Correspondence and other papers broadly relating to various aspects of Taliesin's public life and work in Merthyr Tydfil and elsewhere. The file contains: some fifty-four draft and copy letters, or parts of letters, written by Taliesin Williams, including many letters to newspapers, 1831-1845, some twenty-seven letters and envelopes addressed to Taliesin and others, 1808-1843, and miscellaneous calling cards and addresses (T10/1); miscellaneous papers relating to his work as a schoolmaster in Neath and Merthyr Tydfil (T10/2); papers relating mostly to various aspects of public life in Merthyr Tydfil, including papers apparently relating to his service as special constable, various petitions to the Crown, the Marquess of Bute and others, and a few items relating to the Merthyr Tydfil Sympathetic Society, 1831-1839 (T10/3); and various papers relating to his activities with groups such as Cymreigyddion y Fenni and Cymreigyddion yr Alarch, being mainly lists of competition subjects, entries and adjudications by him (T10/4).
Of particular note is the beginning (2 pp.) of a draft, in Taliesin's hand, of a petition sent by the people of Merthyr Tydfil to Lord Melbourne, the Home Secretary, in July 1831 pleading for clemency for Lewis Lewis (Lewsyn yr Heliwr) and Richard Lewis (Dic Penderyn) (the final petition is apparently lost, see Gwyn A. Williams, The Merthyr Rising (Cardiff, 1988), p. 184) (in T10/3).

Papers, [1827]-[?20 cent., first ¼], relating mainly to Taliesin Williams's relatives and descendants. These include a draft of Taliesin's will, dated 1842 (T13/1); various catalogues of the manuscripts and books of Iolo Morganwg and Taliesin ab Iolo, [1827]-1848 (T13/2); locks of hair belonging to Taliesin and family members, [1830s] (T13/3); miscellaneous papers, 1847-[c. 1908], mostly of Taliesin's son Edward Williams (1826-1886), the iron-master (T13/4); two notebooks containing English poetry, the one in the hand of Edward Williams, 1845-1848 (T13/5), the other in an unidentified hand, [19 cent., second ¼] (T13/6); three volumes of autograph English poetry, 1838-1861, by Edward's uncle, James Petherick of Cardiff and Aberdare (T13/7); and a bundle of old paper wrappers, [?20 cent., first ¼], containing notes in the hand of Edward's son Aneurin Williams, retained as evidence of previous attempts at sorting the papers (T13/8).

Ninety-six letters, [?1868]-1899, from Aneurin Williams to his Mother [Mary Elizabeth Williams], (77) [?1868]-1899, Father [Edward Williams], (16) 1884-1885, and brothers Penry, (1) 8 January 1884, and Illtyd, (2) 15-20 September 1888. The letters are sent mostly from the United States, continental Europe and Egypt.

Some sixty-eight letters, 1887-1891, from Mrs Elizabeth Bowman (elder sister to Mary Petherick, see F12), Hereford, to Aneurin Williams, her first cousin once removed.
Williams was the executor of Bowman's will (see F18).

Nine letters, 1879-1891, to Aneurin Williams from various correspondents, including [?A. G.] Nagle, [Boulogne-sur-Mer], 21 March 1883 (ff. 15-16), James P[rosser] Petherick (brother of William Petherick, see F14), Christchurch, New Zealand, 1888-1891 (ff. 17-18, 23-26), James P[rice] Petherick (son of William Petherick), Hereford, 16 February 1888 (ff. 19-20), and Alice M[argaret] Hydes (daughter of James Prosser Petherick), 17 January 1889 (ff. 21-22).

Papers, 1878-1891, of Aneurin Williams as executor of the wills of Mary Petherick (d. 28 November 1887) and her sister Elizabeth Bowman (d. 14 January 1891), including wills, valuations, inventories and related papers, correspondence with solicitors and some legatees, bills and receipts, etc.
Also included is a copy of the will of Aneurin's father Edward Williams, 1884, and copies of prose pieces by Mary Petherick, 1878.

A commonplace book, [17 cent., third ¼], containing recipes, Latin epigrams, extracts from various printed sources, etc.

Letters (surnames Thomas-Williams) addressed mostly to Taliesin Williams (Taliesin ab Iolo).
The correspondents include John M. Traherne, 1832-1846 (Nos 752-769), William Vaughan, Lanelay, 1821-1827 (Nos 773-782), Edward Williams (Iolo Fardd Glâs), 1824-1827 (Nos 801-803), John Williams (Cynhafal [i.e. Ab Ithel]), 1841-1842 (Nos 817-822), M. J. Williams, Ynislas, 1838-1847 (Nos 834-853), and Peter Bailey Williams, 1821-1829 (Nos 865-867).

A small notebook containing seven poems, six of them attributed to Dafydd ap Gwilym, in the autograph of D. Ellis (cf. Cwrtmawr MSS 27 and 243). They are: (a) Kowydd y bakutan: 'A mi noswaith nid gwaith gwych'. (b) Kowydd y frân dyddyn: 'Y fran dreigl ymwan draw'. (c) Kowydd i fadog ac i ymofy[n] yr Eôs: 'Madog ap Grüffydd wyddaear'. (d) Kowydd yw dafod: 'Y tafod nid wyt hyfedr'. (e) Traethodl: 'Fal ir oedd fawr i hafard [hafrad]'. (f) Traethodl etto: 'Nid oes dychymig ymôn'. (No name appended). (g) Traethodl etto: 'Yr wyfi yn karv dyn'. At the end is a list of eleven 'cywyddau' (by D. ap G.) ? in the autograph of Moses Williams, apparently forming an index to some other volumes.

Another of the 'long books' of Glamorganshire copyist, Llywelyn Siôn (cf. Llanstephan MS 134, 'Llyfr Hir Amwythig'; NLW MS 970, known as the Merthyr Tydfil MS or 'Llyfr Hir Llywarch Reynolds'; and 'Llyfr Hir Llanharan', in the Cardiff Central Library). The first poems in this collection are wanting and those we have are numbered from 48-[528], but there are several gaps and the text is often imperfect or incomplete owing to the very fragile and decayed state of the manuscript. Many of the poems are also to be found in the manuscripts referred to above, although not always in the same sequence.

Leaves from various manuscripts: (i) A photostat facsimile (positive and negative) of a folio which was previously wanting in BM Add. MS 14967 after p. 72 (See Report on Manuscripts in the Welsh Language, Vol. II, Part IV, p. 1001, footnote). The actual folio, numbered xxxviii in the original pagination, has now been sent to the British Museum, with the donor's permission, to be restored to its proper place in the manuscript. It contains the following poems: (a) The last six lines of the 'cywydd' by Gutun Owain beginning 'Y vun uchel o fonedd.' The first line here is 'devwell oedd gennyf gellwair'; (b) A complete 'cywydd' by Gutun Owain beginning, 'Y lloer hael a lliwr heli'; (c) A 'cywydd' by Gruffudd Gryg beginning 'O nenn ffraingk i nann ffrangkon'; (d) A 'cywydd' by Iolo Goch beginning 'Ierwerth drvan ddioerwas.'; (ii) A single folio (?34) from a seventeenth century manuscript [?NLW MS 13078E, 'Llyfr Thomas Bona'], containing a complete copy of the 'cywydd' beginning 'Y ferch or fynachlog fayn', attributed here to Dafydd ap Gwilym, and an almost complete copy of 'Doy royddwn dan orevddail' ending at 'ynghred y byddvt ynghrog' (1.54). The remaining four lines have been supplied in the margin in a later hand (?that of Iolo Morganwg); (iii) A poem by WW beginning 'Herold wy ne gennad siwr' (22 stanzas). The copy is in a seventeenth century hand and seems to be a leaf (?f. 106) from some manuscript. Damaged; (iv) (a) A leaf (pp. 81-82) from an early seventeenth century manuscript containing pedigrees ('llyma ffordh i raeth merched gr: ap Llewelyn voythys', etc.) and a copy of a poem by Dafydd Nanmor beginning 'Nag ymddiried y gaffo bedydh'; (v) Two folios (153-154) from an early seventeenth century manuscript, containing: (a) 'Araith Ieuan Brydydh hir o lanyllted' [ym Morganwg R.V.] beginning, 'Llawer o bethav gwrthwyneb ysoweth y sudh i serchowgrwydh'. Above Iolo Morganwg has written 'Copied'; (b) 'Y Gredo ney/r/ffudh gatholig mewn Mityr Cyffredin', beginning, 'Rwyf yn Credy yn enw y tad' [Ieuan Brydydd hir ai Cant]. Alongside in the margin are two 'englynion' beginning 'Pedwar gwyn llafar ywch llifion - moroedh'; (c) 'Dvhvddiad Elffin, pan gavad Taliessin yngored wydhno goronir, i dad', beginning 'Elffin deg taw ath wylo'. 'Taliessin ae dywawt'; (d) 'Prif fardh wy i elffin, mi elwir Taliessin'. 'Taliessin ai cant'. The handwriting of items (iv) and (v) is very similar; (vi) Three folios from an eighteenth century manuscript containing: (a) The last 44 lines of the 'cywydd' by Dafydd Llwyd beginning 'Mae gwr llwyd yma rhag llaw'. The first line here is 'Nid r[----]dd ym nid rhwydd yma'; (b) [Cow]ydd Treial Tho: Johns, beginning, 'Cry out stand up crier'. 'Incerti Autoris'; (c) 'Cowydd y Cerddorion sef Grüffydd Evans a Sion Davies bencerddwyr deheubarth, 1706,' by Dafydd Manuel, beginning 'Daüwr sydd od eir i sôn'. There is also a copy of the form of the oath against simony; (viii) A leaf from a seventeenth century manuscript containing the last couplet only of a 'cywydd' by Siôn Phylip, 1613, and lines 1-44 of a 'cywydd' entitled 'marwnad am Domas ab Elis' beginning, 'Dvg brvtvs hwylvs helynt'. (The next folio would begin 'os i glera'...). The couplet by Siôn Phylip belongs to 'Cefais i ond cofus oedd'... . Mr W. Gerallt Harries states that this is the hand of Thomas Evans, Hendreforfudd (cf. NLW MSS 253 and 1553-54); (ix) A leaf from a seventeenth century manuscript, containing 'englynion' by Rhys Kain, Sion Philip, Huw Pennant, Tho: James, and Morgan ap Hugh Lewis, in the hand of William Bodwrda. (?) In the margin Iolo Morganwg has written 'Copied into Brith y coed'; (x) A leaf from a late sixteenth or early seventeenth century manuscript containing the first 38 lines of a 'cowydd' beginning 'kywirder vab howder hedd' by [Huw Arwystl]. The last line here is 'a chwi o waed ychaf oll'. In the margin Iolo Morganwg has written 'Llaw Sion Tudur honn, meddai Twm o'r Nant', but this appears doubtful; (xi) One folio, numbered 56 and 59, from a manuscript written c. 1600, containing a series of 'englynion' ['I'r Eos'] beginning 'Mvssic inn koedwic mewn Kevdawd - llwyn', an 'englyn' beginning 'y Kybydd a vydd ar i vael - yn gwilio', a few Welsh proverbs, and 'englynion' by S. Vaughan and John tudur, etc. The couplet 'Ysbys i dengys pob dyn ... 8 appears to be in the hand of William Salesbury. In the margin is an 'englyn' by Edward Moris beginning, 'Pulpud wraig coed wraig cauad rôs-glasliw', written in an eighteenth century hand.; (xii) A leaf of 'englynion' in the autograph of William Salesbury (cf. Cwrtmawr MS 3, to which it may have belonged). A copy of two of the four 'englynion' on the one side ('Mi welais wr yngwm twrch' and 'Er dyw dauydd loywrydd lafn') may be found in Panton MS 10,100. On the reverse side are five 'englynion', the first of which begins 'Porth thomas porth pigas p[?ic]. Damaged. Fragile; (xiii) Two fragments containing vaticinations attributed to Myrddin, Taliesin, and Adda Fras, and an 'Englyn i gael y pasc byth', etc., written in a seventeenth century hand, cf. NLW MS 13169B; (xiv) 'Tribanau' (3) 'at Llewelyn ab Iefan' by Edward Gamage, Periglor Plwyf St Athans, beginning, 'Pe bysswn drôll o Brydydd'. ... On the reverse side are some medical recipes and a paragraph beginning, 'That there is a God may be proved not only from'.. &c.; (xv) Verses by Lewis Price beginning, 'Er gwario honai yn ofer o amser i amser '..... and six verses 'Ar dryban' beginning 'beth a wneir a ha heb aya'...; (xvi) 'Tri Englyn o waith Tri ô Brydyddion i'r ysbaddan anwydog (yr hon ydoedd ar fynnydd Llanllyfni) pan ddoethont i ochel Cafod fawr o wlad dani', beginning, 'Tew-grys to dyrys ty aderyn - gwyll', in the autograph of Michael Prichard, Llanllyfni. Beneath Iolo Morganwg has written, 'Copied into Brith y Coed'; (xvii) Seven leaves (very fragile) from a seventeenth century manuscript, containing 'cywyddau' by Ieuan Dyyfi, Gruffudd Hiraethog, and Syr Ifan, written in a hand similar to parts of Cwrtmawr MS 5.; (xviii) A fragment (two leaves, mutilated) from a seventeenth century manuscript containing vaticinations by [?Taliesin] and Rhys Nanmor, in the same sequence as they are to be found in Llanstephan MS 136, 61e - 63b. The hand resembles that of (xiii) above; (xix) Verses entitled 'The Welsh Bachelour's Wish, being an Allusion to the English Doctor's. Beneath is an 'englyn' (mutilated) 'I fam y Meibion cyn Priodi', beginning, 'Rhodded Duw fy syw im'Siân - Fôn hyddy[---].' On the reverse side are some more English verses. Damaged; (xx) A leaf (?originally pp. 17-18 of some manuscript volume) containing on the one side 'Gweddiol Gan tros Blwyfe sir Gaernarfon', stanzas 19-26, and on the reverse side 'Gweddiol Gan tros Blwyfe sir Feirionydd', dated 3 Jan. 1765, stanzas 1-7.

Eight leaves of a sixteenth century manuscript containing: (a) A fragment of 'Hystoria Lucidar' beginning 'drwyr tan y dyellir y tad drwyr golini y dyellir y mab trwyr gwres y dyellir yr ysbryd glan'; (b) 'Krist kadwr wythved brenin delliedoc' by Rys nawmo [Rhys Nanmor]; (c) 'Beth y gais vn kristion or byd'... by Sion y kent; (d) 'Y verch wen o vraych anna' by Jon y kent; (e) The first 56 lines of a 'cywydd' beginning, 'Y gigfran y gan val gwydd '[Dafydd Llwyd ap Llywelyn ap Gruffudd], The last line here is 'maer wenfol yn ol oy naid'.

Three incomplete manuscripts in the autograph of Robert Vaughan, Hengwrt: (a) An alphabetical list of Welsh personal names and place-names, A-C, with some identifications. Opposite the entry 'Asser mab Efrog cadarn brenhin ynys Brydain', Iolo Morganwg has written 'Wonderful ignorance, in Mr Vaughan of Hengwrt' (22 ff., mutilated); (b) A Chronology of British History from Vortigern to Cadwaladr, followed by what Robert Vaughan terms a 'digression' repairing some errors and explaining some obscure points in the same. In it he refers to a copy of Gildas' Epistle De excidio Britanniae seen by his 'cousin Jon. Jones an antiquary of our countrey' with Sir Robert Cotton, kt and bart. There are also references to 'Coch Asaph'. This essay appears to be a draft and there is a break at p. [18], (17 ff., of which the last two are blank; unnumbered except after the break referred to); (c) A chronicle of Welsh history from 972 to 993 (incomplete). This also appears to be a draft (8 ff., of which the last three are blank).

(a) A notebook (32 pp.) in the autograph of Dafydd Jones o Drefriw, containing 'cywyddau' by Edmwnd Prys and Wiliam Cynwal and a brief account of the dispute between them, etc. The 'cywyddau' are numbered 1-3, 50-54, and 36. On the cover EW has written 'Fragments of Edmund Prys, & Wm Cynwal', and 'Iolo Morganwg ai piau';
(b & c) Loose papers containing a list of books, a statement of accounts between David Jones and Richard Lathrop, a draft title-page for 'Y Greal Bychan', and poetry by RT, etc.
