An early nineteenth century manuscript in the hand of, and consisting largely of poetry by, David Thomas ('Dafydd Ddu Eryri'). Most of the poems have been published in Corph y Gaingc (Dolgellau, 1810). The volume also contains extracts from printed works; 'Yr Angel gwarchweidwol. Cân newydd Gorph. 27 1802'; a poem entitled 'My Mother. Written in America and published in the Chester Chronicle June 14 1805'; 'Catechism Byr'; memoranda and extracts dealing with the history of Protestantism (e.g. 'Erthyglau Lambeth', 'Erthyglau Cymmanfa Dort ... 1618', 'Calvin', 'Bacsteriaeth', 'Arminiaeth', etc.); poetry by Gruffudd Wiliam ('Gutyn Peris'), 1807; 'Gweddillion Englynion yr Eos, a luniwyd yn yr Eisteddfod Ynghaerwys 1567 a gopiwyd allan o lyfr y Bardd Côch o Fon Mai 1807'; fragmentary notes and extracts (e.g. 'Y Saith Gelfyddyd (7 Rural Arts)', 'Y Saith Gysgadur', 'Enwau y Gwyr a gyfansoddasant y llyfr a elwir Gweddi Gyffredin Mai B.A. 1549', 'A Critique on the third Book of Paradise Lost', etc.); 'Emyn, allan o'r Saesoneg'; etc. Appended to one of the poems, 'Cwyn yr Henwr methiant', is the following note; 'Sepr. 7th 1805. Also to Gutyn Peris & Wm Jones Pentir & Dafydd Owen of Gaerwen, Llanystumdwy ... Sent copies of Fy Anwyl Fam, to the said persons'.

A miscellany entitled 'Blwch Manion', largely of the period 1855-9, in the hand of Enoch Williams ('Llithrig Arfon'), tailor, Llanrwst. It contains strict- and free-metre poetry by the scribe and others; a copy of part of a letter from the scribe's brother, W. E. Williams, Trenton, New Jersey, to his uncle Richard Jones [Capel Curig], [18]56 (the writer's reminiscences of Capel Curig, the writer's church membership); the scribe's wages accounts and tailoring measurements; memoranda relating to eisteddfodau; an essay on 'Manteision Gwybodaeth'; an extensive collection of Welsh proverbs; etc. The titles of the poems include 'Englyn i Glogwyn yr Ogo. ger Llanrwst', 'Llinellau Ar farwolaeth Miss Margaret Jones, merch Mr R. A scrap-book inferentially compiled by John Lloyd Jones ('Clwydwenfro'; 1835-1919) containing press cuttings and a few manuscript items. Some of the cuttings are dated within the 1850s-1870s and among the more interesting titles are 'Hynodion Cwm Rhondda .... Testyn Cystadleuol Eisteddfod y Porth, Nadolig, 1861'; 'Collegiate and University Education in Wales'; 'Llythyr oddiwrth y Parch. Morris Phillips, Cenhadwr i India'; 'Teyrnged i Goffadwriaeth Ioan Pedr'; 'Beirniadaeth ar Gyfansoddiadau Barddonol Eisteddfod Genedlaethol Aberdar, Awst 1861'; 'Llangollen Great National Eisteddfod' [1858]; 'Y Ffrwydriad yn Abercarn'; 'Sketches of Cardiff Preachers'; etc. The manuscript material comprises a tale entitled 'The Bride of Santa Croce', 19 November 1856, described in an annotation by J. Ll. James as 'the composition of the late John Griffith Davies (son of the Rev. J. Davies ['Siôn Gymro'], Glandwr, Pembrokeshire) who wrote it and sent it to John Lloyd James, then a student at Carmarthen College, that he might fill up the outline', and verses entitled 'Y Messiah', etc. addressed to John Ll. James, Berllandawel, Llanglwydwen and annotated in the latter's hand 'J. G. Davies, Yetwen, pan yn Narberth', etc. The outer upper cover is inscribed, in the hand of J. H. Davies, 'Articles and poetry from Cyfaill y Werin and other papers'.

File 5: A holograph letter from [the Reverend] W[illiam] Davies, Llanwryn [Montgomeryshire], 1710, to Henry Newman at the Reverend Mr Shute's in Bartlet's Buildings, London (receipt of letter and a packet from the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, subscriptions from other parishes, has partly prevailed with a certain minister to become a corresponding member). The letter bears the number 2381 (see Mary Clement (ed.), Correspondence and minutes of the S.P.C.K. relating to Wales 1699-1740 (Cardiff, 1952), p. 35. Abstract No. 2381). The letters are addressed to John Roberts ('Sion Lleyn'), Pwllheli (4), 1791-1806 (corrections to addressee's poetry, tributes to writer's brother, Humphrey, after his death, some short poetical compositions by the writer), to Griffith Williams ('Gutyn Peris'), Llandygai (8), 1799-1819, (poetry, subjects upon which writer desired addressee to compose hymns, meetings of bards and eisteddfodau, comments and news of contemporary poets, writer's health and work), and one letter, addressee not named, 1804, (addressee's poetry which writer had received, desires addressee to render 2 Samuel XXII in strict metres and to ask other poets to do the same). The poetry includes verses entitled 'Y Cynauaf mawr diweddaf' subscribed 'D. T. a'i cant allan o'r Saesneg ar ddymuniad John Jones Llandwrog Medi 10d 1804 (cf. Dafydd Thomas (Dafydd Ddû Eryri), Corph y Gaingc (Caernarfon, 1834), pp. 323-4), and 'Englynion newyddion i Long newydd o Gaernarfon yr hon a elwir Valiant'. A manuscript consisting largely of transcripts and memoranda by Mary Richards and Thomas Richards of Darowen. The volume appears originally to have been used as an account book of receipts and disbursements in respect of the farms of Llwyn, Cafnmaelen and Byrthlwydd [parish of Dolgellau, Merioneth], 1799-1802, and also to record biographies of [James Crichton, 'The Admirable'], Sir Francis Walsingham, Sir Francis Drake and William Cecil, Lord Burghley.
