Biographical history
Edward Griffith (1832-1918) was born in Barmouth, Merionethshire, but grew up in Dolgellau, where he later set up business as a draper. He was also a noted local historian and wrote articles about the history of the Quakers in Merionethshire and accounts of his early life. He also collected deeds and documents, mainly relating to properties in Dolgellau and its surrounding parishes.

System of arrangement
Arranged chronologically. Following donation, the records were sorted into three boxes, numbered and catalogued on slips; but no typewritten schedule was produced. In 1958, a schedule was produced for the contents of one box. Since the original catalogue was unsatisfactory, the entire collection was re-catalogued and the 1958 schedule has now been withdrawn. The new schedule incorporates both the deeds included in the 1958 schedule and those in the remaining two boxes. To avoid confusion, the numbers on the deeds in the 1958 schedule (nos 1-97) have been retained, but the documents in the other two boxes have been re-numbered. The new schedule contains a table of concordance between the old and new numbers as well as an index of page references.
