Previously I had received a copy of the sanad, along with a letter from the Nawab Vazir for you. This was sent to you. After this we were waiting for the original documents to arrive. These arrived here on 27th Shawwal, reg.yr. 5. According to these you have been appointed to the post of commander of six thousand soldiers and five thousand horsemen and have been awarded the titles of Zubdat al-Mulk, Nasir al-Daulah, Sabitjang Bahadur. These documents carrying the seals of Bakhshi al-mumalik and state officials were, on the advice of His Majesty. delivered to the Kothi of Jagat Seth Mihtab Rai and Maharajah Saropchand Sahib. On 28th inst. these two gentlemen sent a message to me to go there and inspect these documents so that we could decide upon the presentation of these documents to you. In order to do so I went to the mansion of the above mentioned seths on the morning of 29th inst., inspected the documents, congratulated each other and offered my thanks to Almighty for bestowing these honours on you. These are now enclosed, along with a covering letter from the Seth Sahib. I hope you will let us know when you have received and inspected these documents. The Seth brothers have worked hard for you at the royal court and can render great services to your. I hope you will be able to write to them and thank them for their services. -- Meanwhile, Munshi Keda Mal, and Jagat Seth's vakil, Ranjit Rai, were thrown out of Murshidabad. Keda Mal is now imprisoned in Jahangirnagar. I had sent you earlier an application to send him to Benares. Ranjit Rai had already left for Benares and had reached Shankar Gali. Two or three days ago we received news at Murshidabad that Mir Muhammad Taqi Bahadur called on him to discuss procurement of grains and dismissed him after some discussion. As soon as he had left the main door two or three hundred gunmen and soldiers attacked them and started fighting. During this fight Ranjit Rai was killed and a few other men from both sides also lost their lives or were injured. Jagat Seth and Mihtab Rai have sent a letter of complaint to me to do justice. I replied to them that I had received no news of this incident. I have sent four people to investigate this matter. -- Enclosed is a paper, plain, with illuminated gold borders and an illuminated cloud on the top, with the inscription Huva al-Aziz.

I had arrived here as a representative of Maharajah Januji Sahib Bahadur to discuss with you some outstanding issues between our states, but when I reached here I came to know that you had already left for Calcutta. Because of this I went to see Maharajah Shitab Rae and asked him to arrange a meeting with Navab Muin al-Daulah Bahadur as soon as possible. When I went to see the Navab I told him about the letter I had brought for you; he asked me to send this letter to you and he asked me to stay here until a reply to this letter is received from you. Initially I did not agree to this proposal but the Navab was able to persuade me to send this letter to you. He is also sending his vakil to Deccan to negotiate with Maharajah Januji. I was hoping to accompany this vakil but cannot do so until I receive a reply to my letter. I am sure the Navab Sahib and the Maharajah must have sent you further details about the purpose of my visit.

After taking your leave I reached Benares. Some of your messengers who had come this way to look for Mir Zain al-Abidin had informed that he was staying in Benares so that he could prevent me, Sukha Ram Pandit, from coming and see you. Although I had sent him a message asking him not to travel as the roads were not safe and elephants and horses belonging to Odepuri Gosain who were travelling in this area were taken away from him by Rajah Ajit Singh. However, the aforesaid Mir did not believe this and moved on. Meanwhile, I went to the river bank/Ghat and heard that Rajah Vije Singh of Maulaganj had confiscated all the belongings of Mir and had asked him to pay five thousand rupees if he wanted them back. He, with great difficulty, managed to provide only one thousand rupees and a horse. Later two guards belonging to Rajah Ajit Singh came there and took him into custody. We do not know what happened next and on what terms he was released. From here he is now travelling via Allahabad and will soon come to see you. -- Enclosure: Copy of the above letter.

You had written to me asking me to allow the samples of cloths belonging to the [East India]Company to be sent to the Nawab Sahib. As a matter of fact there was no permit with these cloths and it was being sent under the name of Ami Chand. As your instructions were that I should not allow any merchandise to be moved from here without the permit of the Company I had stopped the delivery of those cloths. Now that I have received your letter, I will make an exception to this rule but I hope that they will not do this again.

Since they day you arrived at Murshdabad the chief of traders has, two or three times, sent me an invitation but because of my physical condition I have not been able to avail this oppurtunity and travel to Murshidabad at such a short notice. I am at present feeling very weak and hope that by the time you visit Murshidabad again I will have recovered from my illness and be able to pay my respects.

I have already conveyed to you details of my sad circumstances. Today, 15th Katak (i.e. November 6th?) the Chothi Thakurani, that is the wife of the Maharajah Sahib accompanied the funeral out of the palace walls and brought it to a designated place at the banks of Ganges. I am also at present staying at the same place. I am planning to proceed to Murshidabad from here.

I am very pleased with the hard work and sincerity you have served me. Agha Yunus Beg and Biharvar Beg have given me a detailed report on their work. This was conveyed to Aqdas-I A'la and later passed on to the Prince.
