Prospectus of a proposed Anglo-Chinese Government school at Tientsin 'at which the sons of Chinese gentlemen may acquire currently with the progress of their Chinese studies such a foundation of knowledge of the English language and of the elementary branches of western study, as will enable them, after finishing their course at the school, to proceed to such special studies as their future life may require of them'; the course was to last six years and was designed to give the pupils a sound knowledge of the Chinese Classics, and of English sufficient for the initial requirements of a business life, enabling them to profit by the instruction of technical schools for naval engineering and military purposes or to enter the Peking College for training for the diplomatic or official services, or to prosecute their studies in the higher branches.
