John Williams to T. F. Roberts,

John Williams to T. F. Roberts,. Stating that the main road to the National Library would be the road leading from the Penglais or Machynlleth road.

Lady Lucy C. Frederick Cavendish,

Defends the Church in Wales against the charge of 'proselytism', if coercion or bribery was implied in the term; Church could not be blamed if the Clergy won converts by their earnest work and religious influence in their schools and parishes; does not believe that earnest Welshmen like the Welsh Bishops would condone bribery and coercion exercised against children, and is at a loss to understand why more board schools were not set up in Wales, if undue pressure were indeed exercised in the Church Schools and so keep the 'kidnapping parson' out; surely it was not unreasonable that Church people should be employed as teachers in Church Schools; if children were compelled to attend Church, it did not follow that they would be driven into confirmation.

Letter Book of Stuart Rendel. Most of the letters are addressed to Stuart Rendel and a few to his wife Ellen ('Nellie'). The correspondents are all members of the Rendel family:. Alexander Meadows Rendel (fo. 9), Catharine Jane Rendel (ff. 42-69), Edith Rendel (ff. 145-153), Emily P. Rendel (ff. 155-165), Fanny Rendel (ff. 73-142), George Wightwick Rendel (ff. 1-7, 13-23), James Meadows Rendel (fo. 11), and Uncle W. [Sir William Armstrong] (ff. 27-32). Most of the letters discuss personal and domestic matters. Three letters from Catharine Jane Rendel (ff. 46-52) refer to the invention by George Wightwick Rendel and Armstrong of underwater electrically operated explosives against the Sebastopol fortifications. See also A5-7.

Letter from A. C. Humphreys-Owen,

Thanking him for his timely warning of an impending bye-election in co. Mont., but refers to financial disappointments in his railway investments; thanks Rendel for his offer to contribute towards his expenses, but feels that the party should decide whether it was worth meeting a substantial share of his election expenses.

Letter from A. C. Humphreys-Owen,

Complains of the tendency of Lloyd George and South Wales to sacrifice Wales to English radicalism; refers to his correspondence with Sir Watkin, urging him and other Conservative laymen to join with the Bishop (not specified which) to accept the Bishop's views; is critical of the Bishop of Hereford's philippic against Protection and is grieved that David Davies had been caught by the Tariff reformers and fears that he might develop into a Tory capitalist.

Letter from A. C. Humphreys-Owen,

Offering criticisms of details in a letter written by Rendel concerning the Education Bill on the grounds, among other reasons, that it was too exclusively an appeal to Nonconformists, it being unwise to ignore men like the Bishop of Hereford and would discourage Liberal Churchmen; objects also to a reference to a passage which could be construed as too laudatory of Lloyd George as 'it does not do to flourish Lloyd George too much in people's faces'; objects to the 'gush' about Temple, whom he criticises for his dishonesty about the Howells' and Berriew School schemes and his heretical 'Essay and Review'.

Letter from A. C. Humphreys-Owen,

Referring to his illness; also remarks that he was concerting measures with Lloyd George and Richard Jones Pendinas for the inevitable default of co. Mont. in carrying out the Education Act; with a further letter from Mrs Humphreys-Owen referring to her husband's health and family and social matters.

Letter from A. E. Humphreys-Owen,

With references to the Empire League, a meeting addressed by David Davies, the progress of the Gas Co. at Barking and asking Rendel's views on the expediency of employing the Arsenal at Woolwich in manufacturing other goods besides armaments, in order to avoid dismissing workers.
