A volume containing recipes, household and medicinal but mainly relating to the craft of bookbinding (ff. 5-10); a list of books lent, 1827-1837, from an unspecified library, with observations on their condition (inverted text ff. 44 verso-7 verso); notes on the rudiments of music (ff. 2-4, originally pasted together onto f. 1); with late nineteenth and early twentieth-century additions by William Morris, Cydweli.

A collection of poems, medical and veterinary recipes, and miscellanea entitled 'Ail Biser Sioned sef Casgliad Cadwalader Davies [Gwyddelwern] wrth ei bleser . . .', with some additions. The poems include 'carolau', 'cerddi', 'cywyddau' and 'englynion' by Hugh Morys, Dafydd Nanmor, Maredudd ap Rhys, William Wynne, John [Siôn] Cadwaladr, Jonathan Hughes, Lewis Morris ('Llywelyn Ddu'), Ellis Roberts, Rees Ellis, Roger Thomley, Ellis Cadwaladr, Matthew Owen, Edmwnd Prys, Dafydd Manuel and others. A valentine from Cadwaladr Davies to Jane Jones is dated 14 February 1749.

Notebook, 1834-1861, of the Rev. Evan David, Y Groes-faen, Llantrisant, Glamorgan, containing sermons; accounts and other particulars, 1845-1856, relating to Fforest-fawr and other farms in the Llantrisant area (ff. 6-9, 10 verso-11 verso, 14-15); medical and domestic recipes (ff. 5, inverted text 59 recto-verso); and a list of those pledging themselves to total abstinence (inverted text ff. 51 recto-verso, 52 verso). A newspaper account of the funeral of Evan David is on f. 70 verso.

Three holograph letters of F. (Fanny) Humphreys (aft. Davies) [i.e., Frances, wife of Robert Joseph Davies, Cwrt-mawr, Llangeitho, co. Cardigan] from London, Edinburgh, and Cwrtmawr, to Mrs. Lewis [? her aunt Mary Lewis, Carmarthen], [18]61-1871 (personal, news of relatives and friends, the writer's wedding and honeymoon, the purchase of crockery, etc.); a list of persons present at the wedding of Frances Humphreys and R. J. Davies, 1863; a copy of a prescription issued to Frances Davies by Dr. Simpson, Edinburgh, 1863; and a card announcing the birth, 15 April 1871, to Mrs. R. J. Davies of a son [John Humphreys Davies, Principal of University College of Wales, Aberystwyth].

Six manuscript leaves extracted during rebinding from a copy in the Evan D. Jones Library of Henry Perry: Eglvryn Phraethineb . . . (Llundain, 1595). They contain an incomplete 'cywydd marwnad'('Och frwydyr awch fu rydost . . .') written circa 1662; verses by Llowarch hen; 'Henwav Arglwydd', 'Henwav brwydr', 'Henwav gwayw', 'Henwav arfav am wr', 'Henwav baner', and 'Henwav pob pethav teg'; 'englynion'; and medical recipes.

Medical and other recipes compiled by John Elliss, Skinner Street, Aberystwyth, during the period 1840-1857.

A medical student's notebook, [?1860s], containing mostly medical notes and medicinal recipes.
The volume includes notes on scarlet fever (f. 30 recto-verso), on typhoid fever, taken mostly from Thomas Hawkes Tanner's Manual of the Practice of Medicine (see 5th edn (London, 1965), pp. 166-171) (ff. 35 verso-38 verso), and on the pelvic bones and female regenerative organs, taken from Fleetwood Churchill's On the Theory and Practice of Midwifery (see 3rd edn (London and Dublin, 1855), pp. 2-52 passim) (ff. 40 verso-62); as well as general 'Notes on Clinical Surgery', concerning bone fractures and various other conditions, with repeated references to Drs Cameron and Morton (ff. 67-79). Also included are medicinal recipes for stimulants, tonics, alteratives and antacids (ff. 32 verso-34 verso); extracts from the 'Royal Free Hospital Pharmacopoe[i]a' (ff. 63-66 verso, Latin); and horse and cattle medicines (ff. 25-28).

Williams, and scraps of anonymous and incomplete poems; a holograph letter from [John Williams, Llangernyw] 'Llenor o'r Llwyni', to 'G[wilym] Cowlyd', undated (the addressee's last letter to the writer)'; and a medical recipe.

A commonplace book of the Reverend Thomas Richards (1754-1837), vicar of Darowen containing 'An Extract out of Bishop [William] Beveridge's Exposition on the XXXIX Articles of the Church of England'; household and medical recipes from printed sources; transcripts by Mary Richard [Darowen] of letters, undated, from D[avid] Richards, Llansilin to the Reverend David Hughes, rector of Llanfyllin, and [ ] (Bible Association meetings at Llansilin); autobiographical data by Thomas Richards, 1754-1819; a topographical dictionary of English and Welsh counties; a transcript of the Thirty-Nine Articles of Faith of the Church of England; a journal and account book of Thomas Richards, 1782-92 (with gaps) (incorporating notes of sermons by D[aniel] Rowland, Llangeitho); poetry by Cadwalader Dafydd ('o Lanymowddwy') and David Ellis ('y Gof' ? A volume originally used fairly extensively by Thomas Richards, Darowen as a rentroll of tithes set in the parish of Darowen, 1824-31. Beginning at the end, also in the hand of Thomas Richards, are a note from the Shrewsbury Chronicle, 1829, on the 'Rearing of Apple Trees'; medical, veterinary and household recipes; and accounts of receipts and disbursements (tithes, road rates, rents, etc.) of Thomas Richards, 1827-31. The remainder of the volume was used by Mary Richards, circa 1850-4, to record transcripts of a list of books in the library of Thomas Richards, Darowen; letters from Evan Richards to Thomas Richard[s], curate of Eglwys fach, near Dovy furnace, undated (religious meditations, a pocket Bible), Ch. Meyer, Llanrhaiadr [ym Mochnant], to T[homas] Richards, Llangynyw, undated (news of W. Davies ['Gwallter Mechain'], an invitation to the recipient and Arthur [James] John[e]s), Thos Jones, L[eintwar]dine [aft. of Creaton], to Thos. One of the sources quoted by Mary Richards is a manuscript of Sir Thomas Llwyd, 'Person Cemes, Sir Drefaldwyn'. The outside upper cover is inscribed '1825 Tithe Book'.

An incomplete manuscript of texts and tables on astrology and witchcraft and medical and other recipes in the hand of 'Dauidd Dafis', 1804. The following are some examples of the titles included in the volume - '... y Deuddeg Arwydd', '[D]rych wynebau', 'Tabl i wybod pa Flauned a Riwlia Bob awr Dros Byth', 'Hyfforddiad i alw Ffasiwn ar ysbrydion a elwir Tylwyth Teg', 'Y Ffordd ar modd I gaul Trysor giddiedig a ffotho wedi Ei gadw oddiwrth iws Dun', 'Ffordd i alw math ar ysbryd a elwir ysbryd Brestt', 'y Ffordd i Ddwad i hyd i Leider a Ddygo Riwbeth oddi arnoch chwi ...', 'ffordd i wneudd Temting Powder i Beri Cariad', 'Dyma Ddeuddeg rhinwedd Croen neider', '... y Graddau', 'Dyma Deyrnasiad y plaunedau', 'Rhod Pithaoras', 'L[l]yfr Ew. Daflus i adnabod Dun wrth i wyneb...', etc. The manuscript is imperfect at the beginning (pp. 1-12 wanting) and probably also at the end (pp. [74] - ). There is a fragment of a late 19th century transcript in the form of an insert, and also three charms in other hands which have been bound into the volume.

The file comprises remedies for human ailments, instructions for making soap and other cosmetics, 1759-1810.

An eighteenth century manuscript consisting of miscellaneous material in the hand of the Reverend Edward Gamage [rector of the parish of St. Athan, co. Glamorgan, 1717-1734] with additions in later eighteenth century hands (see TLLM, tt. 106-07; IM, t. 309; and IMCY, tt. 58-60, 68, 171). In Edward Gamage's own hand are transcripts of Welsh strict- and free-metre poems by Thomas Morgan 'o Dilla garw', Hopkin y Gwaedd 'o Fargam', Rob. Tho[ma]s 'o Sant y Bryd', Thomas Leyshon o'r Prysg', Miles W[illia]m, Thomas W[ilia]m 'o Dregolwyn', Thomas Llewelyn, vicar of Llancarvan, Dafydd Thomas 'o blwyf y Bettws', and Llewelyn ab Iefan, a copy of a letter in Welsh, 23 November 1726, from the said Edward Gamage himself from Sant Athan, to Llewelyn ab Iefan of the parish of Llangrallo [co. Glamorgan], poet, in reply to a request for genealogical information relating to the Stradling family, and, at the reverse end of the volume, 'A Continuation of ye Exposition of ye Church Catechism for ye use of ye Children of ye Parish of Lantwitt Major by E. Gamage, Lecturer and Catechist there', a recipe for a dog bite, and ? sermon notes. Later additions to the volume include transcripts of three stanzas of Welsh verse, one being by Ph'p Morgan b'r Sarnfawr' and one by his daughter Eleanor, miscellaneous English verse some dated 1768, and a few financial items. Four imperfect, printed leaves from a ? seventeenth century edition of metrical psalms with prayers for use in private houses have been bound in at the end of the volume.

Miscellaneous papers in the hand of Edward Williams ('Iolo Morganwg') bound together in one volume. The contents include pp. 11- 36, a draft version of the essay 'A short review of the present state of Welsh MSS.' which appeared as a preface to The Myvyrian Archaiology of Wales . . ., vol. Interspersed amongst the above items are miscellaneous Welsh verse, lists or groups of Welsh words often with English definitions or explanatory notes, grammatical or etymological notes, etc. In one instance notes have been written on the blank sides of an incomplete copy of Herbert Croft's printed proposals, 1792, for publishing an English dictionary based upon that of Samuel Johnson, and in another on the blank verso of a broadsheet containing a copy of a Latin inscription found in the parish of Gelligaer, co. Glamorgan, with a Welsh translation thereof.
