Written at Walton Heath Golf Club, Walton-on-the Hill, Epsom. Is playing golf with Churchill. Goes to Brighton that evening. Last night's great success has made the Tories 'baffled & perplexed'. Believed that a settlement is now likely and is convinced that Balfour is anxious for this. Has private talks with Balfour the following week which are likely to yield positive results. A settlement of the Welsh Church question is likely.

Smith is anxious to settle the Lords, Home Rule and Welsh Disestablishment: 'If we can do all that it would be a mighty haul'. Had breakfast with the Bishop of St. Asaph that morning. 'So there are great things brewing. Paid a sibrwd wrth neb - ond y teulu wrth gwrs'.
Written at Queen's Hotel, Eastbourne. Have driven through the rain to see Gwilym. He had lunch at the home of Lord James of Hereford with Churchill and Masterman (near the Walton Heath Golf Links) the previous day - 'He is 82 years of age & as spruce as Uncle Lloyd - almost'. He related a store of political anecdotes about Gladstone, Chamberlain, John Bright and others. Includes note from Gwilym Lloyd George.
