A consignment of fifty maunds of raw silk was received here from the English Company. When I opened the promissory note, I found it was dated the month of Dhu al-Hijjah. As six-months have passed since this promissory note was issued I am returning this to you with this letter. Fifty maunds of raw silk are being sent for the English Company. It is instructed that the above-mentioned officers should not inspect or delay this consignment.

Janab-i Ali Mutaali [the Nawab] left Calcutta on 20 Dhu al-Hijjah and on twenty-first when three and half ghari of the day remained he entered the fort of Hoogli. On the 22nd he embarked on a boat and went towards Mursidabad. On the same day when six ghari of the day had passed he asked Amir Beg Khan and myself to join the forces of Rajah Ram Singh at the cantonment of Madnipore and Jalesar. The document of travel was affixed with an official stamp by the staff of Muhammad Hadi Khan. I will bring this document when I come to see you. I pray that Rajah Ram Singh may prosper under you as he regards his commitment to the services of the Company above everything else.

I am delighted to have received your letter and the news that you have arrived back at Murshidabad and that the Rajah of Tanjore has achieved a great victory over the French with the help of [East India] Company forces. Please accept my congratulation on this great victory.

Refers to his concern to receive news and mentions hope to arrive after 1st Muharram [i.e. 4 September 1758].

I have received the schedules from the two Nawabs and subsequently I have submitted details of my previous and present accounts to Mr Hastings and the other Nawab Sahib. He has now collected all revenues and reached Anbuh on the 10th of Bhadun. Because of the illness of my grandmother I had to delay my arrival there. I therefore sent Divan Ramchand and his assistants to Burdwan to arrange for the payments of wages of the soldiers and write to me. However, Rajah Rajbalab Sahib did not have the fifty thousand rupees he was required to pay. He has referred the matter to Murshidabad saying that he used to pay two Lac rupees to the two persons every year. The two officials have also written their statements and have sent them to Murshidabad. I would like to bring to your notice that Raja Ram Singh came with his associates to see me and complained that I do not allow my army to provide protection to my Hindu subjects. I replied that I do not consider myself separate from the army of Mir Sulaiman Sahib. At this he asked me to provide him with a contingent of two hundred cavalry and five hundred musketeers. I did not agree to this. He will no doubt write to you complaining. I will request that until I come to see you and explain the matter you delay any answer to that request. Congratulation on your appointment as the head of Calcutta Council. Previously I had sent a letter along with a reply of Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik to your letter through Mr Amyatt/Amhurst Sahib. I am concerned that I have not received a reply as yet. Now I have received another letter, dated 14th Dhu al-Hijjah, from the capital in which Daler Singh Bahadur has reminded that he has, on the assurances given to him by me, strengthened the friendship/ sar-rishtah-yi bandagi at the courts of Asamanjah and Nawab Vazir al-Mumalik. Therefore, when the request of the French Officer Monsieur Bhonse/ Thonse arrived at the court through the sons of the late Asafjah he did not reply. Now Rajah Sahib has strongly reminded me that you should send your reply, along with the letters of Rajah Thakur Mall Bahadur, as soon as possible. I have already written to you that Raja Ram Prashad and business agent/gumashtah of Jagat Seth were very annoyed when they did not receive replies to their letters promptly. -- Enclosure 1: It has been reported from the capital that after the arrival of the Marhatta army Ahmad Shah Abdali went back to Kabul and died there. Now Vazir al-Mumalik has changed his mind and has diverted his attention towards Bengal. He is waiting for the Prince [Ali Gauhar] to start some mischief. -- Enclosure 2: Please convey my salam to Mr Watts.

I hope you have already received my earlier letters. I am very anxious not have received any reply to my previous letters, - particularly after learning that the Janab-I Ali Mutaali [the Nawab] has been to Calcutta recently. As Maharajah Dullabha Ram will be arriving at Calcutta soon he will be able to brief you about the situation here. Meanwhile, I will appreciate if you could send me a reply to my letters as soon as possible. -- Enclosure : I am fully prepared to perform whatever service you wish me to undertake but justice demands that you write to me in detail so that I can follow your instructions. -- Another, contemporary summary translation of the contents is CC2/3, entry no. 100.

Received your letter, along with a copy of a letter from Maharajah Ram Narayan dated 26 Rajab, reg.yr. 6 [25 March 1759]. The petition addressed to the Nawab which you had sent me has been sent to the Nawab. Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/12, item no.445.

I have received several letters from Maharajah Ram Narayan describing the assault of the Prince and how his fortress withstood his attacks and how he was disappointed when he did not receive the help from you or me. If I were with you I would have made some suggestions to remedy the situation. Now whatever resistance he is offering he is doing because of your help. He should be offered whatever help he needs. Thank you very much for your letter asking me to arrange enough boats so that the army can cross the river safely. Boat owners had run away from here because of the threats of the enemy forces but I am now able to collect enough boats so that the army will be able to cross the river safely.

Thank you very much for your letter advising me to take care and to enforce the defences of the fort. I am prepared to sacrifice everything to safeguard your interests here and at the same time I am sure you are well aware of the sacrifices made by Rajah Ram Narayan also. With God's grace until now, i.e. 2 ghari passed, Saturday, 1 Sha'ban, reg.yr. 5, the fort is intact and I am ready with my commanders to face any assault. Hainga the camel rider has delivered your message. I spend all my energies and time to serve you and implement your orders. I hope that you will be able to pay us a visit soon after we have conquered the town of Bardairah. -- P.S. I have already sent details of the departure of the French and their arrival at Sehsram in the morning.
