Llanymawddwy, title deeds,

Title deeds, mainly relating to properties in the township of Cywarch, and a smaller number in Pennant, in the parish of Llanymawddwy. Many of the properties were purchased by Gruffith and Charles Kyffin of Cae Coch and Cyffin, Montgomeryshire. The deeds contain evidence for the practice of transhumance in this area of Merioneth, as several of the properties included a hafodty or summer house.

Llanynys, Ruthin and other parishes, title deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties mainly in the parishes of Llanynys and Ruthin, but also in other nearby parishes; some had belonged to the Thelwall family of Plas y Ward and others had been purchased by Sir Watkin Williams Wynn in the eighteenth century. Some of the bundles are original, recording the acquisition of the lands in both parishes which formed the core of the Plas y Ward estate in the early fifteenth century and subsequent leases by the Thelwall family. Many of the early deeds for Ruthin supply the names of streets, landmarks and castle officials, showing the development and occupation of the town during the late medieval and Tudor periods. Llwydiarth estate

Llwydiarth estate comprises property in p's Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa (t's Llwydiarth, Fach-wen, Cadwnfa, Garth Uchaf, Cefncleisiog, Rhiwlas, Halfen, Dolwar, Farchwel, Nantycyndy, Llaethbwlch), Llangadfan (t's Cyffin, Bryngwaeddan, Llangadfan, Blowty, Moelfeliarth), Llanfair Caereinion (t's Gwenynog, Llanfair, Pen-tyrch, Dol-ged, Llanloddian Isaf and Uchaf, Rhiwhiriarth, Rhosaflo, Peniarth, Bryn-glas, Brynelen), Llangynyw (t's Cynhinfa, Gwenynog), Llanerfyl (t's Cefn-llys-isaf and Cefn-llys-uchaf, Cnewyll, Craen, Coetalog), Manafon (t. Dwyriw), Llanwyddelan (t. Treganol), Garthbeibio, Llanwddyn, Llanllugan and Welshpool, all in co. Mont. Llanfair Caereinion tithes are included to R70/7 (1815); for Llanfair Caereinion tithes, 1815-1861, see collection entitled Llanfair Caereinion Tithes. Chief rents for p's Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa (t's Rhiwlas, Dolwar, Cadwnfa), Llanwddyn (t. Garthbwlch) and Llansanffraid [?-ym-Mechain], co. Mont., are included from R99 to R116 (1844-1861). Collectors: E. Lewis, 1809-1815, Thomas Hartley, 1816, Samuel Hughes, 1818-1834, David Jones, 1835-1857, Joseph Owen Jones, 1857-1861. After 1861, property in p's Llangadfan, Llanfair Caereinion, Llanerfyl, Garthbeibio, Llanwddyn and Llanfihangel-yng-Ngwynfa, will be found in R117/2c (being a rental of settled estates in cos Denb. and Mont.), then in the collection entitled Farm and Cottage Rents. Llwydiarth estate

Sir Watkin Williams Wynn (d. 1749) acquired the Llwydiarth estate in 1715 through his marriage with Ann, daughter and heiress of Edward Vaughan of Llwydiarth. The rents of the estate are divided into the following collections: (1) Llanfihangel collection, (2) Mochnant collection, (3) Llangedwyn collection, and (4) Llanfair collection. Arranged into the Llanfihangel, Mochnant, and Llangedwyn collections as one entity; and the Llanfair collection on its own as another. Post 1772, the collections continue as follows: Llanfihangel collection to Collection III; Mochnant collection to Collection I; Llangedwyn collection to Collections I and IV; Llanfair collection (co. Mont.) to Collection III; Llanfair collection (p. Mallwyd, co. Mer.) to Collection I.

Llwynymaen estate

The Llwynymaen estate collection comprises property in t's Trefarclawdd and Llanforda, p. Oswestry, Shropshire. Collectors: Richard Jones Croxon, 1839-1843, John Croxon, 1844-1851, and Nathan Burlinson 1852-1854. Post-1854, the above estate has not been numbered separately, but, rather, is included with the collection entitled Oswestry or Llanforda estate.

Llysfaen title deeds,

Title deeds for properties in the parish of Llysfaen in Caernarfonshire, acquired by Sir John Wynn of Gwydir through purchase and assignment from the descendants of Gruffith ap David ap Eingion, Hugh Lloyd and others. The files refer to a messuage in Llysfaen and Is-y-ffordd, 1563-1625; escheated lands in Llysfaen and Pen-maen, 1575; Kay Ffynnon y Gollen and Erw’r Onnen in Is-y-ffordd, 1590-1625; Parke, etc, Pennal, Eirias and Pen-maen, 1594-1610; Tythyn John Lewis ap Jeffrey in Pant, 1594-1616; Pwll Morkyn, Acker Lwyd, parcels in Tu Mawr, etc, Pen-maen, 1613, 1670; Llwyn Tervyn, Erow’r Person and Y Kyttyr, alias Kay’r Perthy in Llysfaen, 1619.

London and Middlesex title deeds,

Title deeds relating to properties in London and Middlesex, of which several refer to Sir Richard Wynn, treasurer to Queen Henrietta Maria. The files describe Shepton, Middlesex, 1634; leases of miscellaneous London properties, 1634-1765; deeds and documents for London properties of Sir Richard Wynn, 1638-1650; the Manor of Wicke and Chapel of All Angels, Isleworth and Brentford, 1638-1653; Hammersmith and Holborn, 1695-1701; Tottenham High Cross, 1778; and the Ancient Music Concert Room, St. Pancras, 1785.

London, Gray’s Inn chambers, title deeds and related documents,

Documents relating to chambers in Gray’s Inn, London, 1623-1694, being mostly leases made following a 60-year grant to Sir William Denny in 1628 for the purpose of extending the building, subsequently known as Denny’s Building, Holborn Court. The files comprise leases, 1623-1647; papers to prove title, 1642-1672; leases, 1651-1668; orders of the pension, receipts, etc., 1651-1685; leases, 1669-1694; and a covenant for payment of an annuity, 1688. The documents reveal much about the structure, layout, furnishings and tenants of the buildings.

Loose letters and associated Wynnstay papers

Loose letters and other associated papers accumulated by the office of Longueville and Co. relating to the Wynnstay estate, 1777-1948. The letters, mostly incoming, are from the Wynnstay estate agents, other solicitors, land agents and valuers, vendors and purchasers, tenants, members of the Williams Wynn family and the trustees. The contents reflect the routine work of the solicitors’ practice, referring to Wynnstay estate sales and purchases; property leases; mining and mineral rights; financial management under the Wynnstay family trusts; and sporting rights. Some files relate to particular topics such as Rhosllanerchrugog coal mines, 1785, 1859-1879; the sale of the manor of Stanwardine and purchase of Plas Ucha, 1805-1818; West Wye Valley Mine, etc. 1858-1914; crown rents, 1860-1881; the life policy of Sarah Sealy, 1868; clay extraction at Gwersyllt 1883-1884; letters of W.W. Wynne to Rev. George Williams, 1901; and the estate of Arthur Watkin Williams Wynn, deceased, 1948.

Lordship of Arwystli

The collection comprises property in p's Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Maes-mawr, Trewyddan, Gwerneirin, Carnedd, Hengynwydd, Deddenydd), Carno, Llanwnnog (t's Surnant, Wig and Ystradfaelog, Esgob, Caer-sws), Trefeglwys (t's Bodaeoch, Mastregymer, Dolgwden, Glyntrefnant), Llanidloes (t's Brithdir, Glynhafren Iscoed, Treflyn and Rhydfaes, Cefncroesllwybr, Morfodion, Cilmachallt, Cefn Penarth, Ystradhunod), Llanidloes Town, Llangurig (t's Cefn (yr) hafodau, Llanifyny, Glyngynwydd, Glynhafren Uwchcoed, Glynbrochan); and the Berthllwyd estate in p's [Trefeglwys] (t's Maestregymer, Glyntrefnant), [Llanwnnog] (t's Surnant, Esgob, Uwchlaw'r Coed), Penystrywaid, Llandinam (t's Deddenydd, Maes-mawr) and Llangurig (t. Glyngynwydd), all co. Mont. The collectors are not named.

Lordship of Cynllaith Owain chief rents

The collection comprises property in p's Llansilin (t's Lloran, Moelfre, Estynallan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas) and [Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog] (t. Llywarch), all in co. Denb. Collectors: John Humphreys, 1719, Peter Lloyd, 1725-1726, Randle Jones, 1736-1738, and Thomas Jones, 1739-1772. For the continuation of this collection post-1772, see Collection IV.

Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents

The Lordship/Manor of Cynllaith Owain chief rents collection comprises property in p. Llansilin, co. Denb., including t's Llansilin, Lloran, Moelfre, Estynllan, Priddbwll, Sycharth, Rhiwlas and Bodlith. From R64 to R92, 1808-1835, some cottage and enclosure rents are included with the chief rents, but chief rents only appear in the rentals from R94 to R151, 1837-1896. The rents are collected at Michaelmas, not Lady Day. Collectors: Samuel Lovett, 1808-1835, John Croxon, 1841-1842, Nathan Burlinson, 1852-1862, William Jones, 1863-1871, Owen Hughes, 1871-1879. Lordships of Arwystli and Cyfeiliog, Cyfeiliog (Mathafarn) estate and Talerddig, title deeds,

Title deeds recording the acquisition of the lordships or manors of Arwystli and Cyfeiliog by Sir Thomas Myddelton and subsequently the Vaughan family of Llwydiarth, the grant of the lordship of Cyfeiliog to the Pugh family of Mathafarn, and deeds of the Purcell family of Dinthill and Nantcriba relating to the manor of Talerddig. The files comprise Arwystli and Cyfeiliog, 1593-1698; Cyfeiliog (Mathafarn estate), 1664-1708; and Talerddig, 1567-1562.

Machynlleth, title deeds,

Title deeds relating to Bryngwyn, alias Tyddin y Chwirne, etc. and Llyest yn Bwlch Hyddgen in the township of Uwchygarreg and parish of Machynlleth, 1594-1690; and properties in the town of Machynlleth, 1774-1779.

Maenan lordship

The Maenan lordship collection comprises property in p's Eglwysfach, Llansanffraid Glan Conwy, Llangernyw, and Llysfaen (ecclesiastical parish in Llandrillo-yn-Rhos), cos Denb. & Caern. With regard to the dates in this series, R64/12 (1809) would contain a rental for the year 1809, rather than a rental collected at Lady Day 1809. This pattern has been followed throughout this collection, since some of the rents are collected at Lady Day, others at Michaelmas, while the dates of others are not given. Collectors: William Williams, 1809-1823, John Maughan, 1824-1838, and Thomas Turnor, 1839-1857.

Maenan lordship and other properties in co's Caern and Denb.

Maenan lordship, co. Caern, and properties in p's Eglwys-bach and Llangernyw, co. Denb., are combined from 1683 (L1301) with property in p's Llansanffraid Glan Conwy and Betws Abergele, co. Denb., and p. Penmachno, co. Caern. Property purchased from William Robinson, esq., in p's Llansanffraid Glan Conwy and Llandrillo-yn-Rhos (t. Eirias) is added in 1691 (R8/9). A property in Wrexham is also added from 1684 (L1301) to 1691 (R8/9). R3/5 (1629), R6/7 (1671), R4/7 (1671) and R4/9 (1680) contain property in Commote of Isaf.
