A transcript of the following correspondence: five letters exchanged between Geo[rge] Meares, Dollys [near Llanidloes], and Thomas Edmund Marsh, Llanidloes, 1844-1845, relating to Mr. Meares's inability to support Mr. Marsh [in an election] owing to a prior promise to Mr. Slyman, and the canvassing of Mr. Meares's tenants on behalf of Mr. Slyman in the said contest; and a letter from Thomas Edmund Marsh to Geo[rge] Meares, 1845, and five letters exchanged between Thomas Edmund Marsh and the Rev[eren]d J. A. Herbert, Glanhafren, Newtown, 1845, concerning the attempted removal of Mr. Marsh from the office of clerk to the magistrates acting for the upper division of the hundred of Llanidloes, and differences about the calling of meetings of the said magistrates. Supplementary notes relating to the incidents referred to in the letters have been inserted. The whole transcript is possibly in the hand of D[avi]d Davies, clerk to the aforesaid Mr. Marsh.

Letters of various individuals connected to the families of Maurice, Owen, Ormsby-Gore and Godolphin through marriage, friendship or business and a small number of items where neither the author nor the recipient can be identified, 1582-1933.

An additional group of records, 1904-1939, were received per Dr David Steeds comprising extensive files of correspondence, the minutes of the Association and its various committees and sub-committees, financial material, press cuttings and printed material. There are also many files deriving from the parliamentary general elections campaigns of the period 1906-29 in Montgomeryshire. There are also papers relating to the North Wales Liberal Federation, 1940-46, and the Liberal Federation of Wales, 1943-45. The records cover the period when David Davies, Llandinam (1880-1944) was the Liberal MP for Montgomeryshire, 1906-29, and the early years of its representation by his successor E. Clement Davies (1884-1962). This group remains uncatalogued.

Miscellaneous papers, [c. 1770]-1893, relating to Montgomeryshire, including a petition, [c. 1772], to repair the market-house at Newtown (f. 2); petitions, 1772, for and against the proposed turnpike road from Oswestry, co. Salop, to Welshpool (ff. 4-7); abstract of rentals of the Powis Castle estate, [c. 1773] (ff. 8-15); printed poll book for the borough of Welshpool, 1847 (ff. 23-8); and printed election address of Frederick Hanbury Tracy in the Montgomery boroughs election of 1877 (f. 38).

Poetry and songs,

Scrap book, 1766-1799, of manuscript and printed songs, verses, press cuttings, entertainment programmes and a published speech addressed by the chairman of the Sessions of the Peace at Westminster to the Grand Jury. This speech and several of the other literary compositions are concerned with the threat posed to the British constitution by the French Revolution, 1794-1799; the latter include a song celebrating the Oswestry Rangers, commanded by Major Ormsby. Further verses include celebrations of the coming of age of Sir Watkin Williams Wynn, 1770; a copy of the School for Scandal by R. B. Sheridan and On her Brother 's Violin by Mrs Sheridan; a Parody on the Anacreontic Song about a quarrel involving the Bishop of Bangor; a poem mourning the deaths of the Edgell children of Egham [post-1787]; and voting for 'Carlo Khan' [Charles James Fox], 1784. The press cuttings concern, among other subjects, a proposed new charter for the Borough of Helston and Montgomeryshire elections.
