Biographical history
Roedd William Cosslett (Gwilym Elian, 1831-1904), yn swyddog glofa a bardd. Fe'i ganed yn Nantyceisiaid, Machen, sir Fynwy, yn fab i Walter Cosslett (m. 1879). Roedd ei frodyr Coslett Coslett (Carnelian), Thomas Coslett (Y Gwyliedydd Bach) a Cyrus Coslett (Talelian) hefyd yn feirdd. Priododd Mary Ann Thomas (m. 1896) ym 1855. Erbyn y 1850au roedd yn byw yn y Groeswen, ac yn ddiweddarach yn Hendredenny a Chaerffili, i gyd ym mhlwyf Eglwysilan (Eglwys Elian), Morgannwg. Gyda'i frawd Carnelian roedd yn aelod o'r cylch o feirdd 'Clic y Bont' ym Mhontypridd. Enillodd nifer o gadeiriau eisteddfodol ond ni chafodd lwyddiant yn yr Eisteddfod Genedlaethol. Bu farw 22 Medi 1904 yng Nghaerffili.

Poems by William Cosslett (Gwilym Elian), mainly submitted for competition at eisteddfodau. The subjects include elegies on Alfred Homfray, 1862, W. Thomas, Y Gelli, Thomas James [sic] (Glan Alun), Mr. and Mrs. William Smith, 1903, and David Price, Blaina; eulogies of Messrs. Talbot and Vivian, 1864, Richard Hughes, Morriston, 1870, Dr. Henry Davies, 1872, John Glasbrook, Swansea, 1872, and Evan Williams, Nantgarw; an ode - 'Caradog yn Rhufain', 1873; a collection entitled 'Blodau Elian' intended for publication; a poem 'Mae ffordd i ladd ci heb ei grogi' by Thomas Williams (Brynfab); 'Gwladgarwch' by Lewis William Lewis (Llew Llwyfo); and 'Cymru Newydd' by C. Tawelfryn Thomas.
