Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry,

The original manuscript of 'Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry', 1546-1800, in the autograph of the Reverend William Rowlands ('Gwilym Lleyn'), with additions and corrections by D. Silvan Evans, including a few contributions in the autograph of Richard Williams [then of Welshpool, afterwards of Celynog, Newtown], etc. A note in pencil indicates that pp. 10 and 333 are wanting; other pages have been cut into two or more pieces.

Catalogue of Welsh ballads,

An interleaved volume (385 pp.) belonging to J. H. Davies made up of pages from Y Traethodydd, 1886-92 ('Hen Gerddi y Cymry', a catalogue of Welsh ballads compiled by John Jones ('Myrddin Fardd'), with pages 346-50 from Revue Celtique, II (part of a supplement [by D. Silvan Evans] to Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry). There are numerous additions and annotations by J. H. Davies, including cross-references to his own Bibliography of Welsh ballads printed in the 18th century (London, 1911) and an index to the authors, etc. of the pre-1800 ballads in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue. The numbers used in the index correspond to the numbers in the 'Myrddin Fardd' catalogue while the page references are to the pages in the present volume. Loose inside are a list of ballads, etc. by Thomas Edwards ('Twm o'r Nant'), Hugh Jones, Llangwm and Ellis Roberts, with number or page references as before, and a letter, 1908, from D. Rhys Phillips, Swansea to [J. H. Davies] (jottings on three Shrewsbury 'effusions').

Miscellaneous notes,

A small notebook which belonged to J. H. Davies containing bibliographical references to the Reverend Peter Williams, mainly from William Rowlands (Gwilym Lleyn) (ed. D. Silvan Evans), Llyfryddiaeth y Cymry (Llanidloes, 1869), together with a few biographical notes. At the reverse end of the volume are a few notes relating to (?) Cardiganshire Highways Committee and some observations on Sir Owen M. Edwards, perhaps for an article or an address.

Twenty letters, 1876-97, to D. Silvan Evans from John Jones ('Ivon'; 1820-98), Aberystwyth (the offer of Llanwrin, mention of the Bonsall family, sympathy, re a memorial to [Evan Evans] 'Y Prydydd Hir', wishing to know whether an article he (Ivon) wrote on Aberystwyth periodical publications is at Llanwrin, the second edition of Ysten Sioned, his inquiries about a dog for the addressee). Two of the letters are signed 'John a Mary Jones'. Also included are a letter, 1894, from Hughes & Son, Wrexham to D. Samuel, Aberystwyth and a copy of an extract from Y Goleuad, 1 June 1894, concerning the second edition of Ysten Sioned.

(I) Miscellaneous press cuttings, 1860-94 and undated, kept by D. Silvan Evans and including Welsh poetry, correspondence ('Ieithyddiaeth', etc.), church affairs (account of a Welsh confirmation at Llanover by the Right Reverend the bishop of Llandaff, [?1888], an article doubting the need for a new church at Aberystwyth [1882] etc.) and obituary notices of Edward Breese, Morva [sic] Lodge, Portmadoc [1881] and Morris Jones, 'Meurig Idris', 1875. (Ii) A bibliography of Cardiganshire parishes written on slips of paper.

Fifteen letters to D. Silvan Evans, one, 1885, from (?) M. B. Wynn, Rothley, Loughborough (the term 'gafaelgi') and fourteen, 1871-9 and undated, from W[illia]m W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (Archaeologia Cambrensis, replying to queries and requesting assistance himself, Sir Watkin's uneasiness about [Gruffydd] Roberts's grammar and his wish to have it returned (from Paris), sympathy, an invitation to the addressee to Peniarth).

Seventeen letters, 1859-79, to D. Silvan Evans from the Reverend Robert Williams (1810-81), sixteen of which are written from Rhydycroesau (rectory), Oswestry and one from Culmington Rectory, Bromfield (the writer's Cornish dictionary, advice, words and their meanings, re translations for Mr Skene, 'these English Bishops', the 'Celtic Remains', the 'Greal', etc., the death of Henry Parry, r[ector] of Bylchau (mention of his father's library), interest in the addressee's preferment, he has been making a catalogue of the books in St Asaph cathedral library, reference to the death of Professor Evander Evans and Professor Ebel, the slowness of so many of his subscribers to pay, the writer's health, sympathy, his removal to Culmington).

Eight letters, 1858 [?1859]-74, from Tho[ma]s Stephens, Merthyr Tydfil, seven of which are addressed to D. Silvan Evans and one to W. W. E. Wynne, Peniarth (copy). Accompanying one of the letters to D. Silvan Evans are transcripts of four letters, 1846-9, from the Reverend Walter Davies ('Gwallter Mechain'), writing from Penmaen Dovey n[ea]r Machynlleth and Llanrhaiadr, Oswestry, to Thomas Stephens ('Casnodyn'). Subjects touched upon include D. Silvan Evans's orthography [i.e. Llythyraeth yr iaith Gymraeg], the 'Madogwys', the Llangollen essay, the (new) bishop of Bangor, the Hengwrt manuscripts and articles for Archaeologia Cambrensis.

Silvan Evans (college examinations, acknowledging congratulations, the Welsh Prayer Book committee, etc.) and one to [J. H. Silvan] Evans, 1903 (sympathy on the death of his father, the completion of the dictionary).

Enclosed are letters, 1896, to D. Silvan Evans from J. Jones, Cefn Coed, Merthyr Tydfil, M. Morgan Jones, Llanrug, T. Williams, Llanystumdwy and John T. Evans, Llanelly (2), and to the bishop from John Williams, Llansamlet and D. Watcyn Morgan, Morriston. There are also two letters [1899] to D. Silvan Evans from D. R. (L.) Lloyd, Llanarth (the illness and death of the writer's father). The letters have been tentatively numbered - several are not fully dated.
