no. 23 (Autumn 1930), pp. 171-7, and was reprinted in a volume of essays by Eric Gill entitled In a Strange Land (London, 1944), pp. 63-9, and subsequently in Essays by Eric Gill (London, 1947), pp. 147-53.

The file comprises page proofs of part of an article by Nicolette Gray entitled 'David Jones', published in Signature, new series, no. 8 (1949), pp. 46-56.

The file comprises a typescript text of the first two chapters of David Blamires's study, David Jones: Artist and Writer (Manchester, 1971), together with a bibliography of works by David Jones and of critical studies of his work. A covering letter from the author is dated 30 Dec. 1966. A few marginal remarks have been added by David Jones to the text, together with a number of items to the bibliography.

Poems by Hague and Grisewood

The file comprises a manuscript copy of a poem entitled 'The weeping Queen', with a note in the same hand signed René [Hague] and dated 22 January 1930; a typescript copy of three poems by Harman Grisewood, dated 1931, one entitled 'Rigor'; a typescript copy of two poems, one entitled 'Esurientes' (in an envelope marked 'Harman's Poems'); and a typescript and manuscript copy of an untitled poem. The hand appears to be that of René Hague.
