Window Tax Appeal: appellant states that at the time of passing the act (4 & 5 Wm. 4) he was assessed for 20 windows for his dwelling house in Monmouth, the remainder of the windows of the house being above as many again were stopped up with lath and plaster. After the passing of the act appellant opened up some of the windows and contends that under the 7th sec. of the act he was entitled to do so free of duty. This was objected to by the assessor.
William Williams, Newport, to Arthur Wyatt,
He suggests additional names which should be added to the committee for the hundred of Wentloog (includes the Homfrays and the Fotheringhills of the Tredegar iron works). Mr T. J. Phillips is endeavouring to get copies of the rate books. The committee for Lord Worcester meets almost daily and it will do everything within the borough that needs to be done.
William Powell, to Charles Tyler,
Would be grateful for another half dozen notices. There is a Moss Lewis who lives around the Graig area who has a freehold in Ragland. Captain [Kemeys] perhaps could find him out.
William Partridge, Committee Room, Newport, to [Thomas] Gratrex, Monmouth,
'We' are getting on splendidly. Bailey has a majority of upwards of 46. More than 474 voters have already polled. All is quiet.
William Grane, 23 Bedford Row, to Joseph Bailey M.P,
There has been no consultation with Mr Harrow since the 10th, but there was another meeting at which another counsel, supposedly Mr Piggot, attended.
William Frost, (by order of the Committee), Monmouth to Mr Maddox, Monmouth,
It is usual during contested elections, when any charge is incurred, the expense of which must be defrayed by both parties, that such party be consulted. If one party orders anything on its own then it must pay the costs itself. Since there were no hustings recipient should look for payment to those who employed him.
William Beckingham, Newport, to Powles and Tyler,
Informs recipients that he saw Thomas Jenkins in the workhouse at Abergavenny who had been there for 9-10 months. Jenkins is willing to testify that he was taken from the workhouse to Newport to vote for Hall.
William A[dams] Williams, Llangibby, to [James Powles],
He encloses a copy of the circular to non-resident voters (missing). Writer's father thinks that Owen is the best man to go to Llandogo since he has influence there.
Will of Rebecka Powell of Monmouth, spinster,
