Re Oregon question; unwilling to give views on affair but sends 2 pamphlets (one by Sturgis). Displeased with 'unfriendliness' of 'liberal party in England' to USA Critical of reliance on Nootka Sound Convention; the proposal that the boundary should be the 49th parallel is reasonable as S. has said, but British govt have been influenced by fur companies who are afraid of losing £10,000 worth of beaver. Govt risks the peace of the world by binding itself to the decisions of its predecessors.

Edwin Chadwick, ?, to S., [? London],

Desires S. to thank Whately for circulating Chadwick's pamphlet in Ireland; pamphlet printed at own expense. '... I may escape with a penalty of thirty pounds for my patriotism. I shall in future strive to write for the reviews, & be paid instead of paying.' Provides statistical information about Irish workers, and comments on the prevalence of 'fever'.

It includes conversations with Walne; Lesseps; Edhem Pasha (1815-90); Linant Bey; Gisborne; Bruce; Hekekian Bey; Mougel Bey; Said Pasha; Clot Bey; Cahil Effendi et al. There are conversations on the Suez Canal; Mehemet Ali; religion; and life in Egypt. Included is a copy of a letter from Francis Gisborne to Lord Canning, dated 20 February 1856, relating to the Eastern Telegraph Company.

Journal containing holograph notes on Nassau William Senior's visit to Egypt, 18 November-31 December 1855. It includes conversations with: Ferdinand de Lesseps (1805-94); Said Pasha (1822-63); Linant Bey [Adolphe Linant de Bellefonds]; Mougel Bey; Lord Canning (1812-62); Sir Frederick Bruce (1814-67); Stephan Bey, et al. Most of the conversations relate to the Suez Canal, as S. accompanied a group of engineers on an international commission to study the feasibility of such a canal. There are descriptions of all aspects of Egyptian life.
