Papers relating to private family interests,

Papers relating to the intellectual and social interests of the Williams Wynn family or their relations by marriage, comprising catechisms, [17th cent, first ½]; printed almanacs, 1656; a manuscript notebook of Edward Lhuyd, 1698-1699; and the Llangedwyn Club book, 1797-1799.

Miscellaneous estate administration papers,

Papers deriving from the administration of miscellaneous estates belonging to Wynnstay and occasionally other estates, comprising loose estate accounts, 1682-1854; a survey of estates of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 1777; Llanuwchllyn and Ruabon searches (Augmentation Office), 1789; abstracts of leases, 1790; an account book of John Mytton, 1817-1819; tenancy agreements (non-Wynnstay estates), [1850x1859]-1911; a horse hire agreement, 1859, posters concerning amendments to salmon fishing laws, 1861, and woodward’s returns, 1893-1898.

Vouchers

The general series of vouchers consists of vouchers relating to accounts found in the general series of rentals R119-R153 (1864-1899) and account books Ai 1-2 (1900-1902). Indexes to the vouchers for the period 1878-1919 are available in series Vig. The vouchers are bound in volumes. These volumes may be as much as 12" thick and one may weigh perhaps 20lb.

Trusts involving Sir John Wynn,

Trusts involving Sir John Wynn of Gwydir and Watstay, concerning payment to Thomas and Sarah Povey, 1665-1673, payment of his own debts, 1681, the will of Robert Lord Viscount Cholmondeley, 1682, and the will of Sir Robert Owen, 1696-1698.

Non-Wynnstay trusts

Papers relating to other estates and families for whom the Williams Wynn family acted as trustees, namely the Wynne family of Peniarth, Merioneth, 1846-1881, the Rug estate, 1868-1874, and the Cornwallis West family, 1870.

Miscellaneous deeds (Wales and Salop)

Miscellaneous draft conveyances to Sir Watkin Williams Wynn and his trustees, Edward James Earl of Powis and Hugh Williams, of houses and lands purchased, exchanged or mortgaged, mainly in the parish and townships of Ruabon but also including properties in Llangedwyn, Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, Wrexham and elsewhere in Denbighshire, Llangurig in Montgomeryshire, and Llanuwchllyn and other parishes in Merioneth, 1842-1865. There is also an abstract of title to the Llwyn-y-maen and Horseley estates in Salop and Flintshire respectively, 1752-1782.

Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire deeds and documents

Conveyances, agreements, particulars, conditions of sale and other documents relating to the sale of parts of the Wynnstay estates in Caernarfonshire and Denbighshire, 1853-1921, and the estate timber, 1853[x1870]. The lands included the Maenan estate, 1856-1858, and part of the Cefn estate, sold for building development in Colwyn Bay and Llysfaen, 1891-1921.

Title deeds relating to properties in Shropshire. The files describe the parishes and/or manors of Acton Scott – Colemere, 1723-1809; Condover, 1697-1742; Cound – Lydbury North, [pre-1290], 1418, 1460, 1620-1787; Meole Brace, 1592-1772; Moreton Corbett and Newport, 1719, 1763; Pontesbury and Westbury (Cruckton, Horton, Oldbury, Yockleston, etc.), 1612-1768; Pulverbatch –Selatyn, 1692-1734; Stretton in the Dale, 1728-1807; Tong – Wollerton, 1605-1824; Worthen and Trelystan, 1562-1771; Wroxeter, 1588; Yockleton and Stretton, 1636-1742; and miscellaneous Shropshire deeds, 1715-1740.

Lincolnshire title deeds,

Title deeds relating to Lincolnshire, mostly in connection with the grant by Queen Henrietta Maria to Sir Richard Wynn of lands in Coggisland, Alderland, part of the dissolved Abbey of Croyland, South and North Fens in the manors of Spalding, Pinchbeck, Weston and Moulton, and Deeping Fen, comprising an original deed box, 1635-1637, and further separate deeds, 1635-1653; there is also a much later deed of covenant concerning lands in Davenport, Middle Raisen, 1814.

Stray bonds,

Bonds, recognizances in the nature of a statute merchant or statute staple, etc. separated from other documents with which they once belonged. They relate mainly to payments of debts, appearances in court, covenants in title deeds or obedience to arbitration awards. A large proportion of them concerns the Thelwall family of Plas y Ward. They are listed as "a bundle of old bonds", 1489-1669; miscellaneous bonds, 1518-1613; bonds for payment, recognizances, etc., 1520-1682; a parcel of "old bonds", 1554-1687; bonds for performance of covenants, 1614-1698; bonds of Sir Richard Wynn and Sir John Wynn of Gwydir, 1619-1638. and bonds for payments for Caernarfonshire rectories, 1624-1631.

Schedules and abstracts of deeds,

Volumes containing original schedules of deeds compiled by the estate in 1710-1822, 1740-1789, 1770, and 1817, together with loose schedules and abstracts of deeds, [early 17th cent]-[c. 1910]. The original volumes list family settlements, wills and title deeds for estates gained though inheritance, marriage or purchase, although the order of the contents changes according to the cataloguing system adopted by the estate at the time. The total date range of deeds described in these schedules covers 1185-1910.

Title deeds for properties in Oswestry, comprising early deeds, [post-1290]-1382; miscellaneous properties in the town and parish, 1521-1630; Maes Aberglas and miscellaneous deeds, 1648-1711; Park Uchaf, 1664-1691; Owestry lordship and parish, 1684-1790; a tithe barn, 1774; Bailey Street, 1561-1681; Beatrice Street, 1782; Church Street, 1313-1656; Church Street, 1503-[18th cent, 1st half]; Church Street, 1652-1657; Church Street, 1663-1774; Brick House, Church Street, 1770; Church Street, 1777; Cross Street, 1577-1690; Cross Street, 1655-1697; Mill Street, 1568-1569; Willow Street and miscellaneous other streets, 1657-1762. Many of the deeds record property boundaries, landmarks and the occupations of various individuals, giving a detailed view of post-mediaeval Oswestry.

Oswestry (Trefonnen) and Llansilin, estate of Richard Edwards, etc., title deeds,

Title deeds for properties in the townships of Trefonnen, Trefarclawdd, Treflach, etc., in various named streets in Oswestry, and in Sychdyn, Llansilin. Many of them are known to have belonged to the estate of Richard Edwards of Trefonnen. The files describe the lands of Richard ap Hugyn, Y Garthe, etc., 1416-1594; miscellaneous properties in Trefonnen, 1552-1634; Ty ym Hen y Lan, lands in Maes y Myver, etc., 1561-1604; the capital messuage of Trefonnen and lands in Trefarclawdd, Sweeney and Sychdyn, 1606-1618; lands in Trefonnen, Treflach, and Trefarclawdd, purchased from the Thelwall family, 1614-1654; Maes Pwll Helig, Erw yr Gwynt, etc., 1625-1642; the will of Richard Edwards, 1647; the purchase by Watkin Kyffin of the capital messuage of Trefonnen, Pentre yr Hyven, etc., 1649-1663; Trefonnen, Trefarclawdd, Bailey Street and Church Street, 1649-1744; Erw Fedw, etc, 1671-1696; Moilith Farm, 1723-1771; the purchase of two houses, 1747-1766; and Trefonnen, Trefarclawdd and Oswestry town, 1788, 1820.

Title deeds for properties in the town and parish of Shrewsbury, in Castle Foregate, Meryvans Street, Corvisers’ Row, High Street, 1564-1680; St Chad, 1564-1778; Frankwell, 1578-1727; Whitley Hall, Benthall and Allesley estates, 1583-1773; Barker Street and Knockin Street, 1597-1674; Clarimond Hill, 1602, 1762; Fish Street alias Milk Street, 1603-1792; miscellaneous properties in Shrewsbury, 1604-1791; Coleham, Sturreyes Close, Abbey Foregate, etc., 1618-1692; a shop in High Street and stable in Rowshill Lane, 1629-1761; properties of the Nicolls family in St Mary and St Chad, 1634-1745; Abbey Foregate, 1730-1744; shops adjoining the guild hall, St Chad, 1748-1755; and Wyle Cop, 1762-1767. The deeds are highly informative for street names, inhabitants and buildings which have since been altered or demolished. Some of the deeds, at least, may have derived from the Purcell estate or the Mytton estate (see Wynnstay rental RA38).
