Davies, J. H. (John Humphreys), 1871-1926

Essay on the History of Arthur King of the Britons,

An early nineteenth century 'Essay on the History of Arthur King of the Britons' (40 pp.) written under the pseudonym 'Venedocian' and probably submitted for competition. The essay bears the inscription, in a different hand, 'Owens Ysgeifiog Flintshire'.

Llyfr John Morris I,

A late eighteenth century manuscript in the hand of John Morris containing 'cerddi' and 'carolau' by Humphrey Jones (Pen y Bont), Walter Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'] (1786, 1790) and [David Jones] ('Dewi Fardd'); two religious verses in English by, respectively, David Thomas ['Dafydd Ddu Eryri'] and Edward Barnes, together with Welsh translations; 'englynion', partly intended as memorial inscriptions, by Jonathan Hughes, John Edwards ('y Prydydd o Lyn Ceiriog'), Edward Barnes, David Thomas, D[avid] Ellis (Amlwch) and John Morris, and a prayer by John Morris. The spine is lettered 'Llyfr J. Morris - I'.

Llyfr John Morris,

A late eighteenth century manuscript in the hand of John Morris containing a collection of 'carolau' and 'cerddi' by Jonathan Hughes, Llangollen, together with a 'cerdd' and a 'carol' by Daniel Jones, and a carol each by Jo[h]n Edw[ard]s (Glyn Cei[rio]g) and Arthur Jones. All the poems by Jonathan Hughes are included in the author's Bardd a Byrddau (y Mwythig, 1778). At the beginning of the volume is 'Bannau yr llyfyr hwn', being a table of titles and first lines, and the numbers of verses, of each carol. Paste-downs on the inside upper and lower covers contain a note and an 'englyn' by D[afydd] M[orris], Llanfair [Caereinion], 1868, etc.

Llyfr David Morris,

A carelessly compiled collection of 'cerddi' and 'penillion' written for the most part by David Morris, Llanwddyn during the period 1778-84. The majority of the poems are anonymous but a few are attributed to Hugh Morris, David Morris, Humphrey Jones, Griffith Evans, Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant') (1783), ?David Owen (Ceuna[n]t Coch) and David Llwyd ('o Gowny'). Also included in the volume are a few miscellaneous entries such as a notice of letting of Tynykiln, parish of Llanvehangel, Montgomeryshire, 1778; undated accounts; signatures of Thomas Jones (Cownu), David Davies ('Y Wevar'), etc.; receipts from David Morris, 1779; etc.

Barddoniaeth,

A composite volume made up of fragments of eighteenth century manuscripts containing 'cywyddau', 'awdlau' and englynion' by Dafydd ap Gwilym, Sion Tudyr ('o Wickwar') and Rhys Jones [o'r Blaenau] (holograph), with a few annotations and variants from the manuscripts of D[avid] Johnes [Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd] and [James Davies] 'Iago ap Dewi'; 'cerddi' and 'penillion' by John Owen and Sir Rees Cadwalader, and anonymous poetry. Among the pastedowns is a voucher to the Reverend David Richards from M. Monk, Chester Courant Office in respect of a Cymmrodorion Society [in Powys] advertisement, 1820-3.

Commonplace book of R. Pugh,

A late eighteenth and early nineteenth century commonplace book of R[obert] Pugh, [N]eston containing copious extracts from printed sources entitled 'On Assurance', 'On Justification', 'On baptism...', 'On Reformation of Manners', 'Speeches & Anecdotes of dying Criminals', 'Divine Consolation ...', 'On Overcoming the World', 'On Libels', 'Orthodox Heterodox Opinions', 'On Orthodoxy & Conformity to Ch[urch] of England', 'On the Uncertainty of the Seasons', 'on Marrying', 'Lord Thurlow' (died 1806), 'On Unity in Religion', 'Of Seditions & troubles', 'On Charity', 'Mount Aetna in Sicily', etc.; poetry, including 'On early Rising - to a Friend' by B. C. (from the Shrewsbury Chronicle, 30 October 1789), 'On the Marriage of Miss Eliza Sackville to the Honorable Colonel Herbert' by Richd Cumberland, and 'An Hymn of Praise & Resignation' by T. H., 3 October 1763; a letter from Lydia Foulkes, Machynlleth to her cousin Mrs Lees, Shrewsbury, 1814 (an account of the last illness and death of the Reverend Thomas Charles of Bala); a 'Memorandum' of the 'Conversation & Advice' of the Reverend Henry Venn, rector of Yelling, near Huntingdon to [Charles] Jerram, [Thomas Truebody] Thomason and John Havel of the University of Cambridge; and recipes for wine. There is a thumb-index at the beginning of the volume.

Coffadwriaeth Thomas Beynon,

(I). Verses entitled 'Coffadwriaeth Y Parch. Archddiacon [Thomas] Beynon' by 'Galaethfardd Gwawdrydd', ie Thomas Lloyd Jones ('Gwenffrwd'), Mobile, Alabama, USA, late of Holywell, Flintshire, and 'Verses' by the Reverend Daniel Evans ('Daniel Ddu o Geredigion'), Fellow of Jesus College, Oxford, composed after having read the poem by 'Galaethfardd Gwawdrydd'. The volume is in the hand of Dd Morgan, Penrhyn Deudraeth and is said to have been transcribed on 16 March 1871, and recopied on 5 December 1879, from Awenyddion Gwent a Dyfed: sef y Cyfansoddiadau Barddoniaidd a ennillasant Dlysau, a Gwobrau eraill yn Eisteddfod Caerdydd ... ar yr 20fed, 21ain, a'r 22ain o Awst 1834. (Ii). Y Dref Amddifad. Y Cerddi Arwrawl a anfonwyd i'r Parch. Archddiacon Beynon erbyn Eisteddfod Cymreigyddion Caerfyrddin, Gwyl Dewi Sant 1829, (Caerfyrddin). Printed.

Manion Mawddwy,

A composite volume of transcripts, biographies and miscellaneous notes almost entirely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans. They include 'Helfa Hawdd ei Hebgor' (published in Y Geninen, 1887, pp. 200-204) (with instructions to the printer in the hand of [John Thomas, 'Eifionydd']); 'Brigant, neu Chware'r Brigant'; 'Canau' or poems in free metres transcribed by H[ugh] B[rython] H[ughes], partly in [18]74; 'Buchedd Marthin Sant'; 'Biographia Cambrensis: Intended as A Supplement to "Enwogion Cymru" by D. Silvan Evans; 'Cronfa Mawddwy ... neu Manion Mawddwy: 1863', largely consisting of rough notes on Welsh etymology, dialect words, place and personal names, etc.; etc. Mounted in the volume is a holograph letter from the Reverend E[benezer] W[ood] Edwards, Ruabon Vicarage to [D. Silvan Evans], [18]64 (date (1820) of birth and christening of [Sir] W[atkin] W[illiams] Wynn). Manuscripts in the Llanover and British Museum collections are quoted as sources of several of the transcripts. The spine is lettered 'Manion Mawddwy'.

Testunau Cymraeg yn llaw W. H. Mounsey, etc.

A composite volume of the period c. 1869-70, almost entirely in the hand of W[illiam] H[enry] Mounsey and containing miscellaneous extracts and fragments of transcripts of literary and historical texts, with copious annotations by the scribe. Among the contents are a collation of the printed text of Y Marchog Crwydrad (Y Brython, 1862, pp. 1-17, 138-52, 257-67, 361-74) with the text of Llanstephan MS 178; 'Iolo Morganwg's opinion of Lewis Morris'; an Irish-English glossary (part of letter A, 4 pp.); 'Prophwydoliaeth y Ddau Fuddugoliaeth a gant Hwch y Maran', with an English translation; 'Stabat Mater', with an English translation; 'englynion', 'cywyddau', etc. from a variety of sources, such as 'Llyfr Hir' and 'Llyfr Du' and manuscripts of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') and David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'), 'Llythyr at Dafydd Jones [Trefriw]' from John Pywel, Rhyd Eirin, Llansannan, 1766; etc. The spine is lettered 'Welsh Miscellanea - W. H. Mounsey'.

Manion Cof A Chadw, I-III,

(With 321-322C). One of three composite volumes largely in the hand of D. Silvan Evans containing copious transcripts of prose and poetry texts and extracts from several manuscripts in the Llanover collection, e.g. 'Dafydd ab Gwilym', 'Dafydd Ddu o Hiraddug', 'Pennillion diarhebol Iolo Morganwg', 'Pennillion Serch Gwasgar Iolo Morganwg', 'Dyriau Gwasgar', 'Darnau Defnyddion Doethineb Teuluaidd', 'Gwersi Doethineb', 'Gwasgaredd Doethineb', 'Silurian Phrases' 'Cyngor i Feirdd a Dysgedigion Cymru', 'Ffermyddiaeth', 'Arferion Morganwg', 'Trioedd y Llafurwr', 'Tywyddolion', etc. The transcripts of manuscripts at Llanover were made during the period 1880-2 but some annotations by the scribe are dated to 1892. According to a note at the end of the transcript, one transcript by H[ugh[ B[rython] H[ughes] was sent for publication in Yr Haul in 1874 (see Yr Haul, 1874, pp. 427-8). A note on page 406 refers to a transcript made by Thomas Miles ('Gwas Arglwyddes Llanover') for D. Silvan Evans in September 1882. The spine of each volume is lettered 'Manion Cof a Chadw', with the appropriate volume number.

Silvan Evans: Gwaith Gwallter Mechain (Carmarthen and London, 1868), vol. III pp. 569-76); 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Wiliam (Gwilym) Lleyn ('Allan o Lawysgrifau Ieuan Lleyn - 1799'), transcribed at Llangïan, May 1854, with collations and annotations dated to 1856; 'Gwaith Beirdd Cymru. Amryw', being 'awdlau' and 'cywyddau' by Sion Tudur, Tudur Aled, Deio ab Ieuan Du, Hywel ab Reinallt, Hywel ap Daf[ydd] ap Ieuan ap Rhys (Hywel Dafi), Richard Philip(s), Gwyrfyl Ferch Howel Vaughan (Gwerfyl Mechain), Ieuan Tew, Bedo Hafesb, Syr Robert Myltwn, Ieuan Brydydd Hir [Hen], Tudur Penllyn, Rhys Cain, Morys ab Howel ab Tudur, Gutto'r Glyn, Iolo Goch, Llywelyn Goch ap Meurig Hen ('o Nannau'), Huw Llwyd Cynfel and William Lleyn, with collations and annotations by D. Dyddiadur Robert Williams, Rhydycroesau,

A diary, January 1832 to 21 February 1847, of Robert Williams, perpetual curate of Rhydycroesau, near Oswestry from 1838 to 1879. Robert Williams served as curate of Llangernyw, Denbighshire from 1833 to 1836 and was appointed perpetual curate of Llangadwaladr in 1837. The diary, which is written in Welsh, contains references to events in his home district of Conway as well as to the areas where he served as a cleric. Beginning at the end of the volume there are poems by [John Jones] ('Tegid') (1828); a list of books entitled 'Llyvrau yn Ty Deon', 19 August 1832; accounts with booksellers, stationers, etc., 1832-9; extracts from Aristotle's Rhetoric; and lists of clothes ('Rhestr Dillad'), linen ('Lliain') and carpenter's tools ('Oferynau Saer').

Catalogue of Panton manuscripts,

A transcript of 'A Catalogue of the Manuscripts, which Paul Panton Esqr. of Plas Gwyn, bought of the Rev. Evan Evans, Octr. 27 1787, and received at Plas Gwyn, Decr. 29th 1787. Transcribed from the MSS of the late Paul Panton Esqr By David Thomas [Dafydd Ddu Eryri]. A.D. 1792' [See BM MS 15024]. The list closes with the inscription 'Y Fron Oleu, Llanrug, near Caernarvon. June 6 1821' and is said to have been transcribed from a manuscript of David Thomas 'which has been lost for years and is scarcely legible'.

A late seventeenth century imperfect manuscript containing 'Observationes in Latinum gramaticam'; 'De Rhetorica'; abridgments of Ovid's Metamorphoses and '[H]istory of ye first [monarchies] ... Books of Justin' by John Gu[?nter], 1671/2; proverbs ('Adagionum conven ...') 'Observatiunculae in Lucii Flori Historiam collectae'; etc.

A composite volume of three small notebooks containing 'cywyddau', 'englynion' and English verses by 'Sioseb Nerquis', with some 'englynion' by 'I. Ddu' and 'Merddin Wylts [sic] o Nerquis'; and transcripts by Mary Richards, Darowen, c. 1861, of Welsh metrical psalms and hymns by Thomas Roberts ('Philo Cadfan'), Joseph Marpole, William Jones, John Williams (Dolgellau), and anonymous compositions. One of the hymns, dated 1861, is in memory of the Reverend James Hamer 'Offeiriad Llanfihangel [yng Ngwynfa] a Discybl i David Harris [?Carno]'.

Greek-Latin vocabularies,

An imperfect manuscript, dated c. 1666, from the Darowen library, containing Greek-Latin vocabularies and extracts entitled 'Obs[ervationes] ex Theocrite collectae', 'Observationes ex Graeco Testamento detractae', 'Isocratis oratio ad Demonicum', 'Obs[ervationes] ex Herodiano Collectae', etc.

Scrap book,

A small scrap book [of Morris Davies, Bangor] containing cuttings of English poetry by David Williams Breeze, Portmadoc, 1844, and others; articles entitled 'Welsh Literature' (containing 'A biographical memoir of Dr John Davies of Mallwyd') and 'Hen Emynwyr' (Dafydd William, Llandeilo Fach, and Thomas Williams, Bethesda'r Fro), book reviews, etc. Sources of some of the cuttings are noted as follows: Bangor Chronicle [?North Wales Chronicle], Carnarvon Herald [Carnarvon and Denbigh Herald], Herald Cymraeg, Y Goleuad, Baner Cymru and Christian World. The volume was originally used by Jane Davies, Upper Bangor to record English poetry, 1832-5, and lists of mottoes of titled and landed families. The spine is lettered 'Original Poetry'.

Traethawd ar lwyrymwrthodiad,

An essay (33 pp.) on total abstinence entitled 'Traethawd ar y manteision ac anfanteision Llwyrymwrthodiad oddiwrth bob math o wirodydd meddwol o dan arwydd y Rhiban Glas' by 'Eukrateias' (J. Myles Jones, Llansawel). Written at the end are a few miscellaneous englynion, etc., among them being an 'Englyn i Bont ar Llechau, ger Llangadog, sir Gaerfyrddin'.
