Life of Gildas; Annales Cambriae; &c,

  1. Vita sanctissimi atque doctissimi viri Gildae incipit ... A copy of the Life of Gildas, which is attributed to Caradog of Llancarvan (ff. 1-5 verso); 2. Incipiunt Chronica Venerabilis Bedae ... A copy of a version of the Annales Cambriae, which seems to correspond with MS C of Ab Ithell's edition in the Rolls Series [see Annales Cambriae (A.D. 444-1288). ed. by J. Williams ab Ithel, M.A. (London, 1860)]. There are only a few extracts from the beginning of the MS, until references to Britain become frequent (ff. 8-23); 3. Annales Cambriae ignoti Authoris. This seems to agree with MS B of the Rolls edition, while omitting the introductory material; the first entry is: 'Anno mortalitas magna fuit in Britannia, pro qua Cadwallader filius Catwallauni in minorem Britanniam aufugit' (see Rolls edition, p. 8). The editor on p. 109 states that in MS B opposite the last entry are the words 'non iven pe'; these are here extended to 'Non inveni plus' (ff. 25-37 verso).
Also included are a single leaf containing entries for several years between 1116 and 1287 (f. 24 recto-verso); a leaf containing entries for several years between 1147 and 1298, the source being indicated by a note: 'Huc usque ex Libro vocato Doomesday reservato penes Rememoratorum Dominae Reginae in Scaccario Westmonasteri' (f. 38 recto-verso), and a page containing entries from the reign of Edelric son of Edgar to that of William Rufus (f. 39). The old vellum covers are part of a document in Latin whose contents are currently obscured following conservation (ff. 40-41).
