Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to France and Switzerland (Tocqueville, Paris and Ouchy), 9 August-11 September 1861. It includes conversations with: Mdme. de Tocqueville; Beaumont; Ampere; Duvergier; Sir William Erle (1793-1880); Marochetti; Marquis Pallavicini; Dr James Alderson (1794-1882), et al. The discussions relate mainly to the political situation in France and Italy. There are also comments on Rome; social conditions in Normandy; the French Revolution; the class system in France; French literature; the political career of Tocqueville; the reign of Louis-Philippe; the American Civil War; Switzerland; legal matters; English and French art; and possible successors to Louis Napoleon.

Chevalier; Simon; Guizot; Corneluis de Witt; Kergorlay; Corcelle; ?Drouyn de l'Huys [?A.B.]; Duvergier d'Hauranne; Changarnier; Barrot; Francois-Adolphe Chambolle (1802- ); Louis-Leonard de Loménie (1818-78); Fenelon; Merimee; Marshall Randon; Cousin; Ampere; Mme. Mohl, et al. Discussions relate mainly to the political situation in Europe, with particular attention being paid to Franco-Austrian relations; the military and political state of Italy; Russia; Turkey; Greece; Spain; Egypt; Hungary; and the Eastern Question. There are also comments on Beaumont's biography of Tocqueville; religion; education; languages; agriculture; and the events in France of 1848-51.
