Stating that Lady Hart must not think of his house, as Sir Robert would probably not come home that year; he was planning to say what he wanted to say to nobody in the French Foreign Office, except to M. de Freycinet himself; Sir Robert Hart would be glad to hear any parliamentary news.

Forwarding prices for the supply of three steamers with twin screws, a speed of 10 Knots at sea, the draft to be 10ft, one vessel to have a tonnage of 700 tons and the other two of 500 tons, in accordance with Sir Robert Hart's enquiry; the armament to be furnished for each of these vessels also specified.

Prospectus of a proposed Anglo-Chinese Government school at Tientsin 'at which the sons of Chinese gentlemen may acquire currently with the progress of their Chinese studies such a foundation of knowledge of the English language and of the elementary branches of western study, as will enable them, after finishing their course at the school, to proceed to such special studies as their future life may require of them'; the course was to last six years and was designed to give the pupils a sound knowledge of the Chinese Classics, and of English sufficient for the initial requirements of a business life, enabling them to profit by the instruction of technical schools for naval engineering and military purposes or to enter the Peking College for training for the diplomatic or official services, or to prosecute their studies in the higher branches.
