Papers relating to various aspects of county administration in Merioneth, specifically revenues, 1590x[1626], the sheriff, 1596-1706, Quarter Sessions and Justices of the Peace, 1624-1792; deputy lieutenant, 1674-1703; and custos rotulorum, 1674-1703.

Mine rents and royalties

The collection comprises mines and quarries in cos Denb., Mont., Mer., and Salop. The mines and quarries are named but not the parishes in which they are situated. The rents specified below were due at various times throughout the year. Collector: Owen Hughes, 1877-1880. Mining and quarrying papers

Papers relating to the mining of lead, coal and slate on parts of the Wynnstay estate, at Plas Issa Colliery, Denbighshire, 1814-1827, Cafartha, Van, Snowbrook, etc. lead mines, Montgomeryshire, (Watermark 1853)-1886, Trefonnen Colliery, Oswestry, 1873-1883, and various quarries in Montgomeryshire and Caernarfonshire, 1882-1886.

Misc. Denbighshire deeds,

Miscellaneous Denbighshire deeds which may be relevant to the Wynnstay estate, although in some cases the connection is tenuous or unclear. They comprise a quitclaim of rights, dues and taxes by Robert Earl of Leicester, [?1563x1565]; a bond relating to a grant of the rectories of Chirk, Llansanffraid, Llandysilio and Bryneglwys, 1588; grant of an annuity to Sir Robert Salesbury, 1598, recovery of the manor of Llanegwest, Denbighshire rents and rectorial tithes, 1664-1668/9; and a copy will of Sir Thomas Myddelton, 1680.

Miscellaneous deeds belonging to the Glascoed estate, comprising estates in Merioneth and Montgomeryshire, 1636, and tenements in Cedewain, 1642.

Miscellaneous deeds and documents relating to the Earl of Arundel’s lands in Wales [tentatively placed here], the estates of Pentyrch and Glanyrafon, and the Caernarfonshire estate of Sir Richard Wynn, 1342, 1538, 1612-1639, 1771; deeds for properties in Llangian, Llaniestyn, Edern, etc., 1559-1615; and purchase deeds for a portion of the Gwydir estate, acquired by Sir John Wynn of Watstay, 1680-1681.

Fields and unnamed properties generally have not been included in the file descriptions.

Miscellaneous draft conveyances to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and his trustees, Edward James Earl of Powis and Hugh Williams, of houses and lands purchased, exchanged or mortgaged, mainly in the parish and townships of Ruabon but also including properties in Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Wrexham and elsewhere in Denbighshire, Llangurig in Montgomeryshire, and Llanuwchllyn and other parishes in Merioneth, 1842-1865. There is also an abstract of title to the Llwyn-y-maen and Horseley estates in Salop and Flintshire respectively, 1752-1782.
