It is advisable that instead of one stopover you make two or three, arrive at Shahabad at the same time so that we could meet there and discuss plans. After taking your leave I arrived at Moti Jharna. From here I took my leave from Nawab Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur on 19 Rajab, reg.yr. 5 and after crossing the river went to Shahabad and here I wrote to all officials. I am hoping to meet them in Monghyre and Bhagalpur. I am doing my best to carry out your instructions.

The Prince arrived at Jafar Khan's garden on 22 Rajab [21 March 1759]. A soldier with gun protects the Kothi where the Prince is staying. The Prince has full confidence in him and he fulfils all his requirements. -- Please pay six rupees as expenses to Bhiku Jamadar for bringing this news to you. Shankar Thakur and Nahar Singh would like to come and see you.

I have already sent one report about the situation here for which I have received your reply in which you asked me to write a detailed report about the King's army. The army of the Prince is starving. He has asked Nawab Jafar Ali Khan for help but has not received any joy from his reply. Meanwhile Siraj al-Daulah arrived with a large army but it was routed by him [Nawab Jafar Ali Khan?] in the first engagement. The Prince has run away from the clutches of the Vazir al-Mumalik [Nawab of Oudh] and the Nawab Vazir has sent a letter to Nawab Jafar Ali Khan asking him either to kill the Prince or to take him as a prisoner. This letter fell into the hands of the guards of the Prince who tore it into pieces. Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/11, item no.417 where Rang Lal is described as a harkarah [messenger] in the English service in the 'Shahzadah's Camp'.

Thank you for your letter asking me to write a letter to Nand Kumar to enquire about Abd al-Rahim Khan's visit to the Prince with a petition and which Nand Kumar had the chance to see. I suggest that I do not write this letter to him but you yourself send him a letter so that he pursues this task with sincerity. I have received today, 28 Rajab, a letter from Maharajah Ram Narayan dated 25th instant. I am enclosing a copy of this letter for your information. I am thankful to God that the Prince has been defeated and large numbers of his officers and soldiers have been killed and injured. After his defeat the Prince abandoned the garden of Jafar Khan and sought protection in Baqipore. This is very good news and we should be thankful to Almighty for this success. A copy of the letter from Maharajah Ram Narayan and his nazur is enclosed with this letter. -- Enclosure 1: Letter from Rajah Ram Narayan to Nasir al-Mulk Bahadur. Copy of a letter received from Maharajah Ram Narayan written on Sunday, one pihr of the day had passed, 25 Rajab. The battle is raging in full swing and nearly five hundred men of the Rohila and Sadat-I Barha regiments have been killed and an equal numbers have been injured. In addition, with your blessing, my forces are still going strong. -- P.S. Today the Prince got scared and abandoned Bagh-I Ja’far Khan and has now escaped to Baqipore. We have achieved a great victory. I would appreciate if you could send your detachment as soon as possible. -- Enclosure 2: Copy of Akhbar-I Azimabad, dated 25 Rajab, San 6 [24 March, [1759], San 6]. Today, in the morning he [the Prince?] left in a palanquin and went outside. Hidayat Ali Khan, with his sons and Rajah Ram Nath brought their secret reports; afterwards Bahadur Ali Khan brought his secret report. Then His Majesty interrogated them very closely. Two ghari had passed then he entered his tent and then after marching from Bagh Ja’far Khan came to Fath Bagh and encamped there. He was regularly sending his messengers to see his sardars at the defences. The tent of the Prince is situated next to Ranipore. -- Afterwards Rajah Ram Nath Rao went to see the butler Bahadur Ali Khan and other sardars and conveyed the orders of the King that they should look after the needs of the army. He gave one rupee each to Bahadur Ali Khan and the sepoys belonging to Hasano and Muhammad Quli Khan as reward and gave them some gifts. Up to now all fortifications are intact and the commanders are also present there. Another, contemporary translation of the letter and the first enclosure is CC2/11, item no. 438.

I have already sent you copies of the letters I had received from the Nawab Wazir as well from His Majesty the King. I have now received some other letters from the King and from the Nawab Vazir. Copies of these letters, attested by the Qazi, with his official seals, as well as a copy of a letter I wrote to the Prince are now enclosed for your information. If you consider it proper you may send a copy of this letter to Rif'at Pinah Abd al-Rahim Khan. The original documents may be sent to Amir Beg Khan so that he can examine them and return them through Abd al-Rahim Khan. Copies of these documents should also be sent to Rajah Ram Narayan and others. Enclosure 1: Letter from Shuja al-Mulk Bahadur - Mir Jafar to Prince Muhammad Hidayat Bakhsh, dated: 28 Rajab, San 5. -- Copy of a letter sent to the Prince on 28 Rajab, San 5. I hope you have seen copies of the letters I had received from His Majesty and the Nawab Vazir and which I had sent to you earlier. I have now received another shuqqah from His Majesty and a letter from the Nawab Vazir. I am sending copies of these letters attested by the Qazi for your information. I hope you and your advisers will be able to consider the contents of these letters and implement their recommendations. -- Enclosure 2: Letter to Navab Amir al-Hind [Amir al-Hind Umdat al-Mulk]s, Siraj al-Daulah Anvar al-Din Khan Bahadur Mansurjang Sipah Salar. -- I would like to bring to your notice that in your previous letter you informed me that the King has approved the grant of titles to your sons. Accordingly, I have ordered for the preparation of four documents as well as ceremonial robes, studded turban and a decorated ceremonial jacket. I am sending these in a sealed box to Lord Clive so that he can forward these for the King for approval. -- Enclosure 3: Letter from Vazir al-Mumalik to Mir Ja’far. Impression of Seal of Khadim al-Shara’ al-Mu’tasam Bi’allah al-Musta’an Qazi Zahid Muhammad Khan. -- We are delighted at the news that His Majesty has bestowed the viceroyalty of the Province of Bihar on his son, Prince Muhammad Hidayat Bakhsh, and has appointed you as his governor. We should be grateful to him for these honours. Meanwhile, wherever Prince Ali Gohar went to muster support in favour of his claims and against the wishes of His Majesty, he has failed to attract any followers for his cause. It is heartening to know that you have checked his advances and he has returned disappointed from all sides. His Majesty is very pleased with the services you have rendered. -- Enclosure 4: Letter from Alamgir 11 to Mir Jafar. Royal shuqqa dated 27 Rajab, San 4. -- We have bestowed the viceroyalty of Azimabad from Ali Gohar to our obedient son Muhammad Hidayat Bakhsh and the governorship to Ja’far Muhammad Khan Mahabatjang Bahadur. We have granted him our appointment orders. As Ali Gohar has acted against our will, therefore it is necessary that my faithful servant Mir Jafar should capture him and send him to us under the custody of a strong guard so that we could make him an example for others. -- Enclosure 5: Details of honours bestowed on the sons of Nawab [Siraj al-Daulah]. As a result, documents relating to their new status/posts have arrived from His Majesty. I have also received a decorated turban, a robe of honour, a crown and a waistcoat for the Nawab. I am sending these documents and accessories in a sealed box. I am also sending for your information a copy of the official letter I have received and a copy of the reply I have sent. While in the presence of His Majesty I mentioned that the Nawab often keeps a record of his requests. Therefore, all presents received for the Nawab from His Majesty are being sent to you. In order to send these items to the Nawab you may ask your officials to take appropriate steps. Enclosure 7: Yadasht:- Tafsil-i ataya kih az Huzur-i Aqdas va A’ala bara’e Navab Siraj al-Daulah Anvar al-Din Khan Bahadur [9 April, 1756] marhamat shud. -- Details of the gifts and grants bestowed on Nawab Siraj al-Daulah Anvar al-Din Khan by His Majesty the King Emperor. Details: A decorated ceremonial turban. A ceremonial jacket. A ceremonial gown decorated with pearls. A ceremonial head wear decorated with pearls. Received your letter, along with a copy of a letter from Maharajah Ram Narayan dated 26 Rajab, reg.yr. 6 [25 March 1759]. The petition addressed to the Nawab which you had sent me has been sent to the Nawab. Another, contemporary translation of the contents is CC2/12, item no.445.

I have received several letters from Maharajah Ram Narayan describing the assault of the Prince and how his fortress withstood his attacks and how he was disappointed when he did not receive the help from you or me. If I were with you I would have made some suggestions to remedy the situation. Now whatever resistance he is offering he is doing because of your help. He should be offered whatever help he needs. Thank you very much for your letter asking me to arrange enough boats so that the army can cross the river safely. Boat owners had run away from here because of the threats of the enemy forces but I am now able to collect enough boats so that the army will be able to cross the river safely.

Thank you very much for your letter advising me to take care and to enforce the defences of the fort. I am prepared to sacrifice everything to safeguard your interests here and at the same time I am sure you are well aware of the sacrifices made by Rajah Ram Narayan also. The fort is still standing strong and our valiant forces are ready to repulse any attack on them. A contemporary translation of the contents is CR2/12. item no. 465.

With God's grace until now, i.e. 2 ghari passed, Saturday, 1 Sha'ban, reg.yr. 5, the fort is intact and I am ready with my commanders to face any assault. Hainga the camel rider has delivered your message. I spend all my energies and time to serve you and implement your orders. I hope that you will be able to pay us a visit soon after we have conquered the town of Bardairah. -- P.S. I have already sent details of the departure of the French and their arrival at Sehsram in the morning. I received this information from Gulab Chand and sent it to Mr Tash/Taish through Mr Hainga, the camel rider. A contemporary translation of the contents is CR2/12. item no. 474.

After leaving Azimabad I arrived at Benares on the 3rd of Rabi al-Avval. I hope to stay here for a few days to do some shopping and then depart for Allahabad; I will send you full a report after seeing the King. -- Enclosure: -- This is to inform you that until the writing of this letter the person you had appointed to come from Monghyr and accompany me to see the King has not yet arrived at Benares. -- Meanwhile, please let me know if you require anything from here. As good quality tea is not available here I will appreciate if you could send me some.

Mubariz al-Mulk, Muin al-Daulah and Muzaffar Jang Bahadur came here and inspected the affairs of the Bihar province. Afterwards, the account books for 1173 Fasli were sent to Mr Sanks Bahadur Haibat Jang so that he could compare these with his own estimates and then send them over to you. Now we are preparing the accounts for 1174 Fasli and we will send you details of the instalments and collections in due time.
