History
Calcutta was founded as a trading settlement by Job Charnock, the Company’s agent in Hughli, in 1690. In 1697 its fort (Fort William) was built to defend it and Calcutta developed into the East India Company’s headquarters in Bengal. Its government was vested in a council or board and various courts of justice.
