Note
Gwen John was a Welsh-born artist who lived and worked in France for most of her career, her paintings being mainly portraits of women and cats. Although overshadowed in her lifetime by that of her brother Augustus and her mentor and lover the sculptor Auguste Rodin, awareness and esteem for her work has grown considerably since her death.
