Coal Cutters and Conveyors Committee,

Material relating to the work of the Coal Cutters and Conveyors Committee, which was appointed by the Owners' representatives of the Conciliation Board to negotiate price lists used for the payment of workmen on the introduction of machine mining, to investigate the question of these price lists at individual collieries, and to advise members in their negotiations for new price lists. Material comprises minutes of meetings and résumés of cases prepared for the meetings.

Joint Sliding Scale Committee,

Material related to the work of the Joint Sliding Scale Committee, comprising minute books of meetings and conferences, auditor's reports, and wage awards. File BT4/1/3 contains accounts of meetings of the owners' represenatatives on the Sliding Scale Committee, and also an account of the meetings which led to the establishment of a sliding scale in 1875. The remaining minute books contain details of the negotiations leading to the establishment of various Sliding Scales, together with summaries of the discussions of routine business and matters in dispute affecting the coalfield as a whole, and records of sub-committee reports. A few termination notices and some news cuttings have been inserted among the minutes.

Material comprises press cuttings relating to specific subjects, including the explosions at Penygraig Collieries, the appearance of pit ponies at horse shows and parades, and cuttings concerning United Kingdom and foreign trade statistics on coal output, imports, and exports.

South Wales and Monmouthshire Safety in Mines Research Committee,

Material relating to the Safety in Mines Research Committee, a Joint Committee representing the Safety in Mines Research Board, colliery owners, mining engineers, workmen, H.M. Inspector of Mines, and colliery managers. The committee was concerned with the supervision and direction of the research undertaken in the district, and the results achieved; investigations into accidents caused by roof falls; subsidence; the use of steel supports and protective equipment; and the appointment of investigators. Material comprises mainly minutes and reports, with some accompanying related letters, meeting notices and circulars.

Pneumoconiosis Joint Sub-Committee,

Minutes and related correspondence and reports of the Pnuemoconiosis Joint Sub-Committee. This committee, which represented the Ministry of Fuel and Power, Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners and colliery workmen, was set up by the District Safety Board to examine and co-ordinate measures for dust suppression in coal mines.

Physical and chemical survey of the national coal resources,

Fuel research reports produced by the staff of the Coal Survey Laboratory at the School of Mines, Treforest. Research work centered on surveying the Nine Feet Seam in the South Wales coalfield through examination and sampling. The work of the Coal Survey Laboratory was directed by the Local Coal Survey Committee (South Wales), set up under the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. Material consists primarily of analyses of samples taken from various seams worked in South Wales collieries, and often includes sketch maps of sample locations, a report on the fusion point of coal ash, and related letters and correspondence. Reports on other related topics, such as hydrogenation of South Wales coals, spontaneous combustion, and the breakage of coals are also included.

Mines inspectors reports,

Annual reports of H.M. Inspectors of Mines on coal mines across England, Scotland, and Wales. They are arranged by district and generally contain statistics and reports on fatal accidents; general observations on ventilation and methods of working at the mines; details of equipment used; a list of collieries in the district and their location and owner; and may contain comments and observations on the living conditions of the miners. Districts covered by the reports include the counties of Durham, Northumberland, Cumberland, the mining districts of Scotland, Staffordshire, Shropshire, Worcestershire, Lancashire, Cheshire, North Wales, Yorkshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, Warwickshire, and South England and Wales.

Abstract tables compiled in the Statistical Office of the Board of Trade showing quantities of foreign and colonial merchandise imported, exported, and retained for consumption in the UK; quantities and declared value of British and Irish produce and manufactured goods exported from the UK; trade of the UK; shipping employed in the trade of the UK; detailed statement of the trade at each port or place in the UK, as well as the quantities and value of imports in the same ports.

Mineral statistics for the United Kingdom,

Mineral statistics for the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland prepared by H.M.'s Inspectors of Mines. The reports and statistics show the average value at the mine and open-cast works; the distribution of certain of the minerals; the production of the blast furnaces; the quantity of coal consumed in making pig iron; the output and value of minerals, persons employed in mines and quarries, and the number of fatal and non-fatal accidents in mines. During the period 1897-1912, part vi of the statistics relate to British colonies and foreign countries.

Coal export,

Statistics relating mainly to the export of coal from ports in the United Kingdom to foreign destinations, although figures for coastwise shipments from South Wales ports to other UK ports such as London, Liverpool, Plymouth and Southampton may also be found. The figures mostly concern quantities, value, declared prices, and classes of coal exported.

Colliery disputes and strikes,

Material comprises letters, telegrams, newspaper cuttings, statistics, etc., dealing with disputes and strikes at collieries throughout South Wales, together with some details of indemnities paid by the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association (MSWCOA) to members involved. Also contains reports of investigations of the disputes by representatives of the MSWCOA and other individuals.

Minutes of meetings,

Minutes of meetings of the Board of Conciliation for the Coal Trade of Monmouthshire and South Wales. Included in the minutes are accounts of disputes and strikes at various collieries brought to the attention of the Board, and reports of sub-committees appointed to investigate such matters and any final settlements reached. The minutes also include discussions of the Board regarding changes in the general wage rate in the coalfield and decisions of independent chairmen, as well as discussions on other matters affecting the entire coalfield, such as the dates and durations of holidays, concessionary coal supplies, the non-union question, deputations, the settlements of price lists for specific coal seams, and the Eight Hours Act. Also included are meeting minutes and recommendations and resolutions of the Owners' representatives on the Conciliation Board to the Coal Owners Association on a wide range of matters concerning the mining industry in South Wales.

Minutes of proceedings,

Transcripts of joint meetings of the Craftsmen's Conciliation Board, and also of the Craftsmen's Joint Board, between representatives of the Coal Owners Association and representatives of the workmen to discuss problems. The workmen were represented by groups under several different names, including the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Enginemen, Stokers and Craftsmen's Association; the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Enginemen, Boilermen and Craftsmen's Association; or the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Enginemen, Stokers and Craftsmen's Union (Enginemen's Wages Committee). The minutes record negotiations of wage agreements and their interpretation and application; discussions and decisions on individual cases in dispute, mainly involving wages and conditions of work; and also the refusal of some companies to allow their winding enginemen to sign an agreement.

Verbatim transcripts of meetings of the Windingmen's Conciliation Board, which included representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Coal Owners Association and representatives of the Monmouthshire and South Wales Colliery Winding Enginemen's Association. Matters discussed include standard wage rates, time agreements, holiday pay, the revision of agreements, work stoppages, the termination of contracts, trade depression and specific issues between management and workmen at numerous individual collieries.
