Carno collection

The collection comprises property in p's Trefeglwys, Carno, Llanwnnog, Penegoes, Llanbryn-mair, and Aberbygan [?t. Aberbechan in p. Llanllwchaearn], all co. Mont. R6/2 (1714-1715) includes land tax in Tir y Mynech in p. Llanbryn-mair, and in Carno collections for 1712. R6/9 (1714-1715) includes land tax for Carno and Llanbryn-mair collections for 1713 and 1714. Collectors: Evan Jones, 1714-1716, Abraham Ellis, 1719-1725, Randle Jones, 1736-1737, and Thomas Jones, 1738-1772. For the continuation of this collection post-1772, see Collection III.

Manor of Cyfeiliog: Mathafarn estate, Rhiwsaeson estate and Tirymynych estate

The collection contains three estates, all in co. Mont.: the Mathafarn estate in p's Llanwrin, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair, Mallwyd, Machynlleth, Penegoes and Cemais; the Rhiwsaeson estate in p's Llanbryn-mair, Darowen and Llanwrin; and the Tirymynych estate in p's Penegoes, Machynlleth, Llanbryn-mair, Cemais and Llanwrin. R32/8 (1755) to R34/5 (1758) contain only the Mathafarn estate. R34/10 (1760) contains only the Rhiwsaeson estate. From R34/8 (1759) onwards the Mathafarn estate is combined with the Rhiwsaeson estate. R34/8 also contains the Tirymynych Estate. This is the only time the Tirymynych estate occurs until R41/5 (1772). R34/5 includes the Toll Book of Machynlleth Fair for May, June, July, Sept. and Nov. 1757. Lordship of Arwystli

The collection comprises property in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Maes-mawr, Trewyddan, Gwerneirin, Carnedd, Hengynwydd, Deddenydd), Carno, Llanwnnog (t's Surnant, Wig and Ystradfaelog, Esgob, Caer-sws), Trefeglwys (t's Bodaeoch, Mastregymer, Dolgwden, Glyntrefnant), Llanidloes (t's Brithdir, Glynhafren Iscoed, Treflyn and Rhydfaes, Cefncroesllwybr, Morfodion, Cilmachallt, Cefn Penarth, Ystradhunod), Llanidloes Town, Llangurig (t's Cefn (yr) hafodau, Llanifyny, Glyngynwydd, Glynhafren Uwchcoed, Glynbrochan); and the Berthllwyd estate in p's [Trefeglwys] (t's Maestregymer, Glyntrefnant), [Llanwnnog] (t's Surnant, Esgob, Uwchlaw'r Coed), Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Deddenydd, Maes-mawr) and Llangurig (t. Glyngynwydd), all co. Mont. The collectors are not named.

Much Wenlock collection

The collection comprises property in p. Much Wenlock, t. Stanwardine [p. Baschurch], and Oswestry, Shropshire. However, in RA2 & RA3 (1552/3 and 1580), several place-names are mentioned including the following: Weston Oxenbold, Shipton, Burton, Sturchley, Deuxhill, Sutton, Madeley, Presthope, Lushcot, Hatton, Stoke St Milborough, Downton, More, Caughley, Acton Round, Harley, Wigwig, Benthall, Posenhall, Atterley, Walton and Wyke, all in Shropshire. RA4 (1581) contains a rental of lands belonging to the Chantry of Wenlock, due unto Richard Modlicott, while RA5 [16 cent.?] contains a particular of all the lands belonging to the monastery of Wenlock. Collectors: Thomas Butler, vicar of Wenlock, 1643, Thomas Greene and Samuel Littlehales 1716-1718, Randle Jones, 1729-1738, John Croft, 1744-17767, and John Jones 1768-1771.

Collection II

Manor of Valle Crucis and Wrexham Abbot

Property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llansanffraid Glyn Ceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, co. Denb., is from R9/8 (1702) onwards combined with property on Llantysilio Commons, Bryneglwys Commons, Llanarmon Commons, the late lands of Nathaniel Williams in t. Wrexham Abbot, the late lands of Elias Price purchased in 1702 in t. Wrexham Abbot, and Oernant Slate Quarries. From R27/9 (1744) onwards property in p's Ruthyn, Llanfrothen is added. This had formerly been included in the Glasinfryn Collection. However, Llanfrothen is omitted from R29/9, R30/12, R40/6. It has been incorporated in R29/5 (1748), R29/6 (1748), R29/13b (1749), R29/13c (1749), R30/6 (1750), R30/9(1751), R40/11 (1772). R21/6 (1721) includes election bills. L1291 (1663), L1286b (1664) indicate that at that date the manors belonged to the Rt Hon. Baptist, Viscount Campden. Collectors: John Edwards (1702-1711), Randle Jones (1713-1748), Thomas Jones (1748-1770), Randle Jones (1772). Post 1772, property in co. Denb. is contained in Collection II and property in p. Llanfrothen in Collection I.

Rhiwgoch estate and other properties in co's Mer. and Denb.

This series of rentals combines: (1) property on the Rhiwgoch estate, acquired by Henry Wynn through his marriage with Catherine, heiress of Ellis Lloyd of Rhiwgoch, namely property in p's Trawsfynydd, Dolgellau, [Llanddwywe] (t. Is-y-graig) and Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, co. Mer.; and (2) property which had formed part of the Wynn estate in cos Mer. and Denb., namely property in p. Llandderfel in Penllyn hundred, and p's Llandrillo-yn-Edeirnion, Corwen (Ddwyryd) and Betws in Edeirnion hundred, all co. Mer., and p. Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr (t. Llysan), co. Denb. R7 (1669-1673) contains property in Trawsfynydd, Dolgellau, Llanfair-juxta-Harlech, and Abermouth only. From L1301/5 (1688) to R9/6e (1701), only property in Corwen (Ddwyryd), Betws, Llanfihangel Glyn Myfyr (t. Llysan), Llanfor and Llandrillo is included, except for R8/6 (1680) which only includes property in Llanfor and Llandrillo. Collectors: Evan Lloyd 1669-73, Griffith Roberts 1707-1718, Randle Jones 1725-1751, John Evans 1728, Thomas Jones 1752-1772. From R11/8 (1707) the Rhiwgoch estate is resumed. R17/16 (1728) omits p. Llandderfel and t. Llysan. From R30/9 (1751) onwards property in p's Llanfair-juxta-Harlech and Llandderfel are omitted. For the continuation of this collection, post 1772, see Collection I.

Glascoed, Llanforda and Plas-y-ward estates A

From 1716 onwards the combined collections of Glascoed, Llanforda, and Plas-y-ward are divided into two, A and B. Collection A comprises property in co. Denb.: p's Llansilin (t's Sycharth, Rhiwlas), Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Trefeilw, Banhadla, Tre-wern, Henfachau, Prys, Gartheryr), Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr, (Maen Gwynedd), [Glyntraean] (t. Hafodgynfor), Llangollen (t. Dinbren), Abenbury, Wrexham (t's Erlas, Acton), Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd (t's Garthgynan, Euarth, Derwen), Llanfwrog, Ruthin, Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, Llanhychan, Llandyrnog, Aberchwiler, Denbigh, Llanynys (t's Gyffylliog, Trefechan, Ysgeibion), Llangwm in commote of Dinmael, Manor of Llwynedd and Rhisgog. Property in Shropshire: p's Oswestry (t's Parc Ucha, Llanforda, Trefarclawdd, Cynhinion, Pentre-gaer, Pentrellech, Cynhinon, Trefonnen), [Llansilin] (t. Sychdyn), [Baschurch] (t. Fitchill), Weston Rhyn, Melverley. Property in co. Mer.: p's [Llanrillo] (t. Branas), [Llandderfel] (t. Betws-y-coed). From R13 (1718) onwards property in p. Holt is added. From 1716-19, some of the property in co. Denb.: p's Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Trefeiliw, Tre-wern, Prys, Gartheryr), Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr (Maen Gwynedd), Abenbury, Wrexham (t's Erlas, Acton), [Llangedwyn] (t. Sgrwgan) is to be found in R15 (1716-19). From R14 (1730-1) onwards, property in Shropshire: p. [Oswestry] (t. Maesbury), the late estate of Richard Glover of Crompwell, Shropshire, is added, and from R14 (1732-3) property in Oswestry (t's Trefarclawdd), Treflach, Swinau), the late estate of John Powell, junior, is added. From R14 (1738) onwards property in Shropshire: p. [Llanyblodwel] (t. Llynclys) and in co. Flint: p. Overton is added. Collectors: Randle Jones 1716-39, John Croft 1743-67, John Jones 1768-72. Faerdref). Property in co. Caern.: p's Penmorfa, Beddgelert, Dolwyddelan, Capel Curig, Penmachno, Llanberis, Dwygyfylchi, Llanfairfechan. R15 (1716-19) also contains property in co. Denb.: p's Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant (t's Trefeiliw, Tre-wern, Prys, Gartheryr) [Llangedwyn] (t. Sgrwgan), Llanarmon Mynydd Mawr (Maen Gwynedd), Abenbury, Wrexham (t's Erlas, Acton) which is afterwards combined with subdivision A. Collectors: John Davies, 1719-1735, Randle Jones, 1736-1738 and 1744-1745, Thomas Jones, 1739-1772, Edward Lloyd, 1741-1767, John Jones, 1768-1769, and William Owen 1770-1771. A duplicate copy of the rental for year 1719, without the co. Caern property, is to be found in NLW, Powysland Club Deposit, Parcel 27. From R21/7 (1721) onwards, with the exception of R15 (1722-5), property in Wrexham is added. R18/1 (1735) and R18/5 (1735) contain property in cos Denb. and Mont. only. R18/5 adds p. Llangedwyn and omits p. Llansilin (t. Lledrod). It also includes property from the Llanfihangel and Mochnant Collections.

Tithe rentals, co. Mont.

Tithe rents in p. Llangurig (t's Cefn (yr) hafodau, Glyngynwydd, Glynhafren, Glynbrochan, Llanifyny, Llaniwaered), p. Llanidloes (t's Cilmachallt, Brithdir, Treflyn), p. Trefeglwys (t's Esgeiredd, Glyntrefnant, Dolgwden, Faerdref), and p. Llanfair Caereinion (t's Rhosaflo, Brynelen, Cil-yr-ych, Rhiwhiriarth, Llanloddian, Bryn-glas, Dol-ged, Llanfair, Gwenynog and Pen-tyrch), all in co. Mont. With regard to the dates in this series, R47/3, for example, would contain a rental for the year 1779 (not necessarily collected in 1779). Collectors: Edward Devereux 1780, 1783-4. R51/3 (1787) contains a rental of Llanfair Caereinion tithe corn for 1787, while the remaining rentals only contain the tithes for p's Llangurig, Llanidloes and Trefeglwys. After R63/16 (1807), the tithes for p's Llangurig, Llanidloes and Trefeglwys are contained in the Arwystli collection, while rentals of p. Llanfair Caereinion tithes are contained in a separate collection.

Arwystli farm rents

Property in p's Llanidloes, Trefeglwys, Carno, Llanwnnog, Mochdre and Montgomery, co. Mont. Collector: William Jones, 1805-1808.

Chirk Castle estate

Part of the Chirk Castle estate purchased at Lady Day 1805, consisting of property in Llansilin, Llangedwyn and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, co. Denb. Collector: Samuel Lovatt. After 1809, the collection seems to be included with the Llansilin collection.

Arwystli collection

Containing farm rentals, cottage rentals, tithes, etc., concerning property in p's Llanidloes, Trefeglwys, Carno, Llanwnnog, Mochdre, Montgomery and Llangurig, co. Mont. RA24 contains a copy of the Llangurig tithe apportionment, 1843. With regard to the dates, R64/1 and R64/3, for example, would contain the Arwystli rental for the year 1808 (not necessarily collected in 1808). Collectors: William Jones, 1808-1816, William Johnes, 1817-1836, David Jones, 1837-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, Nathan Burlinson, 1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, and Owen Hughes, 1871. From 1861 onwards, only tithe rent charges (as in R116/2g) for p's Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig, together with p. Llanbryn-mair, co. Mont., are contained in this series of rentals (see also the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals described elsewhere in this catalogue). Details of other rents in p's Trefeglwys, Llanidloes and Llangurig (as in R116/2f) will be found in R117/2c, then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Property in Carno and Llanwnnog will be found in R117/2c (being a rental of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Oswestry/Llanforda estate

The collection comprises property in p. Oswestry (including t's Trefarclawdd, Maesbury, Cynhinion, Pentre-gaer, Trefonnen, Llanforda and Treflach), p. Selatyn, p. St Martin's, p. Baschurch, (t. Soughton) p. Llansilin, and Tancoedygaer, all in Shropshire. Collectors: Richard Croxon, 1809-1838, John Croxon, 1839-1851, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1860. From 1855 (R110/1a), the collection includes the Llwynmaen estate (see the Llwynymaen Estate collection, 1839-1854). After 1860, the property will be found in R116/3a, then in R117/2a, both of which are rentals of co. Salop. and co. Denb., estates of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple; then they will be found in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents

The collection comprises property in p's Penegoes, Llanwrin, Cemais, Darowen, Llanbryn-mair and Machynlleth (including t's Isygarreg and Uwchygarreg), all in co. Mont. Most of the rents were collected at Michaelmas; the date of collection is not always given. Collectors: J. Davies, 1808-1816, Samuel Hughes, 1817-1833, David Jones, 1834-1856, Joseph Owen Jones, 1856-1860, Nathan Burlinson, 1861, Thomas Adey Cox, 1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879. For details of the post-1898 rents, see the series of Tithe, Chief and Fee Farm Rentals, which contains Manor of Cyfeiliog chief rents, 1863-1918.

Wynnstay collection

The Wynnstay collection comprises property in p's Wrexham, Ruabon, Holt, Marchwiail, Erbistock, Gresford, Llangollen, Llandysilio-yn-Iâl, Llanarmon-yn-Iâl, Bryneglwys, Llansanffraid Glynceiriog, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant and Gwersyllt, co. Denb., and in p's Overton and Bangor Is-coed, co. Flint. The rentals for 1832-1834 (R87/2, R88/2 and R89/2) contain details of election disbursements. RA26 contains details of Wynnstay rents in 1848, with detailed descriptions of each property (acreages of meadow and pasture, arable and rough, houses and outbuildings, etc.). For tithe rent charges in p. Ruabon, 1830-1846 and 1847-1855, see RA23 and RA25. RA28 includes a survey of the collection, [late 1850s-early 1860s], giving field names, details of acreages and annual rent due, together with plans of some of the properties in p. Ruabon. Collectors: David Parry, 1810-1813, E. Pickering, 1814-1835, Edward Tench, 1835-1855, and Nathan Burlinson, 1856-1860. For details of this collection before 1810, see Collection II. Post-1860, most of the properties in the collection will be found in one or more of the following rentals, before they appear together once again in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents: R116/3a and R117/2a (being estates of which Sir Watkin Williams Wynn is seised in fee simple), and R116/3c and R117/2b (being settled estates). However, the Wynnstay fee farm rents contained in R115/3e, will be found post-1860 in a separate collection for Wynnstay fee farm rents 1860-1898. 'Non-Wynnstay rentals'

The 'non-Wynnstay rentals' described below (RA 30-40) are mostly strays. Where known, the reasons for their presence among the Wynnstay archives are indicated. Cross-references are given where there appear to be links between 'non-Wynnstay rentals' and the general series. Included with the 'non-Wynnstay rentals' described below are stray rentals which are to be found in the general series (R 3/3-5 and R 3/10-12).
