David Harries (1933-2003), composer, was born in Portsmouth to Welsh parents on the 24th March, 1933 and spent most of his life in Wales, attending Pembroke Grammar School. In 1952 his Introduction and Allegro Scherzoso for String Quintet was awarded a prize at the National Eisteddfod of Wales, Aberystwyth, and he successfully gained a Robert Bryan Music Scholarship to study Music at University College Wales, Aberystwyth, graduating in 1954. Following this, he taught at Ounsdale School, Staffordshire, and then at Milford Haven Grammar School before being appointed Lecturer and then Senior Lecturer at Aberystwyth and joining the staff of the Welsh College of Music and Drama in 1975. He continued to compose until the 1990s. He died on 7th January, 2003. Several of his compositions were published including his Opus 18, Violin Concerto (Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1965); Opus 24 No.1, Christ Child: Christmas Carol (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1967); Opus 23, A Little Cantata: Ten Traditional Rhymes Set to Music (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1968); Opus 24 No.2, O Come Let us Sing Unto the Lord, Psalm 95 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1968); Opus 26, Four Impromptus For Piano (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1969); Opus 25 No.2, Capriccio For Piano Duet (Llys Yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol, 1976); and Opus 35, Make Haste So To Live: Anthem for Chorus and Organ (Samuel King Choral Series, 1992).
