'The serious state of our exchequer' of the North Wales Liberal Federation. Begs John Herbert Lewis 'to give a very little time longer for the development of the Political Organization of Wales'. The Federation may well strike out in new directions.
Will attend the meetings at Rhyl. The agricultural depression and the farmers' evidence for the Royal Commission. SS's stake in the Lancashire cotton spinning industry. Is critical of 'the appreciation of gold caused by the widespread demonetisation of silver'. Outlines the problem facing farmers - 'our Liberal leaders are blind on the subject'. A fund is needed to help farmers to prepare evidence for the Commission.
Congratulations on success of John Herbert Lewis's maiden speech, ' a model one of terseness and vigour'. All good wishes for future career - '...You are taking part in righting the injustice and wrongs of past generations, and especially of the Nonconformists of Wales. It is a noble work, worthy of the ambition of the best sons of Wales.' Would like Dr David Edwards to qualify and become a magistrate.
Thanks for congratulations on adoption as Liberal prospective parliamentary candidate for Flintshire. Anticipates victory in the election. Was at first reluctant to stand but is now determined to win back the seat. Plans to go to Warsaw to the International Law Association Conference.
Thanks for donation to the library. Has received a favourable account of John Herbert Lewis's health from Dr Jones Parry. The school re-opened a fortnight ago with 30 pupils. One former pupil has been awarded the Peace Scholarship on entering Aberystwyth; gives an account of his career, which is proof of the value of adult schools. Welsh.
Christmas greetings from an old servant. John Herbert Lewis, 'by being trustworthy and honourable in both public and private life', has earned widespread respect. Has just read Dr Jacks's Constructive Citizenship.
Had hoped to visit John Herbert Lewis by now. When he retires none of the MPs from 1906 will be left in the Commons except for Lloyd George. 'The Party now meets in his room, & you will appreciate the irony of the situation when I say that the last meeting I attended consisted of Mr Lloyd George, Mr Hopkin Morris & myself!' JB hopes to return to the House as Member for Battersea.
Thanks for letter and telegram of congratulations. 'I am keenly sensible of your part in bringing this about. Again & again accept my heartfelt thanks'. Is coming to London today.
Thanks for congratulations on election victory. The campaign in Anglesey was very long, but it gave her an opportunity of 'overcoming the prejudice of the farmers against a woman candidate ... a formidable obstacle'. There was a 'rather unpleasant incident in the adoption meeting', and rumours of an independent candidate.
Thanks for letter of congratulation, particularly welcome from 'one who has occupied this office, to which I am now appointed, for seven years'. Will call on John Herbert Lewis one day.
Thanks for messages of encouragement and congratulation. Regards John Herbert Lewis as 'a very old & valued friend of Father's'. The campaign proved to be 'rather strenuous for a beginner'.
Thanks for letter. Is distressed to learn of John Herbert Lewis's accident and its consequences. Always recalls John Herbert Lewis with regard and respect. His wife is suffering from the effects of a carriage accident ten years ago.
