Testunau Cymraeg, etc.

A composite volume in the hand of W[illiiam] H[enry] Mounsey containing 'englynion' by Sion Tudur, Morys Dwyfech (Morys ap Ifan ap Einion), Syr Ifan o Garno, Master Thomas Llwyd, Gruffydd ap Ifan ap Ll'n Fychan, Rhys Cain, Edward Morys, Ieuan Gethin ap Ieuan ap Lleision Syr Lewis, Sion Vaughan, Huw Llwyd Cynfael, Wiliam Cynwal, Wm Phylip, Tudur Aled and Syr Owain, and anonymous 'englynion'; a 'cywydd' (incomplete) by Gruffydd Llwyd ap Dafydd ap Einion Llygliw; prose texts, including 'Hanes 24 Brenin a varnwyd yn benna ac yn wrola o'r Brutaniaid i Ddeiliad ac i gwncwerio ...', '... y llyvyr a elwir Ymryson yr Enaid a'r Corph yr hwn a droes Iolo Goch o Ladin ynghymraec', 'Y naw rhinwedd a ddanvonodd Duw i druan ddyn', ' ... y llyvyr i ddysgu adnabod pawb wrth liw', 'Natturie y Saith Blaned', '...y llyvyr a ddanvones Alesdottlys i Aleysander Mawr o adnabodigaeth dynion wrth eu cyrph', pedigrees, etc.; 'The Tragical Death of the Children of Lir or the Second Woe of Irish Story' ('Translated by Edward O'Reilly Author of the Irish Dictionary'); 'Cath Cluana Tairbh' (fragment, 2 folios); and a fragment of 'Y Marchog Krwydrad', from Llanwrin MS 2 (NLW MS 15533). The majority of the prose texts were transcribed from manuscripts in the British Museum during the period 1859-60 and many of them were printed in Y Brython, 1859-60. The spine is lettered 'Welsh and Irish Tracts. W. H. Mounsey'.

Testunau swyngyfaredd,

A mutilated volume containing texts on witchcraft entitled 'Hyfforddiad i alw rhyw ffath ar Ysprydion y rhai ai geilw nhw yn Dylwyth Teg', 'Y Ffordd ar modd I gael trysor cyddiedig a fyddo gwedi ei gadw oddiwrth Iws Dyn', and 'I alw neu gyfarch yr Yspryd Brett'; 'Scot's discovery of Witchcraft. A Charm against a shot, or a Waistcoat of proof'; and 'Conjuration. An inventory of the names, shapes, Powers, Gover[n]ments and affects, of devils and spirits, of their several signorus and Degrees'.

Texts for marriage services,

A small notebook intended as a collecting book for a testimonial to the Reverend William Rees ('Gwilym Hiraethog'), Liverpool containing a printed letter relating to the testimonial inside the cover but no collection entries in the book, which was subsequently used for copying texts suitable for marriage services.

The Aromatarians Journey ...,

An annotated metrical manuscript (2940 lines) entitled 'The Aromatarians Journey into The West of England and Part of Wales by One of the Party. 1787'. Preceding the text is a Dedication 'To The no less Ancient and Venerable than Worshipful Mystery of The Grocery of London' by the Prime Warden, December 1787, and a Preface. The journey comprised Hounslow, Windsor, Bagshot, Frefolk [Freefolk], Andover, Ambresbury [Amesbury], Wilton, Sarum, Woodyeates, Winborn [Wimborne], Merley, Dorchester, Bridport, Axminster, Honiton, Exeter, Chudleigh, Ashburton, Modbury, Ugborough, Mount Edgecomb [Edgecumbe], Plymouth, Ivey-Bridge [Ivybridge], Totnes, Newton-Bushel, Exeter, Columpton [Cullompton], Taunton, Bridgwater, Glassenbury [Glastonbury], Wells, Bath, Bristol, Gloster [Gloucester], Chepstow, Tintern Abbey, Monmouth, Hereford, Ledbury, Colwall, Worcester, Droitwich, Stourport, Tenbury, Bucknel[l], Ludlow, Bishop's Castle, Montgomery, Forden, Newtown, Welsh-Pool [Welshpool], Powis Castle, Shrewsbury, Coalbroke Dale [Coalbrookdale], Broseleys Well, Bridgnorth, Wolverhampton, Soho, Birmingham, Stratford [upon Avon], Woodstock, Blenheim [Palace], Oxford, Henley and Windsor. Inset is a letter, 26 November 1929, from L. Hickman Barnes, Grocers' Hall, Princes Street, E.C.2 to Miss E. M. Williams [of the National Library of Wales, Aberystwyth] informing the recipient that the Prime Warden of the Company in 1787 was Mr Henry Nettleship, who had been elected on 13 July, and that on that date the Court resolved 'that the Master, Wardens & 3 or 4 other Members of the Court be requested to visit the churches of Ugborough & Bucknell, which had been purchased in accordance with the Lady Slaney Trust, also Forden, & the School at Colwall'. The spine is lettered 'MS The Journey'.

A description (ff i-ii, 1-6) of the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots entitled 'The Arraignmt of the Queene of Scotts in Foderingham Castell in the County of Northampton the viiith of Februaru 1586'.

The Book Of Martyrs,

An incomplete transcript of the first four books of John Fox: Acts and Monuments of the Church (The Book of Martyrs) edition not identified but probably one of the editions published in Black Letter (i.e. up to and including the 1641 edition). The transcript starts with the sixth persecution (reference to folio 85) and ends with the dissension between Pope Gregory and the citizens of Rome (reference to folio 363). The transcriber usually writes 'Reade the Booke' when he omits portions of the text, such as copies of documents, etc., and he refers to the works of John Whitgift and ?T[homas] C[artwright] in the margin in addition to the marginalia and sources copied from Fox's work.

An autographed presentation copy from the author to the Reverend J. Jenkins, Kerry of Edward Davies, The claims of Ossian examined and appreciated (Swansea, 1825), containing an autograph letter to the Reverend Jenkins, 29 April 1826, [?from W. J. Rees].

The Daily Journal ...,

The Daily Journal: or, Gentleman's, Merchant's, and Tradesman's, Complete Annual Accompt - Book, ... 1801, with a few manuscript accounts. Inset is a letter from Rice Rees, Llandovery, to [ ] Williams (writer regrets being unable to help an old friend but it was impossible for him to reach Caernarvonshire to serve the following Sunday; writer intends going to Radnorshire the following week; college vacation and the consecration of the chapel). Some of the pages have been sewn at the top and the bottom and contain fishing flies.

The Letters of Goronwy Owen,

Corrected page-proofs of [J. H. Davies (ed.), The Letters of Goronwy Owen (Cardiff, 1924), pp. i-vi, 1-207. The date 'Oct. 1923' is stamped on the first page of the Introduction (which is shorter than that in the book as printed) and Appendix XI and the indices are wanting in the proofs.

A copy of The Quackade. A mock heroic poem, in five canto's. By Whirligig Bolus, Esq; (London: Printed by Thomas Syringe, 1752). The inscription 'from the Author' [?Thomas Harris - see below] occurs on one of the end-papers. Riddles, charades, etc. have been written on the end-papers.

The Quakers in Wales,

A volume in the hand of J. H. Davies, begun on 11 January [19]13, containing transcripts and extracts relating to the Quakers in Wales. The material is arranged and the volume indexed according to counties. Among relevant insets are three letters to J. H. Davies from F. W. Gibbin, Neath, [19]13, J. J. Jory, London, 1923, and Norman Penney, Friends' Reference Library, London, 1913.

The Welsh Jacobites,

A bound extract (pp. 194-213) [? from Cofnodion a Chyfansoddiadau Eisteddfod Genedlaethol 1909 (Llundain)] containing the adjudication by J. Arthur Price on an essay competition on the subject of 'The Welsh Jacobites' and the winning essay by Herbert M[illingchamp] Vaughan [of Llangoedmor], together with one page of additional 'Notes' in the hand of the author. Inset is a letter from Herbert M. Vaughan, Llangoedmore to [J. H.] Davies [1914] (covering the presentation of the volume, references to other books in the writer's possession and to the recipient's treasures, an invitation to the recipient to the writer's home). According to an inscription by the author in a similar copy of the work in the National Library of Wales 'Only six copies of this essay ... were printed in this form'.

A volume containing 'the fair and last transcrb'd copy, 1808, of 'Don Alonzo di Giorgio, il Conde di Montenero, a Drama' by Thomas Powell, dedicated to the Right Honble Horace Walpole, Lord Orford, with some loose papers at the end, including 'Apology for my Compositions in the french language'.
