Has been asked by Undeb Cymru Fydd to prepare a pamphlet entitled Cyngor Canol i Gymru [Central Council for Wales] ready for a meeting at the Llandudno Eisteddfod where Cledwyn [Hughes] and [Emlyn] Hooson will speak. Asks James Griffiths to write an introduction, as he is the most influential Welsh-speaking Welshman in the development of Socialism. Ref. to Labour's policy for Wales: 'I think that the new policy, with its basic acceptance of Welsh nationality, is a first class policy. It has enjoyed a very good Press. It is also my belief that since 1959 more and more people have come to realise that Plaid Cymru no longer has a 'potential'. So long as it had a potential, or appeared to have a potential, many thousands of Welshmen were prepared to give it their fullest support. But now that the potential is withering away we see around us a significant shift of opinion. Some former Plaid votes will return to the Liberals. But provided that too many checks and prohibitions are not thrown across the lines this should lead to a reconciliation of interest between the Welsh 'establishment' and Labour'. Welsh and English. Thanks for congratulations re his new post [as PR officer for the Labour Party in Wales]. Sees it as an 'opportunity not only to show to Welsh people what this Labour Government has done for Wales, but also as an opportunity to warn my fellow Welshmen of the pitfalls of narrow Nationalism. Is working on the history of the Labour Party's attitude to 'Home Rule' and asks James Griffiths for assistance.
