Description of Marienbad; complains of the sun. 'There seems a general feeling that the Whig ministry has done more, by its treatment of the Eastern Question, to consolidate Germany & to enable it to oppose the encroachments of France on one side & of Russia on the other, than had been effected during the last 20 years.' They approve of the budget but cannot understand how Peel can become minister if the Queen dislikes him.'. Headed notepaper (print of Marienbad).

Nassau William Senior, [?K.], to Lansdowne, [?Lansdowne House], to visit Bowood on the 20th; has got rid of fever by 'a profuse bleeding' but cold remains; comments on his Irish article; suggests an enquiry on 'the most dangerous of subjects' tenure. 'It seems to me that the Church question is theoretically easy but practically difficult. ? Copy.

Has received letter from the Archbishop [? Whately] urging him to see [?R. A.] Cross; will consult Home Secretary and write to Lord St. German.

News of Mrs Austin and of Mrs Grote who is very angry as having been represented by the London Review as proposing temporary marriages & is going to write to the newspapers to exculpate herself.'. Sends revised passage on Louis N[apoleon] 'softened & weakened'; [Sir William] Molesworth agrees with recipient's criticisms but believes it now 'unobjectionable'; comments on 'badness' of Louis Napoleon and need '... to separate ourselves from the mob of Eulogists, who have raised against us just indignation in France.' News of future movements.

'As far as 1 have power over the paper by Tocqueville in the London and Westminster [Review] (if I have any such power) I most willingly consent to its being made use of in the manner you propose.' Believes however that it will be superseded by 'L'ancien regime et la revolution.' Wishes to see Nassau William Senior's volumes of Tocqueville's conversations' and also his book on Education '... which I suppose is the separate report Chadwick told me of and I am glad it has dimensions of a book.' Asks recipient to send them to Blackheath Park. Gives address in Avignon.
