Archival history

Frequent marginal notes referring to the text by the scribe, by another hand, [16 cent., second ½], and also by John Dee (1527-1608 or 1609), who probably added his annotations between 1574 and 1580. The manuscript is listed as DM1 in Julian Roberts & Andrew Watson, John Dee's Library Catalogue (London, 1990). Perhaps acquired by Dee during his tour in eastern Wales and the Marches in 1574; the remains of his library were finally dispersed in 1626 or 1627. 'No. 22' in pencil inside front cover; MS 24 in Thomas Phillipps's 1837 printed catalogue of Porkington MSS, corrected to 22 by W. W. E. Wynne in the revised version of the catalogue (Brogyntyn MS I.23); not listed in the Second Report of the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts (London, 1874). A letter, 1893, from Walter de Gray Birch to Lord Harlech [William Richard Ormsby-Gore, 2nd baron Harlech], concerning the repair of Brogyntyn manuscripts at the British Museum, is now attached to f. 38.
