Draft letter from Mrs Jane James to the Rt Hon. C. Yorke, reminding him that she had the previous year urged the promotion of her son, Horatio. She reminds him also that her husband, Lt John James, who served in the navy for 33 years, had died in 1790 and left her with seven children, one of whom had since died. Horatio was the only child in the navy, the other son [John Jones] was mate in the East India Service, and the other children were girls; Horatio, who had served only on the Jason and the Ethalion, was presently on the Brazil station with Rear Admiral Courcy.

Letter from Francis Ommaney to Mrs James. He tells her that Horatio has passed his lieutenant's exam, and that he is on board the Donegal with Captain Malcolm. He suggests that Horatio should follow his friend, Captain Cochrane, to the West Indies and that Mrs James addresses a memorial to Mr Yorke. He thanks Mrs James for the turkey and is sorry to hear that his uncle Ommaney is on his death-bed.

Sends Horatio a £10 bill; says there is little chance of promotion and that the 'Admiralty folks do not admit there will be a General One on the Coronation'; thanks Horatio for his congratulations on Ommaney's election success and extends regards to his family.

Letter, from H. Carter, Maruval, Trinidad to HJ, HMS Eden, care of Messrs Cavan, Barbados. He says that he resigned as Secretary to the Governor's Tribunals on account of his health and that Sir Ralph had therefore employed him to explore the interior of the island. He asks to be remembered should Horatio meet any of the Antelope's company for they were excellent fellows. Mentions the cocoa and coffee plantations and wishes to see Horatio again.
