Lewis and Ann MC Kevern, 29 Dodds Drive, Connahs Quay. Was sorry to read of Huw T. Edwards's imminent departure. 'The Labour Party will never be able to repay you for all you have done in Flintshire'. Realises, however, that Huw T. Edwards's decision is based on his desire to render further service to Wales. Is grateful to Huw T. Edwards for his personal kindness, and would be very happy to assist Huw T. Edwards in the future.

D. J. Thomas, Clwyd Villa, Cwm Road, Dyserth, Flintshire. Extends a warm welcome to Huw T. Edwards to Plaid Cymru. The writer is a member of the party's executive committee and of its county committee. They wish to congratulate him on his resolution and on his statement. They will be a very substantial boost to the movement for the freedom of Wales. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will soon become one of the most prominent leaders of the movement. Trusts, too, that Huw T. Edwards will support the county campaign. The candidature of E. N. Williams, who is standing for the first time for Plaid Cymru in East Flintshire, deserves to be warmly supported. The writer is about to depart for Scotland for two weeks' holiday, and the District Committee will launch into the election campaign on his return. The writer is looking forward to working alongside Huw T. Edwards. Welsh.

Michael Elliott, 9 Allt-yr-ynn Road, Newport, Monmouthshire. Congratulations on Huw T. Edwards's 'forthright protest' against 'the stagnant policy of the Labour and Conservative parties with regard to any measure of self-government for Wales'. Considers the idea of a Parliament for Wales to be audacious and sure to appeal to many of the Welsh people.

W. Hugh Jones, solicitor, Clerk of the Flintshire County Council, County Buildings, Mold. Thanks for Huw T. Edwards's letter of 11 August giving notice of his resignation from the County Council. Realises that this decision has not been an easy one for Huw T. Edwards, and that his departure will leave a great void on the Council. He will, of course, convey Huw T. Edwards's thanks to the council staff. The writer has always felt very proud of Huw T. Edwards's association with the county of Flintshire. Knows that Huw T. Edwards will serve the Welsh nation well in future.

Cassie Davies, Cwm Tudur, Tregaron. Had meant to write to Huw T. Edwards sooner immediately following the exciting news at the Eisteddfod. Admires Huw T. Edwards's action greatly and his plans for the future. A leader of Huw T. Edwards's extensive experience of Welsh public life will strengthen and give direction to the campaign for a parliament on Welsh soil. Huw T. Edwards's assistance is sorely needed, and his action has given them new heart and renewed hope. Although Huw T. Edwards has done so much to look after the best interests of Wales from within the ranks of the Labour Party, she ventures to predict that Wales will lie more heavily in his debt in future than ever before. Welsh.

A. G. Moyle, 27 Park Avenue, East Saltney, Chester. Had expected to hear from Huw T. Edwards after the announcement in the press that he was severing his connections with the Labour Party. They will miss his guidance within the Labour Group, above all his ability to state a case. Realises that reaching this decision must have been 'a terrific mental battle' for Huw T. Edwards. Everything has changed so much since the time of the ILP and the old Labour movement in the days of the writer's youth. Is proud to think that it was a Labour government which was responsible for attempting to conquer the scourge of unemployment. But he does regret that capitalism seems to have been strengthened rather than weakened.

G. W. Roberts, Bodorwel, Pwllheli. Has been following the news in the Daily Post. Appreciates that Huw T. Edwards must have engaged in much heart-searching, and admires his courage and honesty of purpose. Is very sorry that Huw T. Edwards has resigned from Flintshire County Council and the Education Committee. He will be sorely missed by the writer and the other officials. Thanks for his help to the writer and the Health Department, and to the writer's efforts to raise the level of public health.

Thomas Waterhouse, Highfield, Holywell, North Wales. Huw T. Edwards's resignation from Flintshire County Council and his other public offices in North Wales has come as a great shock to all his friends in the county and throughout Wales. Cannot understands why he has taken this dramatic step. They have always regarded Huw T. Edwards as a 'man of vision', but he is now becoming almost a visionary. Huw T. Edwards was appointed to the chair of the Education Committee on his personal merit and because of his forty years service as a member of Flintshire County Council. Appreciates Huw T. Edwards's kindness to the writer and to members of his family.

John [ ], 10 Rawlings Street, Chelsea, London SW3. Has just torn up a long letter which he had written to be sent to Huw T. Edwards; he prefers to tell him these matters. Is very unhappy about some depressing news which will be made official soon. Is contemplating saying, 'To hell with it all'. Very much regrets his inability to send Huw T. Edwards the information which he requires. Has applauded Huw T. Edwards's action in resigning from the Labour Party - '... All of us who know you can well understand you losing faith in a Party that's lost its own faith'. Is less sure about Huw T. Edwards's move to join Plaid Cymru. It would perhaps be more beneficial for him to exercise influence outside the political parties. 'Your association with the Blaid may well frighten off many who, although very keen to serve the Welsh cause, are not too keen on the ''two-facedness'' of the Blaid'.

Sidney Elmitt, Flintshire County Treasurer, County Buildings, PO Box 2, Mold. He has been on a sabbatical holiday, and it was a 'bombshell' to return and learn of Huw T. Edwards's activities in the meantime. Very much regrets Huw T. Edwards's resignation from the County Council; his experience and wisdom have been a great comfort during the last year. The staff of the Treasurer's Department would undoubtedly wish to be associated with these sentiments.

Gwilym M. Pritchard, 11 Queens Terrace, Llanllechid, Bangor. Welcomes Huw T. Edwards to Plaid Cymru. The writer is the President of the Llanllechid branch of Plaid Cymru. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards will be given strength to serve Wales in the future as he has done in the past. The branch would like him to address one of its meetings at the end of September if he is agreeable. Welsh.

T. H. P[arry]-w[illiams], Wern, North Road, Aberystwyth. Has received the englyn. Thanks for the letter The programme Pnawn Da Blant is coming to an end. Finds the Manchester idea quite appealing, and is most grateful to Huw T. Edwards for taking an interest in the possibility. Huw T. Edwards is still a matter for discussion. They both send him their best wishes, and would make him welcome at any time. Welsh.

[T.] Mervyn [Jones], Wales Gas Board, 2 Windsor Place, Cardiff. Does not see that Huw T. Edwards's decision to change his political allegiance should in any way affect his membership of the Wales Gas Board. But the Minister, of course, reserves the right to decide in these matters, and the writer will make informal enquiries to decide whether Huw T. Edwards should send a similar letter direct to the Minister. Feels that Huw T. Edwards's letter typifies his 'open-hearted honesty'. For this reason, a letter to the Minister on similar lines would be appropriate.

Alun [Oldfield Davies], Broadcasting House, 38-40 Park Place, Cardiff. Discusses the David Lloyd case. The Legal Aid Society did advise against taking action in the first place, and the BBC Counsel did suggest to DL's Counsel during the trial that the case might be withdrawn. Moreover, the BBC is obliged to contest cases where it appears evident that the BBC was not responsible. Realises that the sum which DL is now obliged to pay must be a crippling financial demand, but it is unlikely that the BBC will be prepared to waive its claim. Advises Huw T. Edwards to contact Lord Macdonald (who has been most helpful to DL) before beginning a National Testimonial.

[Sir Clayton Russon], Glan-y-Mawddach, near Barmouth, Merioneth. Hopes that Huw T. Edwards is fit and well. Was glad to read that Huw T. Edwards believed that the Council for Wales seemed a good team; hopes that this is indeed so, and that their work reflects this. Considers that the next few years will be a very testing time for the Council, and its future will be in serious doubt unless it achieves something positive during this period. The writer is the only member of the present Council who has served continuously since its inception in 1949, and he has consequently been nominated as a candidate for the chairmanship. But is reluctant to allow his name to go forward because of his close friendship with Huw T. Edwards and the Minister [?Henry Brooke]. Considers that Professor R. I. Aaron would be acceptable to all shades of opinion, and has thus sponsored his nomination. But would much appreciate hearing Huw T. Edwards's views in private. The writer knows that his friends may be disappointed with his decision, but he is confident that it is the right one for Wales. Discusses Huw T. Edwards's income tax. Agrees that there is no point in proceeding with the Gwerin Trust. In order to save some money, suggests that the Trust might be converted to fit the Dragon Theatre project in Barmouth. Best wishes for 1960. 'Private'.

Emrys [O.] Roberts, Pennant, Howard Drive, Hale, Cheshire. The writer's complaint against Y Faner is that it is an organ of propaganda, and that it conducts the propaganda in a way that is either bitter or boring. Almost every week the front page or the middle pages are jam-packed with the history of Plaid Cymru and its leaders. The writer has not much interest in reading it. His opinion is not of any importance, but he has always believed in voicing openly his views on public institutions. It was not fair to cease taking Y Faner without giving his reasons. But, after reading Huw T. Edwards's letter (in spite of their differences of opinion), he is tempted to give the paper another chance. His political opinions have not changed one iot; he remains a Welsh Radical with no reason to break away from the Liberal Party, although he has no great inclination to become involved in its affairs. He is very anxious to live and work in Wales, and is prepared to make a sacrifice to that end, but he sees no opportunity. This feeling is shared by hundreds of others. The problem is that success is so easily achieved in the English commercial world. That world satisfies the mental faculties, but not one's deepest aspirations. Welsh.
